RE: Onan micro Quiet 4000...No crank..starter relay??

You have a bad control board. Sealed so there is not much you can do but replace it.

Get with Jim. Brushes were a problem with that early model. Onan did come out with a fix for it.

RE: How do you test an Onan genset's volt and amp output

Don't waste your time at that site. They have no one that even knows what you have or how to work on it. Your unit is to old for them.

RE: How do you test an Onan genset's volt and amp output

We normally use a load bank to test them. But you can set it up with a Kilowatt meter or a volt meter that will read cycles.
Your hertz or cycles should be at 63 no load.
This will put your voltage at around 125-130
Turn on your load on.
The cycles should drop to around 60-61 depending on the load. Voltage will also drop to around 115-120.
Remember you have a small generator 3000 watts. So it is not going to carry a lot. It runs at 3600RPM so it is a screamer. This also depends on how good a shape the engine and carb or in

RE: Generac NP55G need help with starter solenoid

From the picture. The battery cable is loose. 12.5 is not that bad,but it could be higher around 13.5. Also depends on how much of a voltage drop you have on starting. Shouldn't be more than 1.5 to 2 volts is what I like to see.

RE: Propane Generator convert to gasoline

Not sure about the legal part. But it could be done. Not going to be cheep. Fuel pump, new carb?,fuel tank and mounting, fuel lines. Be better off with a diesel.Or keep the propane unit.

Never rev it up by hand. Seen that done to many times. Makes the magic smoke come out. Then leaves you with a high repair bill.

RE: OK silly generator question???

No such thing as a dumb question. Don't know your set up. But you should turn off all load before starting any generator or stopping it. Most RVs today have a transfer switch that will allow the genset to come up to speed and voltage. Before switching over.
Starting and stopping one under load. Is the main cause of voltage regulator failure.

RE: Onan generator experts

First make sure it is running on both cylinders. They can run on one fairly smooth and carry part of a load. You also need to check the voltage and hertz with a meter. Should be around 125 at 62 Hertz or cycles as some call it no load.If you think it could be a carb issue. Put some sea foam in a gas can and let it run off of the gas sea foam mixture for awhile.

RE: Generac Gen Sets

I have spent over thirty years fighting with Genajunk units. Going to take a lot to convince me that they have changed. Know a guy with a Guardian unit twenty five hours on the engine. It drinks oil like I drink BEER.

RE: Oil Test Kits

I don't trust oil test labs. Sent in two samples that I knew had diesel in them. Both came back normal.Plus I was told by one lab tech. That test were a rip off.By the time any damage shows up it is to late. Regular oil changes do more to help the life of your engine.

RE: older Kohler Gen. Is it worth anything?

Well cwit it is true. The gas RV units were junk. Now the little ones they used on air compressors. Would run for ever. I have seen some of them that looked like mud balls and you would think they were done for. Crank em up and they ran good. Kohler has some very good engines and generators, but RV units is where they made a blunder.

RE: older Kohler Gen. Is it worth anything?

Doug is correct. Kohler RV units were junk. That is why they got out of the RV business. The Diesel units for RVs was pretty good. But the gas ones were junk. They do build great Standby units. Some of the best out there.

Kohler RV units were one step above Genajunk. They do build great standby units.

It helps bring the gov back to where it should be. Without it the gov may not recover or could surge to the point of making the genset useless.

I would rather have someone ask questions and learn. Than do something that could harm them or somebody else. Plus damage equipment. I tell everyone I talk to. No such thing as a dumb question. If you need to know ask.
