RE: ros and cons of Tow Doly

I've owned both.....can 't say I was a big fan of the tow dolly. 1. Straps came loose and had to be checked at every stop. 2. Once in a campground you have to put it "somewhere" and many sites just aren't that big. 3. Hooking up takes about 5+ minutes and in the rain it was a pain. 4. Another set of tires to replace and check pressure. 5. Purchase another license plate for it. 4 Down.....hooked up in 3 minutes, low to no maintenance. Like someone said, it just depends on IF your car can be towed 4 down. Exactly! X2

RE: Georgia State Parks / No Site Specific Reservations

We get there early and take our time searching for site. For us that still have to work, getting there early is not an option. And 'take our time looking for a site' is even less an option. You have been real lucky getting what you reserved. Twice we where not able to get the site we reserved. When I talked to the Ranger at the office his response was 'Sorry nothing I can do. We had to leave and no offer to find us something else. We no longer use any of the Ga parks because of that. Should make you feel better, one less RV to use the system. I don't know what other complain about with good sites gone when they become available. You just need to plan and make your reservations online. I did that two years in a row for Bahia Honda Fl State Park. It was a site overlooking the water too.

RE: ros and cons of Tow Doly

Ah the old Dolly vs four down argument. Just like Ford vs Chevy. There are pros and cons to each. Lots of personal reasons for each. But... Next time you are driving around, look to see how many tow four down and how many tow with a dolly. Typically at least 80% of folks tow four down. Hum, there must be something good about towing four down - ya think? Nobody here is going to change anyone's mind on how they prefer to tow. I've tried both and I'll stick with four down. My choice, not yours. Your opinions will vary. Maybe it's geography. When I take notice it's usually more like 80% dolly. Hmm. Like I said 'Opinions will vary...'

RE: ros and cons of Tow Doly

i am not sure on this but i was told that with 4 wheels down the odometer continues to run therefore the miles rack up even tho it isnt being driven so a dolly would prevent that. No not normally. Sometimes you might need to pull a fuse...

RE: Dash Cover recommendations please

Don't know were you live in Florida, but you might want to try Wade RV. They made dash covers. The are located at Lazysdays.

RE: Motorhome mask

Talk to Wade RV. They can custom make a bra for any RV and they FIT correctly. We had one made for motor home in 2003 and the bra is still in great condition. They are located at Lazydays in Florida..

RE: GPS that allows you to pick EXACTLY what roads you want

Either Street & Trips or Delorme Street Atlas will do exactly what you want it to do. I'm using a micro AT that sits on the floor under the left side on the dash in our motor home, with a hard drive. It uses a wireless keyboard with mouse pad. It is also connected via HDMI cable to the front overhead 32 inch HDTV. I've been using this setup for for around 4 years without any computer failure. It works great. http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/49630/2929822870083169129S600x600Q85.jpg

RE: What was your Occupation??????

That being said I am curious what you all did (or may still be doing) that has afforded you the opportunity to enjoy a Class A motorhome. I don't believe that what someone did for a living has anything to do with ones ability to own and enjoy any type/cost of an RV......how good you were with your financial planning IMHO is the key factor to RV'ing 'comfortably'. Nothing says it better of bad financial planning, is reading posts of big rig owners planning their trips around walmart parking lots. :B X2 right on.......Never stayed at a Wal Mart parking lot and never will.. I'd call overnighting at Wally not wasting money on an outrageously priced campground for just a few hours rest GOOD financial planning!

RE: Tampa RV Show

Re: discount to the Tampa Show: It's a dollar off on opening day for seniors. There's usually a coupon on the website for other days. In past years, one day admission gets you two days. I don't see that advertised this year. We typically dry camp with friends in the parking lot. (Attendans come around after the crowds leave and collect the five or six dollars for the night,) I called about their dry camping a few days ago. This year it's $20 a night to dry camp at the show.

RE: Cat Mechanic says to buy Cummins (!)

IMHO Coachmen does not manufacture the highest quality Rig and Yes we owned one that they took back to the factory to repair at their expense. We had a totally different experience with our 03 Cross Country with the Cummins ISB 300hp/600tq. We've had it over 8 years and driven it over 63,000 miles. Never any major problems with the coach, engine, transmission or chassis. Other then routine maintenance, tires and batteries etc., the only thing replaced on the engine was the fan belt idler pulley for about $200 at a Cummins shop in Atlanta.

RE: Newmar of Fleetwood

The other problem is I have always been less than impressed with the quality of the fit & finish than impressed. The other problem is I have always been less than impressed with the quality of the fit & finish of Fleetwood products. I had a Fleetwood some years ago that I found to be quite shoddy. Sounds like you have already decided.

RE: Providing Security for Stored Motor Home.

