RE: What are States known for?

Texas is big on smoked brisket, chicken and sausage.
Early summer you'll see texas peaches.
Mexican food, of course.
and chicken fried steak with cream gravy.

RE: Needles, CA

for overnighting on I 10, we like:
reststop 8 miles west of Sonora
reststop just west of Van Horn
Flying J or reststop at exit 1, Anthony, TX. There is also a Camping World about a mile east of there. The reststop is a welcome center, I think.
Texas Canyon reststop, very pretty
Reststop on I 8 a few miles west of I 10.
Going to Lake Meade:
if you go up 93 out of Phoenix, there is a great little Fed. Campground a few miles south of Wikeup, AZ called Burro Creek campground. Water and dump.

RE: Kansas to California

okay, I see two routes that are scenic.
you can take 56 down to Clayton, NM and get on 64 and go all the way into AZ to the junction of 160 and go on to Flagstaff from there.
there are two passes on 64, with 6 percent grades up and down, and looks like a couple switchback turns. we have not driven this part, so maybe someone else will chip in and tell about it.
From Flagstaff, take 40 on to 93 and up to Vegas. The new bridge is fine. They have you use the inside lane on it.
The other route, less stressful, is 56 to I 25 and south to Albuquerque on I 40. there really isn't much of 66 left, just some turn offs that go through the little bitty towns.
but 40 is pretty scenic and there are things to see and do along the way.

RE: Death Valley Campgrounds?

the furnace creek campground with elec hookups is closed for restoration.
the only other campgrounds with elec are: a small one at Stovepipe Wells, and one over at Panamint Springs, not very well located for seeing the park.
we've stayed several times at the Stovepipe Wells no frills campground and haven't noticed the generators going all that much. you have a great view all around there and it's sorta central to the park.
Mesquite Springs is more like a campground. we've stayed there, too, a couple times. it's a good spot for exploring the north half of the park.

it would help if you told us what kind of vehicle you'll be in.
some roads have mountain passes, others don't.

RE: Hot Western Summer Trip

Balmorhea State Park, TX is a good place if you're ready to stop.
Kartchner Caverns (State Park)just south of Benson, AZ is worth your time if you like caves. The campground has some elec, water and dump and is a pretty area.

Easy Hot Wings

put the wings in a large, sturdy plastic bag.
douse with oil. I use olive oil. you can use any good oil.
just enough oil to give the wings a good coating. I shake 'em and mash them around in the bag to get that done.
sprinkle the wings with McCormack's Buffalo Wings powder (found with the taco and spaghetti mixes).
for 2 pounds wings, I use two packages. for 4 or 5 pounds, I use 4 packages.
mash the bag around and get the wings coated well.
then let them marinate awhile. sometimes mine sit all afternoon, in the fridge of course.
when ready to cook, give them another good shaking or mashing and then put them on the grill, medium hot.
about 10 minutes to each side.
or, if you're doing them in an oven, follow package directions, and do use aluminum foil or you'll be sorry.
you can add different ingredients to the marinade bag if you like it hotter or sweeter. I like to add orange marmalade if I have some.

good road all the way, but do check the weather forecast and highway conditions for the day you plan to use it.

RE: Easiest Places to Get Fuel?

we use the flying j truck stops, fueling with the trucks or using the rv fueling lanes.
some walmarts have gas stations, but some are not real easy for MHs to get in and out of. same with Sam's clubs. just look them over before you pull in.

RE: boondocking is boondocking

ho hum, who cares what you call it? call it whatever you want to.
actually, I use the term "dry camping" for any kind of camping without hookups of any kind, be it national forests or wally worlds.

RE: Yuma CG's

several years ago, we stayed out in the foothills at Fortuna de Oro RV park.
it was neat and clean and had a nice pool, library, sauna and small cafe, etc.
an ice cream truck came through periodically.
it was a hundred dollars (a month) cheaper than it is today.
the only bad sites I could see were the ones right up front, beside the interstate.

RE: What can I do with left over pork shoulder?

I would just make some hot pork sandwiches, either on bread with gravy and mash potatoes, or pile it on some good, toasted bread of your choice.

RE: Taking Fido to yellowstone?

we take our Lhasa almost everywhere we go and leave him in the car, with the windows cracked, for brief periods if it is warm and there is no shade. we walk him in the parking lots as needed. but most of our sightseeing is done from the car, so he isn't left alone much. if we do something that he can't do, we leave him in the MH up to 7 hours. no problems.

RE: Reservations at FHU sites at Mesa Verde NP

be advised that we were in Mesa Verde park in late May of 2011 and it snowed all four days. not a lot of snow accumulation, but not real good weather for hiking around or seeing the great views from the top of the mesa. the tours to the cliff dwellings were going, though, and it wasn't real crowded.
