RE: "Just Me and My RV" - NY Times article (link below)

The article mentions HarvestHost.com which seems like a great idea. Has anyone has signed up and used the camping services?
Tried a search but only had one hit and that was just a reference to the website.
Thanks,
Tom

RE: Anyone ever use the oven?

I wonder why manufacturers of RV ovens don't ship them with this type pilot lighter? Do they know something we don't ... I can't intuitively think of any safety issue with this mod.
Having it installed and using it for quite a while I can't see how this would be unsafe.
Also on my install I used a different location for the ignition button since I wanted to keep the standard stove ignitor intact as a backup. It's so nice not to hear that clanging anymore although I must admit to turning it once in a while just to remember how annoying it was.
Good luck,
Tom

RE: ladder recomendation

Went with the 300lb version of this. Just keep the tubes clean and it works great. The 250lb rating one would probably been fine but I've been very happy with the stability on mine.

RE: Anyone ever use the oven?

We use our oven so much, I just added an electronic igniter to it.
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!
We love the RV oven ... but HATE the lighting procedure. Please explain (w/pictures if possible) where you got the parts, what you installed, and how you installed the parts.
Phil,
This thread provides the information. Great and inexpensive mod if you use the oven.

RE: Hard wired Surge protector location?

I installed mine right next to the Circuit Breaker Box.
Same with me but I like what Red Neck Camper did. Not sure if mine would fit behind the fuse panel though.

RE: King Size Bed

We have a 30/31 with a king size bed. Don't have the exact bed dimensions now but will update the post in the next few days. The 5th wheel we have is no longer available but I have to believe that some manufacturers still have them as an option.
Just checked Forest Rivers Cedar Creek Model 29RE and they have the option however the model is not 29' but actually 34' 7". So much for the name reflecting overall length.
Good luck,
Tom

RE: Generator

I plan on keeping the gen in the truck bed to avoid any fumes getting into the camper. The camper power cord is long enough to reach the gen in the truck bed so the plan is plugging the camper cord into the gen the same way I would plug in the camper into shore power if I were at a camp site with hook ups.
I did the same but later on added a second 50 amp connection at the front of our 5th wheel. This allows me to use a short power cord and hookup is just a few seconds. If needed I could have it connected while on the road. I can still use the connection at the rear if we stop at a site with power.

RE: Led Lights

The LEDs are .02amps each
The current I see for my 6x6 panel, 36 LEDs, is .25 amps. Do those 12 LED ones really only take .02 amps?
Thanks,
Tom
By the way anyone interested in 27 incandescent 1141 base bulbs :B

TenBear beat me to it. It's a bit tricky for the oven but once setup correctly works great.

RE: Any other mpg geeks out there?

I use an app called "roadtrip" on my iPhone and it works great for my needs. Doesn't give comparisons but keeps track of all my expenses, which is what I am interested in for my vehicles.
I use Road Trip as well. Good application to keep tabs on services/maintenance as well as mileage. Now driving at 55 versus 65 when towing and enjoying 13.1 miles per gallon. :)

RE: iPad for use as a GPS

Best luck with your mount Jerry. By the way how is your new iPad? We have the first gen and haven't made a trip to see the new one yet. I'll bet that retina display is really nice in a larger format than the iPhone.

RE: iPad for use as a GPS

You might want to check out ProClip
They use 2 parts. One mounts to the dash or other area and the second would be the device holder. I have one in my pickup and another in the car so we can move the GPS to either. Well made but you pay for it. Photo in my profile web site under pickup.

RE: How to convert to LED lighting

I'm so pleased with them that I just ordered another 10 to finish the trailer.
Same with me but my total LED (36 panel as well) count is now 27 including outdoor and storage lights. This upgrade, along with the electronic ignition for the stove / oven, are my top two from this forum.
Great topic!

RE: An Old(er) Newbie

I guess I should mention right off the bat, that our vision of how we'll do this is that we'll be staying at places like SP's, NP's and all those little unknown campground areas that we run across, hanging out there for a couple of weeks at a time, hiking the trails, doing a little fishing, just kicking back in the camp chairs, etc and doing no more than a couple hundred miles, more or less, depending on what the map shows us, to where we'll set up and do it all again.
That sounds like what we do including County Parks and BLM areas. While you mention traveling light I like to have the options of home available.
Enjoy working on our 5th wheel, as well as being able to repair if needed, so I take tools and more than most I'll bet.
Like to fish and explore lakes so we carry a 12' Porta-Bote with a 6hp outboard.
Always look forward to being in a sparsely populated area but have equipment that allows us to stay connected to the internet. I consider that a safety concern as well.
Don't like hearing generators but have one of the quiet ones if needed.
We know full timing is not for us but have spent over a month in ours comfortably. No doubt in my mind we could live in it as set up, in part, because of the space and storage a 5th wheel provides. Best of luck and I'd try to keep that 160 acres if possible, at least until you are both sure of your new mobile life.

RE: Stolen iPhone.........

I am curious if the parents took any action on their stepson? Did the kid even apologize to your wife?
Glad she at least got it back but the kid needs to pay some price for theft.

RE: tank sensors as in black tank

Two posts have mentioned the Horst Miracle Probes. While they may have worked for some my experience has not been positive. Will most likely end up installing the SeaLevel system. Wish I went with that solution from the beginning.

RE: Copying Program files to new computer?

After a drive failure on a MacBook Pro I used Time Machine to restore my data/applications following the OS X install. All applications were fine except for Adobe CS4 which required a re-install. Even though all CS4 files/directories/icons came over from my backup there is something in place that requires the install to, I assume, verify you are the software owner. So as was mentioned earlier you will need the s/n as well as install media, unless CS2 will allow a full copy.

RE: BD Brake

Purchased mine in 2009 and install took about 5 hours. Great addition and no problems so far. Keep in mind I have upgraded the transmission including a switch to lock the torque converter next to the exhaust brake toggle switch.
Well worth the cost, especially in a mountainous area.
Good luck,
Tom
