RE: Dish network

The biggest problem here is Dish.... When you go to their web site it is in Latin or Greek or something. You can never find the correct info or rates. If someone could go to their site and click on RV service and it would give you the rates and info on what you have to do to get one in an RV that would be fantastic. Very true if you go in the "front door" of Dish or Direct. Try these doors instead . . . www.dishformyrv.com DirectTV for Travelers

RE: Dish Network only one LNB not getting my whole package

You need a two LNB setup and if you want to get HD you'll need three because HD is on yet another satellite. If you're in a location that can pick up Dish's Western Arc sats (110, 119, and 129), then you can "misaim" a Dish 500 so that it picks up 119 & 129 instead of 110 & 119. Then you'll get HD. It's a kludge, but it works.

RE: Is HD TV That Important

3) YOU MUST RUN A HDMI OR COMPONENT CABLE FROM THE DISH RECIEVER TO YOU TV... If you're going to actually run wire, do NOT run component wire. Instead run HDMI or opt for wireless HDMI. Or, just run two coax lines from your rooftop Travler (or portable) dish -- one to each receiver. I prefer the two coax solution.

RE: VuQube Portable Satellite System

So until Direct TV gets an automatic portable HD dish with a pay-as-you-go plan, get a Dish Tailgater -- you'll have HD & you can sign up for a Dish pay-as-you-go-plan.

RE: Should price of gas prohibit me from purchasing?

I would really like to purchase a Class A, how much should I let the price of gas influence my decision? Current Class A owners, do any of you regret your decision due to current or future gas prices? Your thoughts, reflections are much appreciated. As long as you budget for it . . . I plan to start fulltiming in 2014, and I budgeted diesel @ $4.50 gal & toad gas @ $3.90 & putting 10k miles on both RV and toad. I bump diesel $0.25 per year & gas $0.20 per year. Gets real pricey in 2023.

RE: Is HD TV That Important

Also, HDTV has the capability of 5.1 digital audio, if that matters to you. Once you've seen HD with 5.1 sound, there's no going back.

RE: Purchasing a Diesel Pusher!!!

I wrote a lot of that article and if you have questions about what to look for, PM me. Bulkhead inspection on a Foretravel Unibody or Unicoach only takes 2 minutes to determine if it could be a major problem and about 10 minutes to to a complete check. Bulkhead problems have two common sources-- lots of salt exposure up north with no rinsing off of salt and long-time leaks in the wet bay that go unfixed. YES, both causes could be easily avoided by just general, simple maintenance. Brett, I've seen several Foretravel owners claim they fixed this issue in their driveway -- apparently just removing any broken chassis bolts & replacing them with new ones. But I remember seeing another more extensive fix in which I think the chassis rails were separated and the rust removed first. What's the story?

RE: Purchasing a Diesel Pusher!!!

Have you had it checked for bulkhead separation? What the hell is that?? I have not had it checked for anything.. I'm getting a real tight deal on it, and the owner is a friend, so I've not gotten to critical with it, just looked it over briefly.. This is why I'm here, trying to learn.. If you are referring to the sides delaminating, that looks pretty good.. Here's a source: Bulkhead separation. This is the Beam Alarm Foretravel web site -- must reading for a Foretravel owner.

RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

Today's coaches are all new animals. The Class A coach brands that survived the last five years have emerged with even better designed and built products... Four your sake, I hope you're right. HR recall data since 2009 looks promising.

RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

The number of recall notices on a coach should never be seen as the be all and end all in determination of coach quality. Maybe, but recall info can tell you a lot about a manufacturer. For example, a number of recalls are about "bad parts" -- like defective Norcold fridges, Samsung microwaves, chassis parts, etc. But other recalls are about design or workmanship issues. And if these keep happening over and over and over again, then I think the manufacturer has quality issues. Perhaps it is a statement of HR's concern for quality, that they would ensure their customers are taken care of by recalling units and getting them right? There needs to be a much broader look into the quality of the coach than just looking at a database of recall notices and then tossing the baby out with the bath water. Read the recalls and judge yourself.

RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

Question for TechWriter? Have you even set foot in any HR product?? Nope. Recall info typicall involves safety issues, not ride quality, fit & finish , etc. This argument of why someone elses coach is not as good as mine goes on and on. Newmar is NOT better than HR. Never said that. Newmars have their own issues, electrical systems for one. I won't go into detail, but as an owner of now 3 HR's, two brand new and my current 08 Admiral, and with 20 years of working on these things, I can say that HR has been the VERY best I could afford in the under $150K class. New maybe, but what about used? Is it possible that Newmar has been less diligent in reporting any issues, or maybe they are a less popular unit, so fewer reports?? If you really believe this, I have a bridge to sell you. I think that people who have no knowledge of a brand directly, should mind their own business and not try to build up the value of their brand by tearing down someone elses brand. The question was about a 32 foot HR product and the complaint comes from the owner of a Newmar DP. When they're defending their brand, owners can be the worst source of information. Same old story, DP is better, Gas coaches are ALL not worthy. JMHO and I'm sticking by it. Gas vs DP? Where'd you get that?

RE: Tripod for dish satellite

If the tripod is for a 3-LNB dish, go with the one from TV4RV.

RE: Upgrading to DISH HD

I currently get DISH standard def with an older 500 dish. To upgrade, I know I need an HD receiver, but do I also need a new dish? Upgrading to DISH HD is well worth it but it is definitely not painless or cheap. You will most likely need a new tripod to accommodate the bigger and heavier dish. You will need to tune all 3 sats to get full HD programming and that is more of a challenge than just tuning the 2 sats you are used to. To avoid frustration, you will need a GOOD sat meter. Here is how I did it and a year later I am still well satisfied. Portable DISH HD Upgrade for an RVTailgater only weighs 10 pounds and finds the birds all by itself, so you don't need a "GOOD sat meter". No frustration either. And the price isn't bad either. $499.00 for the Tailgater and VIP211k. Oh, if you already have a Dish account for the stick house, you can just add the VIP211k to the account and have them turn it on and off as you need it. Will add something like $8 or $9 a month when your using it and nothing when you tell them to turn it off. I know of two that had the antennae stolen. I understand that the antennae is registered to that receiver only, however the thiefs aren't smart enough to know that. NOT FOR ME. :B Yeah, if someone made off with my 1000.4 portable & the tripod, that would be less of a hit than a missing Tailgater. However, another benefit to a portable dish is that you can connect multiple receivers to it -- can't do that with a Tailgater + I've had my portable about 175 feet out.

RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

Techwriter seems hell bent on discrediting the Monaco/HR brand line, but seeing what he drives it does NOT surprise me. He is throwing oranges, apples, grapefruit, and sour grapes out there and saying the brand is the worst ever. As far as I know, since Navistar bought Monaco, there are NO recalls that involve the Navistar built portion of the coach or chassis. Yes there are a couple of vendor supplied items that have been recalled, but even the brand he drives would be affected, if those vendor supplied items were used in his coach. IMO, Monaco/HR is as good or even way better than several of the "major" brand RVs and are having far less problems than the granddaddy namesake of RVs. Ouch! Spoken like a true brand loyalist. Of course my brand, as almost all others, have had their share of recalls, but IMHO Holiday Rambler stands apart -- in a bad way. OP is probably going to buy the HR and was just looking for validation for his decision. But at the off chance he'd spend his money on another better brand, like a used Country Coach, I thought I'd give it a shot.

RE: Low Profile Air Conditioner

In order to get my fifth wheel trailer into a storage building, I need to replace the Coleman Mach 15,000 BTU air conditioner with another ducted unit that is 10" or less tall. Since Carrier is no longer building RV A/C's, does anyone know of another company that builds a 15,000 BTU low profile unit? Thanks...TJ Duo-Therm Penguins -- be advised that the 13.5K & 15K have the same compressor, but the 15K unit has a bigger fan.

I would say that you are going to have a better experience at either MOT or FT buying as they do the PDI and will tell you what needs to be fixed Do they check for bulkhead separation?

RE: Holiday Rambler quality level?

Based on NHTSA recalls, possibly the worst brand you could pick. I went into that site for a list and found nothing about Navistar, HR, or that model back as far as 2009. I didn't look earlier than that. What do I look for? - Go to NHTSA downloads. - Download the FLAT_RCL.zip file (all the recalls). - Open the text file in Access (Excel won't do). - Create a new database & import the recall file as a tabbed data. - Sort the data for what you want to see. Read the "Summaries" for the real poop.
