RE: apache family campgrounds myrtle beach sc

I guess mine is the "bad."
Apache is old and run down and not a place we'd ever consider staying. Myrtle Beach Travel Park is our preferred campground in the area. It's right down the street (and beach) from Apache.
x2 we have been going to the Travel Park since 1972. Have walked around Apache and it needs a face lift. Washrooms are very outdated although we always use our own facilities.

RE: Driving around the Gaspe Peninsula

Forillon N.P. is a great place to visit but check the prices before making your decision. If you belong to Passpsort America, there is a member park not far from the National Park. We opted to stay there and only pay the daily rate to go into Forillon for a hike. Camping in N.P.'s has become very expensive in my opinion.

RE: Really Big Campsites

We were just at Fort Desoto in Florida and our site was huge + backed on to a very large grassy area behind the actual site. Loved that park.

RE: Heading south from canada

There are several open in Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. Monroe, Mich., Twin Lakes at Bluffton,Ohio, 1 maybe 2 at Wanapakota,Ohio, Oak Creek just south of Cininatti, Kentucky Horse Park at Lexington, Singing Hills at Cave City, Ky. Most open in Tennessee.
Look up various cities in Woodalls and under criteria enter open all year.

RE: travelling 401 thru Windsor

The other trick is take the ferry between Sombra ON and Marine City MI very quick and pleasant ride across the river. The ferry can accommodate transport trucks and I have crossed with my fiver with zero issues.
What is the cost for using the ferry. We have noticed the signs but never considered using it. Sounds like a possible alternative.

RE: Driving around the Gaspe Peninsula

Our experience 3 summers ago was that parking for a M.H. and towed car was often impossible. We were advised of a couple of restaurants and art galleries to visit. There was no place to park the M.H. at the gallery and we decided to find a place to turn around and take another look. Well 10 miles later we were still trying to find a place to turn around - forget parking. We never made it back to the gallery. The same thing happened at a restaurant we wanted to stop at for lunch. At times like that we really missed our Lance truck camper - could park anywhere!

RE: Problems with Good Sam ERS

Update #3
I just wanted to post that Good Sam ERS has contacted me recently and made me a happy camper. I hope I never require their services, but since my first experience with them was excellent and my second was a disaster, I am willing to give them another chance.
They are now looking into accommodating Canadians who have to give a postal code along with their credit card number. I should add that this is the first company I have ever dealt with that requested a postal code when I provided a Visa number in case of additional costs.
Anyway, all is good for now. Thank you Good Sam.

RE: Looking for a bit larger RV than my Class B Pleasureway

We are currently at the Tampa RV Show and started looking at different brands on the Sprinter Chassis. Several dealers here have told us that Mercedes purchased in US cannot be serviced in Canada. If the unit is purchased in Canada, there are fewer issues.

RE: Number of Winter Texans at Valley RV parks drops

We usually go to Texas as do many of our Ontario friends. Family commitments brought us to Florida this year and for no particular reason many of our friends have decided to check out Florida this year. There certainly are a lot of Ontario plates around here. Maybe with the price of gas, people from Ontario are coming to Florida vs. Texas
as it is closer.
Just a thought .....

Problems with Good Sam ERS

original post Dec. 21
On our way to Florida we experienced a blow out on I-65 just south of Nashville. It took Good Sam ERS 4 hours to respond to our call - we had a tire but it needed mounted on a rim. Also in case there were additional charges they required a credit card. We gave them our Visa number and then they asked for our ZIP - being Canadians we have a 6 digit postal code and they could not handle this.
Good Sam contacted us and have been investigating the complaint. I got a call from them a few days ago saying they were going to reimburse us for the service call for which we had to pay cash. I'm thinking this would be the normal thing to do - why would you pay for road assist if they aren't going to cover the call.
Also, they admitted they would have to look into the problem of not being able to handle Canadian postal codes. There was no offer of compensation for our lengthy wait basically caused by Good Sam's inability to service us as customers, in a timely fashion. We have only used their services 2x in 8 years and expect better from them.
We estimate we have used approx. 90 minutes of cell phone minutes for something that should have been a simple call for tire assistance with a response in a timely manner. I guess we were lucky we were on a major interstate and not in some isolated location in the middle of no where or we might still be there!
We will not forget this experience when it comes time to renew in August.

