RE: Another way to carry a unmounted spare tire

My 2002 Journey had an unmounted tire under the chassis when I bought it in 2007. It was filled with debris, but I suspect the tube would prevent that. The biggest problem was that the tire was secured with the ratchet type belts, and was so out of shape that it would have been impossible to mount on a wheel. I now keep an unmounted tire in one of my compartments, well wrapped with saran wrap. Paul

RE: Plans, Winter 2012

Our basic plan is to get to Mexico earlier than last year, stay longer, spend more time at the beaches and also see more areas.

RE: CAT 3126 Fan Bearing Lube

Today I finished the modification and now have the lube line coming down on the right side of the motorhome near the batteries. The worst part of the job was getting off the old zerk fitting. I couldn't reach it with anything because it's so close to the pulley. I really didn't want to remove the fan and pulley to get at the zerk. Instead, I used my Dremel tool to grind away a small indentation in the pulley rim so I could get a socket in place. It worked like a charm and I don't think the little bit I shaved off will have any effect on the balance. It was a bit more difficult than I thought, but I will not have to take apart the bed to get to the fitting anymore. Thanks to all for your help. The picture on the CAT Club website tells it all.

RE: CAT 3126 Fan Bearing Lube

Thanks for the information and the referral to the picture. It seems like I'll need a nipple the same thread as the zerk, then a coupling to mate with the hose. A project like that will make my life a lot easier in the future.

RE: How Important Is Long Term Care Insurance

rgatijnet1 x2 I've seen nursing homes and I will not be a part of that. When I become a burden on my family, I will also "check out".

CAT 3126 Fan Bearing Lube

I have a 2002 Winnebago on a Freightliner chassis and it's time to lube the chassis again. It's a job I do myself and I make sure that I get ALL the fittings as shown in the Freightliner diagram. Some of the places are not very easy as I am over weight and getting older. The one that REALLY bothers me is the fan bearing. I have to completely remove the bed and remove the rear engine access to get to the fitting, but at least I know it's done. Is there some kind of rig that I can install to replace the zerk fitting so I can extend a grease hose above the sccess panel. It would be so much easier to just lift up the bed and hit the new zerk fitting with a couple of shots of grease. Thanks, Paul

RE: Owners Manual Magic Chef Micro/ Convection Oven

I had that problem with a Magic Chef several years ago. There was a blown fuse, like an old automotive, glass tube fuse. I replaced it and never had another problem. Paul

RE: Experience removing decals

I removed the decals on my 2002 Journey while on vacation in Arizona. It was late May of 2008 and the Arizona sun did the job. After the sun beat down on one side, I lifted a corner of the decal and slowly peeled it off. As the sun moved around the motorhome I was able to get all the decals off, though the side that got only the late afternoon sun had to be scraped off. Paul

I'm not a Snowbird, but.............

We've been living in Florida for the past 30+ years and do not think of ourselves as Snowbirds, though summer usually finds us someplace in Canada or Alaska. Yesterday we were talking to a group of admitted Snowbirds heading back to Massachusetts for the summer. Since the last few winters have been very cold with killing frost, we decided to spend the winter in Mexico. We had a grand time surrounded by nice Mexican people and many, many Canadians from British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. Two campers from the US were the only Americans we met in almost four months. So, if I'm really not a Snowbird, what am I? Paul

"Wait to start" light failure

On my 2002 Journey with a CAT 3126 330 hp engine, the "Wait to start" light doesn't seem to function any longer. The engine starts easily every time, so I can't complain about that, but I used to get the light even when I didn't think it was that cold. Any ideas about how to trouble shoot this situation? Thanks, Paul

Turning in the Tourist Permit (FMM)

I read in several places that it is necessary to turn in your Tourist Permit as you exit Mexico or it will be very difficult and costly to enter next year. Driving north through Columbia Crossing there was no place that we could see to turn them in. A friend who drove through the same crossing several days later told me that turning in the Tourist Permit wasn't necessary as the process of removing the decal from the windshield and verifying everything takes care of everything. I'm looking for verification that this is true. An email to the Mexican Consulate in Laredo has yet to be answered. Thanks, Paul

RE: 2 for 1 discount coupon books for ALASAKA

We bought the book and saved a bundle, though we couldn't use everything. On our way south, we passed a young family heading north and gave them what was left of the book. There were things in thee that would interest the kids that just didn't appeal to us two old folks. Paul

RE: Paint Job in Mazatlan...

