RE: Update: Cooltech won't work with dealer towing package

Well, here is an update. I spent Sunday afternoon checking out the Cooltech and trailer towing harness installed by the Jeep dealer. After trouble shooting it. I told the wife that it looked like the dealer had reversed some plugs.
When I took the Jeep in Monday, I told the Service Manager that it appeared they had reversed the cables. They asked me to bring in my flat four cable so they could simulate towing the Jeep. It seems that they hadn't field tested the setup.
It took them less than an hour to make everything work after they hooked it up to another vehicle. That would seem that was the logical thing to do two weeks ago. Not only had they reversed two plugs they had not connected the yellow wire in the Cooltech harness properly.
FYI for anyone running across this thread in the future... There are three yellow wires in the dealer installed towing harness. You have to use a ohm meter to trace which one goes to the right tail light assembly. Connect the yellow wire in the Cooltech harness to that wire. Connecting it to one of the other two yellow wires will not work. This was the root of the problem that require three visits to the dealer for them to figure out the issue.

cooltechllc.com Just don't expect any help from them if you have an issue. They have no customer service except to take your money and not respond.

RE: Update: Cooltech won't work with dealer towing package

Sounds to me like there is a ground issue? The cooltech wiring harness might've been damaged when the 'dealer' was in the process of transfering the cooltech harness from your 2011 to your 2012.
The cooltech system is plug 'n' play and uses the existing factory wiring\fittings, but there is a ground wire (cooltech harness) that needs to be spliced into the factory ground wire... :W
You might try going to a local business that does rv\auto wiring. Most likely, they'll use an old fashion test light to troubleshoot your issue.
I'll grab the ohm meter and check for an open ground.
I checked. Open ground is not the problem. I'm going to insist that dealer take it to an outside shop if they can't fix it.

RE: Update: Cooltech won't work with dealer towing package

There is some sort of an electrical adapter you have to use I'd imagine in order fror the lights to work. I had the same problem hooing up the camper lights I pulled with my GL1500 Goldwing. Seems the circuits are Asian and different from USA types. Parts house should have the adapter needed. JMHO
This is not the problem. Thanks for replying.

Update: Cooltech won't work with dealer towing package

Ok folks you seem to be my last resort in resolving this issue. Traded my underpowered 2011 Jeep for new 2012 Rubicon. Part of the deal was that dealer would remove Cooltech and base plates from 2011 and install on the 2012. They also installed a Chrysler hitch and towing harness for our ATV trailer. This is a round seven pin connection.
Our 2011 Wrangler had the factory hitch and wiring. This was a flat four connection. The Cooltech work flawlessly with the Jeep as a tow behind MH and as a tow vehicle. Since it had the factory harness we followed the Cooltech instructions and spliced the yellow wire into the 2011 as instructed.
On the new 2012, the Jeep dealer has been unable to make the Cooltech and the hitch/towing harness to work together. When first installed the Cooltech would work correctly with the MH. But the towing harness had no turn, running or brake lights on the right side of the ATV trailer.
I removed the left taillight on the 2012 and see that there is a small black module included in the dealer installed towing harness. I assume this is a diode pack. There was no such module on the factory towing harness in that location on the 2011. They've tried it with and without the yellow wire splice.
Took it back to dealer for two days. They have the trailer lights working but the Cooltech is not. I have verified that I have power at the back of the MH and continuity in the flat four harness between MH and Jeep.
Cooltech will not return emails or telephone calls from me or the Service Manager. Never seen such poor customer service. Their answering machine says they check their machine and return calls. NOT!
Help! Taking the Jeep back to the dealer tomorrow. Since I have in writing they would install hitch, base plate and wiring, I can play hardball if needed. I'm going to give them two days more to play with it and then ask that they take it to a specialty shop that does wiring for motorhomes.

RE: Banking while on the road

Haven't used a Bank in twenty years. Credit Unions are the only way to go. We use Boulder Valley Credit Union. Full service no/low fees, everything on line, car loans, oveedraft, home equity, first/second home loans, etc. Last bank we used was Fee (Key) Bank.
When we are on the road, DW goes online and pays bills, moves money and balances the checkbook. All I have to do is drive.
Be sure that the credit union you join is a member of the nationwide cooperative where you can get full walkin service at any member credit union.

RE: Colorado Springs to Blanding UT

Off topic re route but...you may already know this--Blanding has a wonderful museum at the Edge of the Cedars State Park. If you have any Interest in Ancestral Puebloan artifacts (Anasazi) don't miss it. Their collection is mind boggling and there are pueblo ruins right outside behind the museum.
We stayed at the same RV park and it was fine for an overnight. Right on the main highway. No privacy between sites but plenty of space. They have a nice laundry room as well as a trading post store with a lot of merchandise.
Another off topic post... We've stayed at Blue Mountain for a week once or twice a year for the last ten years. Huge spaces. The owners Duke and Rose are very interesting people.
If you are in a big rig (fiver or bus) ask for a spot down low to the west. Has amazing views and sunsets. On a clear day you can see Monument Valley.
Their nephew, Gary, does the day to day work around the campground. He knows the area like the back of his hand. Can give you hiking instructions to some amazing Anasazi ruins in remote canyons. Can also give you good driving routes in the area. Last time we were there he sent us to a place on BLM land where we gathered some nice pieces of petrified wood. You need a Jeep or other such vehicle to get in there. He also does lapidary. Bought a very nice set of bookends and a beautiful piece of polished dinosaur poop!
Dito on the Edge of Cedars Museum...
Duke and Rose's sons own Twin Rock Trading Post and cafe in Bluff. Trading post has the real stuff including the most beautiful Navajo baskets, etc. Cafe has the best fry bread in the Four Corners. We always get a bowl of chicken dumpling soup and fry bread. Navajo taco is a real treat as well.
FYI about Blanding. Make sure you have everything you need before going there. Grocery prices are over the top. Selection sucks. There is a Family Dollar as well. No resturants worth going to. Make sure to stock up on your favorite libation. Blanding is a very "dry" conservative Morman town.

