RE: Relative light weight trailer recomendations.

If you can find a used Sunline T-2363 (they've gone out of business), it has everything you want and has a solid reputation for having been well built. Camp on!

RE: winter rv park or spot in Florida next Dec.

North Beach Camp Resort in St. Augustine has two rental cabins available. I have no idea what it could cost, but it appears they are not occupied much during Jan - Mar while we are here. Who knows, they might be willing to give you a deal for a long-term lease. Search for their website for further info. Camp on!

RE: North Beach, St. Augustine

Currently here for 3 months. Sand around the campground is soft enough to go barefoot. Beach in front of CG is a little heavier near shore but softer near the water. Sites are plenty big enough for your rig with most having good vegetation between them. Many walk their dogs around the CG and on the beach, and picking up after the pooch is expected. Picturesque IntraCoastal Waterway is right behind CG. There are 3 good restaurants withing walking distance. We've been to about 15 snowbird sites in Fla, and settled on this one for our full 3-month stay. Camp on!

RE: RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE?

My experience is the warmer the weather and the longer the stay the more you need reservations heading south. One night stops should not require reservations. Since some campgrounds do not permit refunds on deposits, we call a few hours before a desired stop and ask if they have room for the night; but we do not make reservations. If you expect to stay in any area for a week or more, I would recommend you call for reservations. Camp on!

RE: best route to florida

You will get many suggestions, and everyone thinks their way is best. Here's what we did on New Year's Day. Departing Cape Cod at 0400 we took I-95 to Rte 287 around NYC to the Garden State Parkway down to the NJ Turnpike to Exit 5. We headed west for a mile to Rte 295 (it parallels the NJ Pike, has less traffic, and it's free), which took us back to 95. We had to go around Baltimore on 695 with our propane, then back onto 95 to Washington. We took 495 (west) around DC and back onto 95. I am tired of looking for a reasonably priced campground which is open this time of year, so we decided to use a hotel in Fredericksburg VA (indoor pool and restaurants adjacent to their parking lot) for our first night. Straight down 95 to 295 around Richmond; the 95 down to Fla. We found another hotel with indoor pool/in-house restaurant in Santee SC for night two. Then we had lunch in St.Augustine at our winter perch. We had an incident-free and traffic-free drive all the way down. Feel free to PM if you have any questions. Camp on!

LOOKING FOR INFO ON RTE 95 SOUTHBOUND

Looking for any info on Rte 95 southbound for New Year's Day and Monday. I'm particularly interested in lane closures and the possibility of construction work being done on those either of days. In the past, it has been pretty traffic free; hoping for the same this year. Thanks for any info. Camp on!

RE: Are there CGs in FL that are less like parking lots?

If your heart is set on the Gulf side, I can't offer a suggestion; but if you would be willing to look at the east coast, I would recommend you look at North Beach Camp Resort in St. Augustine. The IntraCoastal Waterway is on one end of the campground, and the Atlantic is on the other. Thick vegetation separates the sites; there are 3 good restaurants on the water all within walking distance; pretty 3-mile drive to downtown. Google will give you a good look at it. Good luck in your search. Camp on!

Rte 95 Backup in Delaware?

Friend just called re 25 miles of southbound restrictions on Rte 95 just after the Delaware Bridge. Looking at SR 40 as alternative. Anyone with first-hand knowledge of 1) likelihood of lane closures on New Year's Day 2) best return route to 95 after the closures and before 695 around Baltimore. Thanks in advance for info. RE: Best route- Central NJ to FL?

Rte 95 is the shortest, most direct route; and once you're south of DC, it is clear sailing. Stay away from weekdays and peak travel time on the weekend. Safe travels ... camp on!
I agree with the "shortest route, and stay away from peak travel time, etc." part but disagree with "clear sailing south of DC." We visited DD in Charleston SC over Thanksgiving and took I-95 down and back. We had heavy traffic both ways. Southbound there were no issues on the DC Beltway at all (maybe because it was after 5 p.m.) but I-95 from about Lorton to Fredericksburg was the pits. I've found this to be the case almost every time we've used I-95. Part of the reason is this stretch of I-95 doesn't have enough lanes to handle the volume and the other part is the HOV/express lanes end there and merge in from the left. While traffic may not stop it bogs down frequently. This is repeated at nearly every interchange until you're below Fredericksburg.
Northbound I-95 can get slow at the interchanges for Fayetteville, NC. Merging traffic bogs things down; you no sooner get back up to speed then you hit the next interchange. Very annoying.
If you have the time, take an alternate route or time your passage through Baltimore and DC via I-95 very late at night or in the very early hours of the morning, say 3 or 4 a.m.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will be the first to tell anyone my experience on this route is different because of the time and days I travel. We will leave at 0400 on New Year's Day. From past experience I will tell you it is almost traffic free until we are well into Maryland; and not so bad to Fredericksburg because of the holiday. This Monday is also a day off for most, is also a very light traffic day, and will put us almost into Georgia. Between picking the right day AND the right times, I've been able to make the most direct route also the shortest. Coming home we do different routes and have used Rte 81 (and liked it), timing our return to drive through NYC early on Sunday morning. Thanks again ... camp on.

RE: St. Augustine CG's

North Beach Camp Resort! One end is on the IntraCoastal Waterway, and the other is on the Atlantic Ocean. Three restaurants are within walking distance (all on the water). Downtown is a picturesque 3-mile drive. Thick vegetation is found throughout the campground. Facilities are a bit tired but are maintained daily and kept cleaned. Camp on!

Northeast Snowbirds

If you haven't already left, New Year's Day is an awesome, almost traffic-free travel day. This will be our 6th leaving at 0400, and it puts us down to Fredericksburg VA around 3 ... time for a snooze, early dinner with libation, dip in hotel indoor pool (sorry campgrounds...we tried 4 different ones and you all had serious deficiencies), then early to bed. We're deep into SC the next day with lunch in St. Augustine on day 3. Safe travels .... Camp on!

RE: Traveling The Natchez Trace..

We found the City of Natchez interesting. The River View RV Park right across the river from Natchez in Vidalia LA was a good spot. We did only the first 100 miles headed north, and it was great. Nothing but meandering road through farmlands and woods, no hills, no other traffic ... set the cruise control at 50 and was actually able to do some sightseeing myself while driving. You'll find lots of stops marked along the road (get a map). You'll enjoy it. Camp on!

Remember it well. Also remember coming in from church when father said they're were bringing out Oswald. Started watching just in time to see Ruby shoot him. Seems surreal in hindsight. Only other similar date in my memory bank is 9/11/01. Camp on!