Cheap storage is not necessarily all that cheap. Consider indoor storage. I do have secure covered storage that cost about $175 a month. Yes there is cheaper storage, but this was the ONLY covered storage in the Atlanta area. Sometimes indoor storage is not available. I have searched years to find indoor storage for our motor home. There just isn't any to be found.

RE: Co-Pilot Live 8

Good luck with Co-Pilot. Mine was so bad they refunded my money. I now use Delorme Street Atlas and a Garmin 265T. I like the 265T best for directions and Street Atlas for the laptop size screen. Jim X2 Co-Pilot is a horrible product! I sent my back for a refund to. I'm using Delorme Street Atlas running on a micro AT hooked via an HDMI cable to my front overhead 32 inch HDTV. All controlled with a wireless keyboard with mouse pad by my wife the navigator. No eye straining with this setup. http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/7230/2553190320083169129S600x600Q85.jpg

RE: Supplemental braking systems comparison

I have an SMI in my 2000 Nissan XTerra, have towed it for 40,000 miles never a problem. Very responsive company to deal with. I did not want a box on the floor. Would buy another SMI product in a heartbeat!! We've had our SMI Air Force One for about 2 years. The system works great, absolutely nothing gets in the way of my feet when drive the car. I CAN feel a difference in stopping when driving our motor home with the SMI unit. Someone made the comment about 'no invasion of the MH to install'. SMI has considered that... Total Coach Protection Total Coach Protection exclusively with Air Force One is a process that protects the air supply on the coach. To meet federal regulations (FMVSS 121) when using air brakes, the supplemental brake system must protect the towing vehicle air supply. SMI includes the components necessary to meet these important safety regulations. If the towed vehicle separates or the towing system fails, the coach air is protected. Air Force One is the safest air brake system available. No other air-operated system offers this level of safety and control. My concern with the AF One is the vacuum line while the RoadMaster has it's own pump system. Will the AF One system still work effectively if vacuum is lost? To answer your question - Yes it will, because SMI has it own vacumm pump (mounted under the hood on the toad) for the toad brakes that is run from the air brakes of the motor home. As for proportional braking... Air Force One uses a small amount of air from the coach's air brake system to create the vacuum necessary to activate the power brakes of the towed and then applies the towed vehicle's brakes in a truly proportionate manner. As you apply the brakes in the coach, a proportionate amount of air is supplied to the Air Force One system to activate the towed vehicle's brakes. Because Air Force One uses the same air that brakes the coach, truly mirrored and proportionate braking is achieved in the towed vehicle. I did not want to deal with any 'box on the floor' to be my supplemental breaking system. I too "Would buy another SMI product in a heartbeat!!"

Motor Home Specialists Texas

I did a search on an RV dealership in Alvarado Texas - Motor Home Specialist - but didn't find a lot of info here. We're starting to search for another motor home to purchase before we retire. We found the website for Motor Home Specialist and their prices seem to be better than other dealers we've looked at. They also show MSRP price with discounts upfront, unlike LazyDays. Just wondering if anyone has purchased from them or had an experience with sales or service dept. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Is there anyway around Reserve America?

I've been using Reserve America since about 2003. Never had a problem. Customer service is great. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. There is a $10 cancellation fee, but what's wrong with that? They're a business and it's just part of working with them. Don't be afraid to use Reserve America just because you've 'heard' bad things. There is nothing wrong with using Reserve America to make reservations. Use them and then form you opinion...

RE: Gave up on Flying J ...

I must be living right. We just completed a trip to Alaska; ~11,000 miles. I filled up at Flying J 8-10 times without a problem. I used the dedicated RV lanes, scanned my loyalty card, scanned my credit card and pumped up to $450 of diesel in a single swipe. No problems; didn't have to go inside. When I filled up last weekend using the RV lanes at the FlyingJ in Dothan Al. I noticed a small sign that stated there is a $495 limit using Visa and $100 limit using MC when you use the FrequentFueler of RV Loyalty Card. You will not find an RV friendlier national truck stop than FlyingJ. I just don't understand the animosity against FlyingJ when others here have stated other truck stops actually tell you not to use there truck lanes. FlyingJ welcomes your business. So what's so hard about using their discount card anyway? At least your not being turned away. BTW - Card swiping rules: At the auto/RV lanes Swipe your credit card then you be ask to swipe your loyalty card. If swipe your loyalty card first, you'll be told to 'see cashier' At truck lanes Swipe your Loyalty Card first. Your pump will be authorized and you can fill. After filling go inside to pay. When using the truck lanes you have always needed to go inside to get your receipt. Receipts have never be issued at the pump in the truck lanes. Or at least in the last nine years I've be filling up at FlyingJ.