Issues with Cooltech harness on 2012 Jeep

I recently purchased a 2012 Wrangler. As a part of the deal they pulled the Cooltech from the 2011 Wrangler and put it on the 2012. They also installed a hitch and wiring harness for my ATV trailer.
Long story short... They can't make both of them work. With the Cooltech connected and working the right side trailer lights won't. With the Cooltech disconnected, the trailer lights work fine. They've dinking with it for a day an a half.
Jeep dealer has called Cooltech twice today and emailed them as well. They don't seem to return calls or emails. I've heard about their lack of customer service before.
Got any words of wisdom or a backdoor number for Cooltech?

RE: Best Option for satellite dish

Ditto on the Winegard Travler. Had a KVH dome. I swear that bird poop would block the signal. Heavy rain always killed the signal. Had a portable dish on previous fiver. What a total pain to set up.
Travler has 3 LNBs for HD. Use it with 311 receiver. Works perfect. Everybody is happy. Had instal done at CW in Colorado Springs.
Note that we exculsively camp in the Southwest where trees are not an issue. If you camp in forested areas I would suggest the Winegard portable version of the roof mounted Travler. Same one button operation.

Replacing blade seal on Thetford Aqua Magic-IV

Bragged last week that I had fixed the blade seal on the Thetford. NOT! I searched this forum and tried all your "fixes" to make the Thetford hold its water.
Guess I'm down now to replacing the seal. Looked up instructions and it doesn't seem too hard. How many of you have replaced your own? Any tips or tricks to relate?

RE: Green River, UT to Capital Reef Nat. Park

Roads are a snoozer in regard to difficulty but real eye candy. Have spent weeks and weeks in the area over the last ten years. Campground at Capitol Reef is beautiful, but if you want full hookups go to Thousand Lakes. Have spent several weeks at TL.

RE: Best route from Colorado Springs to Durango area

Wolf Creek Pass is not for the faint of heart. Avoid it if you can. What are you driving? "Pretty steep" is an understatement. It goes up, it goes down. Check you brakes and your heart.
I just don't agree with this overstatement. I've driven two different fivers and the bus plus toad over this pass numerous times. Just take it easy and enjoy the beautiful views. About average for Colorado mountain passes.

Found a fix for Thetford not holding water

The Thetford was not holding water. Searched this forum for solutions short of replacing the seal. Tried all your suggestions. None worked. Decided to give it one last try befor ordering seal. I got 0000 steel wool and worked the seal really well. Then got out my pure silicon and worked it into the seal. Now holding water!

RE: Utah in September

Thank you, T M, am filing this away for future use. We have spent a LOT of time in the UT parks and really love them. Out on the far horizon we are thinking of southern CO (B V of course) and UT parks for 2013. Maybe in the spring for a change.
Lauren - Remember we are a bit younger than you guys! A rest day for us is short hike of 4 miles. Follow in our footsteps at your own risk.

RE: Utah in September

I'll try to directly reply to your OP. In about 2002 we started spening two weeks a year playing in UT. Now that we are retired we've upped that to at least 4 weeks a year.
Personally I would try to delay my trip to at least mid October. The average high in Moab is September is 87. Noticed that the record for September in Moab was 108. It is still just too hot for us.
In Moab, you can hike Corona Arch, Jeep Arch, Morning Glory Canyon and Fisher Towers with the dog on BLM land. Lots of other places outside the NP. Those are just our favorites. There is a doggie daycare place in Moab. Haven't used them but they came highly reccommended by one of the rafting companies. Also check out Dead Horse Point State Park.
The last few years we have been exploring the San Rafael Swell. All BLM land. There are some amazing slot canyons. We see lots of dogs having fun. You can stay at Goblin Valley State Park or the Green River KOA.
We second checking out Escalante NM. Lots of hiking and slot canyons. Very dog friendly. The KOA in Cannonville, UT will give you access to Escalante and Bryce. Your proposed 2-3 days for Bryce is a bit long. You can do the major hike in the bottom of the canyon in one day and do the canyon rim drive in a half day. With dog you can do the whole park in less than a day. Suggest look at Red Canyon just south of Bryce. It is in Dixie National Forest. Lots of dogs and horses on the trails. Beautiful hiking.
You have no way of avoiding the dog "problem" at Mesa Verde and Zion. There is some good hiking on BLM land in Canyons of the Ancients outside of Cortez.
There are lots of dog friendly trails on BLM land on Cedar Mesa outside of Blanding Utah. Beautiful canyons and Anasazi cliff dwellings.
The Vermillion Cliffs are beautiful. Lots of hiking opportunities on BLM land.
PM me if you have any specific questions.

RE: Route from Tucson to Gold Canyon to Show Low, AZ

Just did that drive in Feb on the way back from Gold Canyon. Beautiful drive between Gold Canyon and Globe. Winding canyon with elevation gains. Drive north of Globe in scenic and good. Salt River canyon has steep decents and ascent back up the other side. Lots of sharp curves. I just kept the speed down and let the exhaust brake do the work. It is a beautiful drive. Just pull off and admire the views in the Salt River Canyon
