RE: RV handling with toad attached

With our 33' Beaver Monterey it seems slightly more stable in gusting wind with the toad. Otherwise no difference.

RE: Why are air brakes used on DP instead of a

Our '97 Beaver Monterey has air over oil with disk brakes. The rig is under 26,000 lb, and after 105,000 miles the pads look new. It seems that the exhaust brake does most of the braking except for low speed stops.
I'm not sure why it has air over oil, perhaps it has to with drivers license requirements, but at under26,000 lb that seems doubtful. Seems like both air & oil would be more expensive than just air.

RE: Visiting Death Box Hollow in Utah

If you take route 12 in Utah you will pass through the little town of "Escalante" . The 2 lane paved road is one of the most scenic in the US.
A dirt road called "Hells backbone" and the "Burr Trail also unpaved branch off rt 12. The Burr Trail is more scenic of the two as it decends in elevation, passing through fantastic sandstone formations and escarpments as it descends to the Colorado river. Check with local rangers for the weather before you attempt this drive.
There was some local controversy, should it be paved or not. I don't know if all or part of the road is now paved. These are roads best done in a high clearance or 4 wheel drive vehicle. There are a number of dips that flood and can cut access for days at a time. Well worth the trip if you can make it.

RE: Dry Camp / Fill Freshwater Tank?

Our Beaver Monterey also lacks a gravity fill for fresh water. We have 100 gallons so it lasts a long time.

Replaced rear air con. gasket 2 times, still leaked

We had what I thought was a leaking rear air conditioner gasket. I replaced the gasket twice and adjusted the bolts several times. Still it leaked, soiling the ceiling and dripping out of the air conditioner grill and ducting, very frustrating!
Today I got up on the roof again and checked the shower stall skylight. The calking looked OK, but when I removed all the old calk I could see the calk had lifted in some areas allowing water to enter. The previous owner had attempted to repair some broken areas around the skylight flange screws with gobs of calk. After cleaning and installing 4" wide elastomerac (sp) tape, all is sealed!
The water was able to migrate to the adjacent air conditioner opening and soak both the bedroom and bath ceilings several times.

RE: How the heck do I drive this dang thang?

I had the same first time experience, only it was a very under powered 24' class A. My problem was that I had to pick it up in Dana Point CA during rush hr, and navigate to Las Vegas by myself. Compared to that first trip everything else has been a piece of cake!

RE: adding Solar to 07 Bounder

If your rear cap extends beyond the rear bulkhead you can drill through and down and out the bottom then route under the rig to the batteries. Just calk around the wire where it passes through the cap.
If you keep your panels close to the rear you can minimize the length of the wire run. always a good thing.

RE: captain chairs

We replaced our original captains chairs with Flexsteel units. We ordered them on the web. They have many styles and price points.
They also have ready to ship models available in stock upholstery. We first ordered their ultra leather samples and then selected the color we wanted.
The price was reasonable, the comfort and quality are excellent The chairs just bolt your existing base, so whatever power or manual function the original chairs had will be repeated.
They also had chairs with power leg rests which would have been wonderful for the co-pilot, but I don't recall if they were part of the ready to ship line up.

RE: Low cost Alarm System $36.99

We have found that a game camera with an inferred flash set up outside and pointed at the rig door can also be useful. You can just strap it up to a tree or table leg. Many are available under $100. Nice to have a picture of who is fooling around.

RE: Monaco - rubber trim - top of windshield

We installed a white flexible self adhesive backed rain gutter over the windshield and entry door. We found ours at Camping World. I would think most RV supply stores would have it. Also check online.

RE: Purchasing a Diesel Pusher!!!

100% veggy oil sure sounds like a lot of work and potentially a lot of problems for very little benefit.
Why not just drive it for awhile, sort out any problems and fix whats broke first. Then tinker with veggy thing by starting with a low % mix and working up.

Selling DP, new tires or not?

We are considering selling our '97 DP. The tires are probably due for replacement because of age. Would new tires improve the opportunity for sale, or improve it's sale price? Or would I just be throwing away my money?
Or should I just sell it as is?

RE: Can't put on value extenders

The best bet is for the the tires to be dismounted and have extended metal valve stems installed. They make them for all wheel positions, and they place the fill portion exactly where they need to be for easy access and filling.
Something to consider when installing new tires.

RE: Thinking About Calling It Quits

We have enjoyed touring this great country the last 20 years, and have visited every state but Alaska and Hawaii, 8 Canadian Provinces and portions of northen Mexico, many of those areas multiple times. It was great fun and a real privilege!
We vacillate about selling the rig. Interests change, we have a great home in a great area and we are enjoying it and our many friends.
We may continue to use it for shorter trips, but I would sell it if I thought anyone would buy it.

RE: With a 30 footer do I need to tow a car?

We have a 30' DP and would not travel without a Toad. The Toad expands your travel options greatly, there are just so many place I would not take the DP.
There is almost no extra fuel cost it towing a car, plus your comparing 20-30 mpg for the Toad and 7-10 mpg for the coach.
The only extra cost is the towing equipment. Hooking and unhooking is a minor hassel.

RE: Carpet or laminate flooring for Class A

Having installed and used both laminated and Allure vinyl planks (Home Depot), my money would be on the the Allure or a similar product because of ease of installation. The vinyl planks are flexible, easily cut with hand tools and quick to install. Both products are similar in terms of appearance and clean ability.

RE: Is your Dash A/C enough in the summer while driving?

We use the dash air until about 85-90 degrees plus the two dash mounted fans. We also close the hallway door. If the temps go up we run the propane generator and roof airs.

RE: Duo-therm airconditioner torque for hold down bolts

If you have trouble getting your gasket to seal, or want to do a temporary fix you can do what I did.
My new rear air conditioner gasket leaked even after repeatedly snugging down the bolts. I ran a 3/4" diameter rubber hose around the base of air conditioning and compressed it fit into the gap between the roof and air conditioner. I then ran a bead of caulking at the joint between the roof and the rubber hose.
This forms a dam to divert the water before it gets to the gasket. No leakee now!

RE: Parking without draining batteries

Have you checked your batteries and are they topped up with distilled water? What type battery do you have, 12 or 6 volt? How many batteries? How little power can you get by on? Lights only, furnace, brew coffee and run TV?
Lots of questions with answered based on how amp hrs you need, for how long before running generator.
