RE: Hypertech Max Energy Programmer

I bought a Hypertech for my Chevy 6.0 gasser and couldn't tell any difference from stock. I sold it on Ebay for a loss and bought a tuned PCM from Nelson Performance. That was a huge improvement until I put 2 1/2" dual exhaust on the truck. I lost some low end torque vs the stock exhaust. Still love the tune although I didn't really see any gain in MPG. The tune I have is for 89-92 octane.

RE: Chevy vs. Dodge

Weak front drive train ? I haven't heard of any problems with the front drive train other than a c/v joint breaking from ABUSE.Where did you get your info from about this because I would like to read it. as a technician i say drive them both and buy the one that you like better. my buddy just bought a megacab cummins truck, we have several fords and chevys in the fleets i service. any one will work. i think the chevy steers better but man that mega cab has some rear seat space. and if you are going off road at all the dodge is very heavy in the front compared to all else. But the Chevy has really bad ground clearance and that weak front drive train - if you are talking real off roading that is.

RE: What was your first car?

Did your '72 C10 have coil springs in the rear? I had one (my 2nd truck) with a 350 as well. I think it's still on the road, too. Yes it had the coil springs. I wish I still had my old truck.

RE: What was your first car?

Mine was a 1972 C-10 Chevy pickup. It had a 1970 300 h.p. 350 in it when I got it and when I sold it it was built a little. I miss that truck.

RE: LMM that wouldnt start!

With an attitude like that people on here will not even want to help you again. It was all in good fun for cripes sake ! People on here are basically friends with each other and like to joke around. That is what makes things fun and makes this forum a place a what it is. If you are that serious and can't joke little maybe the dealer is a better choice. They have no sense of humor either and they aren't free.

RE: WHAT TIRES FOR MY TRUCK

Agree with Marty. There is no best tire but only what works best at a particular time for your particular truck and needs. My current 2500 Dodge/Cummins came with Michelin LTX LT265/70-17 E all seasons. They lasted 115k miles however the LTX AS would get stuck on green grass and were helpless on icy snow pack roads even with 1200 lbs sitting over the rear axles. Very hard rubber tire. I went with the Bridgestone Revo LT E with the AT tread. I've been pleased with their green grass/icy snow pack road performance even without 1200 lbs in the bed. Ran them for 75k miles which can be typical of the rougher treaded AT tire. I just replaced the Revo with the Revo 2's. I think it was the LTX AS that I had and didn't like. Not the MS. Either way they were worthless in the snow.

RE: WHAT TIRES FOR MY TRUCK

I have had several sets of Michelin LTX MS through the years and got 100,000 miles or slightly more on each set. This was in a Suburban with no towing, but I did tow a 4,200 pound boat/trailer frequently. This is the same tire I have on my 2500HD now and it looks like I will get very close to 100,000 miles on this set. I tow heavy now, but only 2-3 times a year. I too use the Michelin LTX MS, while I did not get 100K on the last set, I did get 75K and changed them out before they were completely worn out, sold the old set for 100 bucks. Now that I do not drive my truck daily anymore, the current set will probably be replaced due to dry rot rather than tread wearout. Very quiet, good ride, will purchase again, currently on my 6th set between two trucks and two Suburbans since 1997. I had the Michelins once and although they wore well they were worthless in the snow compared to other tires. I have Had Bridgestone AT Revos and they were ok, but were not great in the snow after about 20K miles. I swore of Coopers do to bad luck however I decided to try them again and purchased some Discoverer AT3's and so far they are better in the snow than the Bridgestone's, but we will have to see how they wear.

RE: Explain limited slip differential

From my understanding a limited slip applies power to both wheels under most normal conditions. Most commonly a muscle car on dry pavement. The trouble with a limited slip is that both wheels have to have equal traction. If they don't the power will be distributed to the wheel with the least traction. A limited slip will tend to perform like an open differential in off road situations and that is why they use lockers. There are basically 3 style lockers. One style is always locked and will unlock when turning. These types are the Loc-Rite and True-Trac. Another is one such as GM's G80 which acts like an open differential until there is a difference in wheel speed of around 200 RPM's and then it will lock up until approx. 20 MPH and then it unlocks. GM uses the G80 designation for both it's limited slip (used in muscle cars) and the locker (used in the trucks). The third type would be a mechanical locker such as an ARB air locker. These require the driver to engage and disengage them.

RE: RUST ! Which new trucks do you think are best and worst?

I haven't seen a GMT400 with intact rockers & cab corners in years. Rockers are still a problem for GM trucks, and to a lesser extent for Dodges. Fords still have rear wheelhouse rot. Dodges tend to have the rear bumpers rot from inside. I have a 1998 that has over 300k and 14 Minnesota winters and the rockers are just starting to rust. The bottoms of the doors are starting too. I take good care of the truck and washhed inside the rockers by spraying water in the drain holes. I am very impressed with this truck. Much better than any Ford or Dodge I have seen from that year with 14 salty winters. The key to Any is keeping them clean. I have seen a few 99-03 GM's with rusty rockers, but they were beat up trucks that probably weren't well cared for. On another note. My neighbor has an 05 Ford F-350 with only 50k on it and hardly seen the salt. The bottoms of his doors are rotting and above both rear wheel wells is bubbling rust. A body shop said in order to fix the doors they would have to replace the whole skin. Chevy had a bad rap in the 70's and early 80's for rusting, but from my experience that has changed. I would say IMHO that the Chevy is right at the top when it comes to being rust free if they are maintained.

RE: Cleaning Your Motor

we use dow scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner not toilet cleaner but bathroom cleaner. it works cold. it is the only thing that would get the engine oil off the white rims on one of our motorcycles. just for the record those with ford coil on plug should NEVER preasure wash their engine. i used to replace a lot of coils when the detail department would try. the harnesses under the hood are meant to be able to get wet (weatherpack connectors). i would probably stay away from the real high powered preasure washers but have used hotsy on a bunch of them without trouble. Dow Scrubbing Bubbles here as well. I use it on my trucks and lawn equipment. Keeps the engine compartment looking new as long as there are no leaks. Even the plastic air boxes and such look new. I have been using in for over 20 years and hose it off with a garden hose. Never had a single issue with any electronics or anything.

RE: GM 8.1l/Allison - how many miles is too many?

My 98 Chevy 1500 with a 5.7 is about to turn 317,000 miles. A truck with 180,000 would be low miles for me. :)

RE: What would you do? (auto tranny question)

I am in the If it ain't broke don't fix it clan. If it is working don't touch it. I have seen to many rebuilt transmissions have problems from the start to even think about replacing a perfectly good transmission with a rebuilt one. It may go another 200k before it gives you any trouble.

RE: This happened today

congrats- you own one of very few chevys to make it to 100K:) Now all you need is one of those cardboard windshield shades that says "call for help" on one side Don't tell my 98 Chevy K1500 That. It is at 310,000 and still going. Good old 350. My 97 Cavalier is at 240,000 and still going too. I must have 2 lemons.

RE: Help diagnose my problem

I would first check the master and slave, but since you say it started vibrating you may have an issue with the pressure plate itself.
