RE: Is it okay to keep trailer hitched?

I bought an older trailer once that had a brand new fridge. The previous owners arrived home late one night and parked on slanted ground. It killed the fridge which they had left running.
That was our first TT and it made me a believer in leveling.

RE: Is it okay to keep trailer hitched?

I never unhitch unless I am going to want to go somewhere in the tug.
I installed an isolator solenoid which switches off the charge line connection when I switch off the engine. They are inexpensive and they eliminate those "I forgot" moments. I don't unplug except when I unhitch.

RE: Easy way to find TT model you want?

Some brands don't have dealers, the factory sells direct to the public.
Casita and Scamp are in this category, not sure about Escape. They all have web sites.
If you contact them they will put you in touch with someone in your area that is willing to show you their trailer. If you buy one that person gets a commission.

RE: Best light weight camper under 20 feet?

We downsized from a 20' stick-built to a 17'Casita and are delighted with it. It has everything that 2 people need, it is a delight to tow, gets good gas mileage, and is very well built. About 2300 pounds. The factory in Texas sells new ones direct to the public. We bought ours used from a local dealer.

RE: need new tires

I have never seen anyone wear out the tread on a trailer tire, I have seen and had a lot of them that had blowouts. I had one blow out while mounted on the bracket on the rear bumper. It had died of old age on a 1999 trailer.
Get load range D tires, Cs are too marginal.
Raise YES, lower NO!

RE: Tow Vehicle for Small TT

Start by deciding between a pickup and a SUV. If you don't need a back seat, a pickup with a topper provides great storage capacity.
If you need an SUV, then you want a truck based one. "Crossovers" and front wheel drives are basically just tall passenger cars and lack the strong chassis and rear wheel drive of a truck.
I tow a Casita 17 with a now discontinued Chevy Blazer. An Equinox is a crossover.
I recommend some room to go bigger without going huge.

RE: single vs. double axles, torsion vs. leaf

We have had a 16' single axle with leaf springs, two 20' tandem axle with leaf springs and two 17' Casitas single torsion axle.
I find the better aerodynamics of the Casitas make more difference than the axle count. When a tire blows on a tandem axle rig, the other tires are instantly overloaded. We once had three blowouts in two days, I had to buy four tires instead of two. The trailer was a year and a half old.

RE: Sunline awning?

You may have to get one made by a shop that does boat canvas.

RE: Towing with minivan

Astro/Safari are trucks, good for towing. They are no longer being built.
They are rear wheel drive, putting the weight on the driving wheels.
Venture/Uplander/Montana are tall cars, very limited tow capacity.
Front wheel drive, the weight is at the opposite end from where traction is needed.

RE: Scamp vs Casita or ?

Bonding the top and bottom halves is standard procedure on fiberglass boats. How many boats of all sizes are out there. There are a lot more reports about leaky stick-builts than molded fiberglass.

RE: Smaller TT with good ground clearance

Not too big is in the eye of the beholder. It would be good to define the basics first, how many people, what do they regard as must haves.
If I were planning on traveling rough dirt roads I would think twice about slideouts. It would be a real drag if one got cranky in the boondocks.

RE: Scamp vs Casita or ?

The headroom in a Casita depends on which model you get. You don't spend a lot of time walking around in a trailer, but you spend hours sleeping in the bed. I'm 6'4" and do fine in our Casita 17. A 17 has a freezer which the 16 does not have.

RE: Small Trailers at the Portland RV Show

Any trailer that we buy must have a bed that is always a bed and a dinette that is always a dinette. We have that in our Casita 17', we had it in a Sunline 16' some years ago.
I believe in the KISS principle. No slideouts mean no slideout problems. Other things that we don't haul around never cause problems.
The Casita tows beautifully and is good on gas.

RE: Looking to buy first TT

Don't overlook the small fiberglass trailers like Casita, Escape and Scamp. We have a 17'Casita, it is big enough for two and is more aerodynamic for better handling and gas mileage.

RE: OK, need some suggestions........

When you get the furnace installed, check the propane connections by spraying a soapy water solution on them. If bubbles form that is sign of a leak. A gas leak out of control can ruin your whole day.

RE: Texan RV plant

My Casita has the toilet above the black water tank. It does have a "wet" bath, but that is not a problem. It is our 5th TT and by far the best towing one.
