Wrecked my 96 Dynasty, need advice!

Hello All, Well I wrecked my 1996 Monaco and I need some advice! Here’s what happened; I was driving to Gunter AFB Alabama from Omaha and only 6 miles from my destination when a car that was merging with traffic lost control and slide right into the path of my Dynasty. She hit the concrete barrier wall and I hit her. The police officer said in his report that her speed was unsafe for conditions, (it was raining very lightly). So, the girl had Allstate insurance and her parents already started the claims process, the adjuster is supposed to be out this week sometime to look at my RV. Most of my damage is on the right front and the generator door. Now, what should I be on guard for? I haven’t had a wreck in 20 years so I really don’t remember all the details. Will the adjuster try to cheat me? Do they really know what they’re talking about? Is he the enemy because he works for Allstate, and I use State Farm? Any advice is much appreciated! - Tom

Monaco Dynasty Orifice Tube?

Hello all, Can anyone tell me where in the dash A/C system Monaco might have hid the orifice tube? I've removed the compressor, the dryer, and the expansion valve all in preparation of a dash A/C overhaul, but I can't find the orifice tube in any of the usual locations. I'm starting to wonder if this coach even came with one? Any help is much appreciated. - Tom

Cummins C8.3 Injection Timing

Hello All, Here's the learner (Rookie) back with another silly question. I'm going to take the Monaco into the Cummins shop in the spring for a valve lash adjustment. While I'm there I thought about asking the mechanic about advancing the injection timing maybe by 2 or 3 degrees, for improved performance/mileage. Can anyone offer any advice on that? Good, bad or ugly I'll take it all. Thanks. - Tom

Thanks - Sounds like more research is in order before diving into that modification. I'll just hold for a while. Thanks for the info. - Tom

Cummins C8.3 Performance Exhaust?

Hello All, I'm seriously considering putting a new performance muffler on our 1996 Monaco Dynasty. It has the Cummins mechanical C8.3, and I'm trying to get to that magical 10 MPG mark. Does anyone have any experience with the Aero Muffler? Here's the link: http://www.parleysdieselperformance.com/products/aero-exhaust-turbine_performance-muffler-AT4040XL Thanks for taking a look and any advice. - Tom

ALT/Charge light flickering while generator running?

Hello All, I had an interesting situation come up yesterday when I went to run/drive our 1996 Monaco Dynasty. My standard MO is to go and start our coach every weekend, and then drive it every 2 weeks. This was a “drive around” week, so I went and started both the big Cummins 8.3 and the generator, let them warm up and got on the road. The generator was powering a 1500 watt portable heater (for a load). As I began to drive I noticed the ALT/CHARGE light flickering on and off on the dash, and the tachometer dropping to zero then jumping back up to normal RPMs. This sporadic show lasted for 5 minutes, (about 1/2 way through the drive). I then shut down the generator and the problem stopped. Now, I know the tachometer gets its feed off the engine alternator, and I strongly suspect that shutting down the generator “fixed” the problem. But I’d like to know for sure, can anyone offer any information/advice on this issue. Thanks in advance. - Tom

RE: Can we talk Anti-Freeze for Cummins C8.3?

Well, that actually brings up a good point. I know I have to add SCA either in liquid form, or with a proper coolant filter that releases the SCA. So, with that in mind it seems that any EG based AF that meets the standards is O.K. I'm not saying I want to live dangerously of course, but anymore you really have to do your homework. If you would have asked me 5 years ago if my authentic genuine Cummins replacement lift pump was going to be made in China I would have thought you were crazy, but guess what? It is! I even asked the guy at the Cummins shop about it before I left the parts counter, he just shock his head and said, "There's nothin I can do about it". - Tom

Can we talk Anti-Freeze for Cummins C8.3?

Hello all, I’d like to table a topic for conversation if I may, concerning anti-freeze for the Cummins C8.3 diesel. Ours in particular is a 1996 model. Our manual states that the AF needs to be ethylene glycol, low silicate, and must meet ATSM 4985 standards. Now, I’ve been using Wal-Mart Super Tech Anti-freeze in my vehicles (My non-Dex Cool vehicles that is) for about 5 years now and haven’t had any trouble. Here’s a link for anyone who would like to take a look at the stuff: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=16645420&adid=bzv_fb_revshr_001 . Anyway, would there be any reason not to use it in the big Cummins? It does meet all standards set forth in the manual; I suppose I’m just curious what others think about it. The guy at the Cummins shop looked at the empty bottle of Super Tech AF I carried in with me for about 5 minutes. It was almost like he was doing his best to find some reason to not recommend this product. Finally he said “it says here car or light duty truck, that Cummins is medium duty” and so of course he recommended the FleetGuard formula which costs roughly 150% more than the Super Tech. Any thoughts? - Tom P.S. If the link dosen't work you may have to copy and paste it.

Monaco Radiator Hose numbers please?

Hello all, I’m looking to buy a new upper and lower radiator hose for our 1996 Dynasty, but I don’t have any part numbers to reference. I called Monaco but unfortunaltely they told me they couldn’t provide any part numbers either. Oh well! Anyway, has anyone done that replacement recently and can you offer any part numbers. We have the Cummins mechanical C8.3 engine. Thanks. - Tom

RE: Replacing my Monaco air dryer system - advice?

For those who are interested, what a headache this job turned out to be! O.K. first off you can’t find “old” filter cartridges for the original Pureair air dryer unit, but there is a new replacement unit that’s supposed to be “plug and play”. So I bought the new unit for $290 and got under our 96 Dynasty to remove the old one. The old unit came out fairly easily, I would say roughly about an hour to remove it. I compared it to the new unit and it looked very similar, not identical but very similar. I could see that the 3 out of the 4 fittings were in different positions, but I thought it looks workable. Next step, remove the old bracket and just bolt the new bracket on, not so fast. Some bright apple at either Monaco, or RoadMaster bolted half the bracket on, and welded the other half. Roughly 3 hours was spent on my back with a cut off wheel trying to cut the welded side of the bracket off. What a pain in the neck, literally. But it had to be done; the new bracket could not be bolted on without removing the old one. Finally the old bracket was removed and I was able to contort myself into a pretzel to bolt the new bracket on, I mounted the new unit on its bracket to test fit the lines and 3 out of the 4 lines could be moved around to fit the new Dryer unit, but guess which one would not? Yep, the main air pressure braided steel hose running from the compressor to the dryer. Off to the local hose shop for a 12” longer braided steel hose, about $100 for that little baby! On my back again and the new hose fit very nicely. A few new runs of looming, and some new cable ties and I was done with the task. What a pain this job was! But at least I know it’s done.

RE: Replacing my Monaco air dryer system - advice?

You're so right Wolfe10! I replaced the lift pump on our Cummins 8.3 about 5 months ago and guess where the pump was made? Yep! China. I thought surely buying genuine Cummins parts from the dealer was a sure way to get a U.S. made product, not so. I guess it's a sign of the times. - Tom