RE: Gulf Shores SP, Al vs Big Lagoon SP, Fl.

Interesting to read replies from my posting a year ago. We were lucky and got a great site at Gulf Shores S.P. (we did not reserve). We did a lot of cycling and geocaching in the area. There is plenty to do and I would love to go back.
We have also stayed a couple of times at Bella Terra. We don't fit in with all the million $ M.H.'s but we're not proud and their special rates are excellent and hard to turn down.

RE: Bird Watching in Rio Grande Valley

I think Santa Anna Wildlife Refuge and Bentsen Palm S.P. would fill the bill. At the S.P. there is a tram that transports you around and you can get off at various spots - lots of benches and picnic areas. No cars allowed. There is a great bird viewing area at the entrance to Santa Anna also. Lots of orioles and green jays to be seen.

RE: James Island Co. park info please

Great place. Was there last April. Most all sites are deep. Some we liked are 17,25,26,27,28,30. Miles of great paved bike paths, dog park. Free admission and parking @ Foley Beach, and Ocean fishing pier. Not a bad restaurant in Charleston.Plenty to see and do.
Agree with all of that. I don't think I saw a "bad" site. I was there in Feb so the nights were a bit chilly. That made it nice that they have propane fill in the park.
Well we found a bad one! I can't remember the number, but it might have been 99 or 100 - anyway it was a double site - common drive and 2 individual sites. We shared with a T.T. - no problem with that except the way the sites were laid out, our sewer hose connection was only 2 ft. from their door. Because of their length, they could not move and neither could we if we wanted to access the hook-ups. I felt bad for them since they were there first but I sure wouldn't like someones sewer hose at my entrance door. We left after 2 days as did they.

RE: Are there CGs in FL that are less like parking lots?

Tripalot - When you said you TOTALLY agree with the above poster, I assume you did not necessarily agree with the part about, "Florida is IMO, not a snowbird friendly state."
I was referring to the description of Rock Crusher Canyon although I do agree that prices here do seem higher. This is our first trip to Florida in 25 years and only our 2nd week here. It is too early to say how friendly etc. it is. We usually go to Texas and are used to seeing signs welcoming the Winter Texans back - haven't seen anything similar in Florida - yet.

RE: Are there CGs in FL that are less like parking lots?

How far south on the gulf coast are you thinking about? Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River is not a parking lot in any way shape or form. It is spread out among the trees and most sites are very big. There is the upper section for those that like a parking lot feel, but that is only about ΒΌ of the sites, all others are spread out over many acres.
We lived, worked and retired from Florida, then left as soon as we could after retirement. Florida is IMO, not a snowbird friendly state. Many merchants see you as their annual gold mine and prices are NOT cheap or in many cases, even reasonable. We have found Texas and Arizona both friendlier and more reasonable than Florida, especially if you are thinking of anywhere south of Tampa.
We just spent a week at Rock Crusher Canyon and I totally agree with the above poster. The sites were huge and well treed or more open sites were also available. I would not hesitate to return to this park - it was a real gem and far better than we imagined it would be.

RE: Slide Topper Replacement

if it is only the fabric, you can purchase brand-specific covers. Or find an upholstery shop and have one cut and sewn to size. I replaced both of our covers and saved a lot by having them sewn locally. Installation is a two-person / two ladder job. I found step by step with photos online, wasn't difficult. You will have to re-tension the roller, also likely will need to re-position the lock to keep the fabric from unrolling as you move down the highway.
Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestion but we aren't equipped to do the job ourselves. This slide is 20 ft. long so tricky to handle. We want to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing.

Just the fabric - it is currently rolled up and in the casing.

Slide Topper Replacement

On our way to Florida, our slide topper decided to detach and self destruct. We will be in Central Florida and are looking for recommendations on where to have this replaced. We checked with one local rv repair company, and they could not handle it - said slide was too big for them. Our slide is 20 ft.
Any recommendations? Any guess as to cost?