We had our 36 foot Journey painted full body with three colors, clear coat and a design for $4500.00 back in 2008 in Puerto Penasco. I'm still extremely pleased with the job. Last November we had an altercation with the side of the road when we slid sideways on slippery mud. When I posted the pictures, friends guessed the damage to be $3500.00 to $4000.00. We had the work done by a couple of guys in La Cruz (55 miles north of Mazatlan) for $350.00. All figures in US dollars. The job was perfect and the paint matched exactly! Oh, and we were safe. I feel bad for those who keep away from Mexico due to the "Violence". Paul

RE: Last Pemex before Colorado Crossing

When I drove the wife and the dogs over to the auto side, I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THAT SIDE!! I had to make a u-turn and return to the truck side for the X-ray and walk-through. My RV is a 37 foot Winnebago.

RE: Last Pemex before Colorado Crossing

My last night in Mexico was spent in a well lit Pemex north of Saltillo at coordinates 25.61314°N 100.83809°W. When I left the gas station I was happy to find a long acceleration lane because the station is between the north and south bound lanes. Unfortunately, by the time you get on the main road, you have gone past the turnoff for the Monterrey Cuoto. I had to use the next "retourno" and go back to the station and try again. There was no traffic and I was easily able to get to the Monterrey highway. I noticed that most of the toll plazas had ample parking for night stops. There were several Pemex stations, but not with a lot of parking. I traveled northeast on Rt. 40 then back on 85. The route to Columbia Crossing is RT. 2 off 85, south of Nuevo Loredo. Immediately before this turn are TWO Pemex stations side by side. Both have lots and lots of room for parking. This is also the LAST Pemex before crossing, Coordinates are 27.29923 N and 99.59961 W. The crossing was something else. I easily found the booth on the left where a senorita removed the decal from the Jeep windshield and processed the paperwork. She was very proficient. I asked her where to turn in out Tourist Papers and she indicated someplace ahead. The next stop was the toll booth. We paid the toll and asked the woman about he Tourist papers and she also indicated someplace ahead. The next place ahead was US Customs and they didn't want anything to do with the papers. US Customs was a nightmare all by itself. I pulled the motorhome and Jeep on the side with the trucks. When I got to the booth, the Customs agent informed me that the lane was only for the motorhome and driver. He told me to turn around and deliver the wife and three dogs to the Auto side. He had me pull through the booths and do a u-turn, now heading AGAINST the trucks coming in. I did manage to pull around and get in the auto lane. The agent there gave us a quick OK on the contents, but said that the motorhome had to go back to the other side. Also, he felt that Helen and two dogs were enough and I would have to keep one dog with me. They never asked for one paper of documentation for the dogs. Again, I had to make a u-turn and go against traffic to reenter the truck side. I got to the same booth and the agent was ready for me. I was processed quickly and was sent on to be X-rayed. That took quite a while as Helen was standing in the sun with two dogs waiting for me. After the xray, agents insisted on opening all basement compartments and checking the inside. It was a quick and dirty look, but I have no idea what the x-ray showed or what they were looking for. The gave me a pass and I headed out. On the way out I turned in the pass and was told to go ahead and take a left to pickup the family, This was the southbound lane heading to Mexico. With the family on board, a Customs agent surveyed the problem. By moving several sets of cones, I was able to make yet one more u-turn, heading north in the south bound lane. Horns were beeping but I didn't care. If I had to do it again, I would disconnect the Jeep in Mexico and have Helen drive the Jeep and the dogs through the auto/pedestrian side while I drove the motorhome through the truck maze. Helen would have had the Jeep for comfort and A/C while she was waiting for me. From there it was a straight shot to San Antonio and a straight shot to Florida on I-10. Gotta love the American highway system!!!!!

RE: Last Pemex before Colorado Crossing

Yes, I'm talking about Columbia. Right now I'm about 180 miles away and I've been plotting the places where one may stay on the way from San Miguel to Columbia Crossing. Tonight I'm in a Pemex, well lit, at 25.61314 N and 100.83809 W. It'a a little north of Saltillo. I also have the coordinates for other Pemex stations and toll booth area where overnight parking seems likely. Tomorrow will finish the job and I will be able to advise others where thay may be able to stay and where thay may be able to fuel up. Paul
