RE: Beware in keys

What occurred was vehicle theft. Call or go to the sheriff and file charges.ROTFLMAO......You are naive about the workings of Monroe County sheriffs office and the political scene in the Keys....He was an "outsider" and the RV Park is a local business, and believe me, the "outsider" looses every time in Monroe County, even if he is in the right, which he was NOT....:B

RE: Beware in keys

My only question is who do you think would have won the auction for the rig on "Storage Wars"? Vehicles cannot be auctioned.Depends on the state. In Florida, they auction them all the time, for storage fees.

RE: Air Card for Internet Service

Air cards are only as good as the parent coverage. Read the fine print real well. Most 2nd tier companies do NOT allow partner coverage, off the parent towers. Millenicom is the only one that does, on their 20g Verizon plan, that I am aware of. I don't know if they have that arrangement with Sprint. Another option is Clear, a partner of Sprint and the company that holds their 4G license. Check the coverage map real well for the areas you plan on being in, as at least 25% of the US has no cell coverage and Sprint is about the worst for limited coverage out of the urban areas. We have both a Clear 3/4G Sprint card and a Millenicom 3G Verizon card, plus our Motosat Internet system. In our area, ATT is the predominant carrier, Verizon a close 2nd and Sprint a very distant 3rd.

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

Bob a.k.a. The Texan ... When leaving Elkhart, head North on SR19 to US 12 just North of the MI state line, then East to US131 at White Pigeon. At White Pigeon turn North on US131, continue North until US2 after the "Bridge". TURN LEFT or West on US2. This will take you to Idaho via 2 lanes, without going across the southern end of Lake Michigan, or detouring out of your way south, to US20 to IN2 to IL17 to IL47 to I80 or way down south to US24. When are you coming through Elkhart? We'll be here again before jumping off on our Alaska trip next May.Thanks Terry for the directions. I did US-2 years ago from MI to WA and loved the trip, so sounds like a plan and some new country for Betsy. We plan on being there at All-4-One around the last week of April, or the 1st week of May. Hopefully we can hook up and have some good old true Amish food.

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

I would rather take the 2 lane, then get back to 80 well west of Chicago. What is the best route doing that? I despise the traffic in the greater Chicago area and we prefer 2 lanes anyway.

RE: Beware in keys

Reasonable..:h..maybe if you were towed from Key West to Miami, but not from the middle keys to the upper keys. Yes, IMO, you were had....:S

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

Your going to hit pretty substantial tolls across Ohio and Indiana. Good road all the way. I-70 is a good alternative with no tolls.Dennis, What is the prefered route from Elkhart to I-80 west of IL, without getting on I-80 at Elkhart? We are going to Columbus OH and then Elkhart for some RV repairs next spring and when we head home to Idaho, I want to stay away from I-80 in IN and IL. Thanks

RE: Where Do the Dead Norcold 1200 Refrigerators Go?

If you do your homework, you will find that a Norcold 1200 will use more power off the grid, than a comparable size, energy star residential fridge. I almost doubled the size with our Samsung rf197 and can go 3 days with just the solar system, then on the 4th day, run the generator for about an hour to top off, for the next 3 days. Just something for you to think about. For me it's not worth pulling out the calculator cuz I'm already in trouble. I have 400W on the roof, and with a few lights (CFL & LED), 2 PC's, the TV & sat Rx, and with me being nocturnal, even at the beach with no heat running the batteries typically hit ~60%. That can take all day to recover. My 1200 draws .750ma, external fans off (they rarely seem to run), and a continuous running fan in the box; that's nothin'. How would that exceed a compressor fridge along with inverter inefficiencies? The idle current on my inverter is twice that that. You forgot the 450w or 550w door heaters, depending on the year of your box and I guarantee the rear fans will work overtime in most regions. Several folks have done a very through test of both and the equivalent size energy star residential uses approximately 35% of the electricity the Norcold uses when on the inverter.

RE: Interstate 80 road condition

The section west of the Mississippi is a very good road. We traveled west on it a year ago. The last time we took the section through IL, OH and PA, it was about the worst road in the US, which was in 2009.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Mark, Don't call or go to the Carrizo Springs yard. Go to the Whitsett yard and speak directly with Jamie, you will have a better chance that way.

RE: Where Do the Dead Norcold 1200 Refrigerators Go?

I know Alliance RV in Florida has a bunch of them setting out back that they use for parts. I would check with any large RV repair location.

RE: Double pull in Baja?

Baja has not been a problem. Arizona is!! They insist the first tow must be a fifth wheel in order to tow a second. Last year I got a warning, in writing.whoever stopped you in AZ was NOT familiar with the definition of a 5th wheel in the AZ vehicle code. Our rig has been inspected 4 time in AZ, once by a AZ DPS Sgt and passed every time, because of the definition in the law.

RE: Hwy 550 from Durango to Ouray, Colorado

Do it on the weekend and you will have much less truck traffic. You have maybe 10-15 miles of road like your wife described and going the way you are, most of your side will be on the inside, but a VERY steep down grade. We did it last year in our rig and it was an awesome trip. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

RE: Gun shows???

Once you get out of CA, the dealers only make up about 50% of the booths and tables. Most other states don't have the laws to suppress gun sales, like CA. Can you get a good deal, yes most of the time, from an individual. I enjoy walking through the shows at home and have seen some awesome buys. The entry price is under $10 at every show I have ever attended and you will always save at least that with the dealers, and again, usually a lot more. The last one I bought from an individual at a show, saved me $95 over the best price I had found up till the show.

RE: Colorado Highway 550

I'm glad a couple people came to my rescue, after Dennis said people like me are crazy....:B..That is the reason I said do it on the weekend, when the big rigs are fewer. It is an absolutely beautiful drive and very doable with your rig, if you have enough mountain driving experience to feel comfortable.

RE: Colorado Highway 550

We did it last year with our rig and toad. We stayed overnight in Montrose and left around 8am. From Ouray to Silverton, it is a very twisty mountain road with NO guard rails. We did it on a weekend, so the traffic was not as bad as a weekday and the road work was at a standstill. Yes, it is very doable, if you are used to mountain driving and not in a hurry. I do NOT recommend it for everyone, but we did enjoy it. The scenery is awesome, with many pull outs available.

RE: Howdy Doody spoons

Here are a couple descriptions and a little info. I just plugged "Howdy Doody Spoon" into Google and started reading. Howdy Doody Silverplate Spoon: Marked ©Kagran and Crown Silverplate on back. A smiling Howdy decorates the handle of this 7" long spoon. The detail is great. You can see the plaid of his shirt! It also says Howdy Doody below his image. Excellent condition. Price: $70.00 2nd article.... Those are cute. They had them for cereal characters and cartoons too. The Howdy Doody spoon estimates in the range of $35 to $45. If you are thinking about selling it, keep in mind that prices will vary a bit depending on the condition of your pieces and where you try to it. Online markets (like Ebay) tend to go for less. I'm not sure where you're located, but I would check with your local antique shops. Local shops will often either buy your items or let you sell on consignment (taking a percentage of the selling price). You can also try listing yourself on places like Rubylane or Tias. Etsy is proving to be a nice alternative to Ebay. RE: 22,000 to 23,000 lb rear axle

Dan, the "one" state that enforces the 20K rule at their toll booths is Ohio on the Ohio Turnpike. However, they do NOT enforce the 20K limit, but have a ± allowance. The last I knew, IIRC, enforcement was set at 21.5K. Also, you will find most 40' models have plenty of weight CCC available on the rear axle. We full time and with everything we carry, we are still 1000# "under" the 20K limit, with full fuel and ½ full holding tanks.
