RE: old cats and rabies shots-

thank you all for you info. I was just not sure what to do as I dont want to cause Marble any problems health wise if unneccessary.
We do not have rabies here in NS so my cats dont get a rabies shot but do get their yearly vaccines even though they are inside.
It is an area I am not familiar with so that is why I posed the question.
I am taking her in for her yearly checkup in June and will discuss it with the vet. Her decision will help me to decide whether Marble comes with us or not.
Thanks everyone.

RE: old cats and rabies shots-

Here in NS we dont have rabies. Marble got a routine vaccination last year after not having one because of the built up immunity.
I called border patrols last year and Canada didnt care but the US did. They said if we couldnt prove shots when asked then the animal would be kept in quarintine. I would hate to spend 10 days or so at the quarantine office!!!
I am calling my vet today to see what she says and Marble has to have her check up this month anyway.
All my cats are indoor cats.

old cats and rabies shots-

We are planning on going to the US for a vacation in Sept and taking a couple of cats. I think we are taking Marble as she cant be left home or she will pee on everything. She is 16 yrs old in Sept.
Is it safe to get her a rabies shot. That will be what makes my decision. Is it safe for her? Will it make her sick? She is only 7.5lbs so if she was to get sick she could go down hill quickly.
Can someone explain to me a bit about the affects of the rabies shot.
We have to have it to enter the US not to re enter Canada,

RE: A Rescue Poem

we have been resuced by 8 that we have now, 4 that have passed and many that we have passed onto other homes. It is the most rewarding thing I have done in my life.28 yrs volunteering with our local SPCA and now I am volunteering with the new car rescue group and training to be a responder with the NS disaster animal response team.
I love every minute of it and hope to do it for many more years however my dream is also that someday there not be a need for shelters as every animal has a home. Guess I dream big huh

RE: Our new bud

I recently read this
Shelter animals arent broken. They've simply experienced more life than other animals. If they were human we would call them wise. They would be the ones with tails to tell and stories to write. The ones dealt a bad hand who responded with courage.
Don't pity a shelter animal adopt one and be proud to have their greatness at your side.
I printed this off and framed it and it is hanging on one of my walls to teach me to look at animals at shelters differently than I have been.

RE: Anyone else visit humane societies as they travel?

ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are from Nova Scotia where i volunteered with our local shelter for 28 years and now am volunteering with the cat rescue orgamization,. We always like to go in and look and leave a donation. having 8 cats we KNOW we cant take another but I always get a fundraiser idea to take home and help out the animals here.

RE: what could be the problem

Sounds like she is dying. As an example my MIL quit eating, had trouble holding her bladder. Once she was diagnosed it only took a week. I think it might be time for you to consider putting her down. Think of it as better than what you are going through and what she is going through too.
she hasnt quit eating and can hold her bladder all day she onluy goes once a day
she runs and plays when she wants to

what could be the problem

marble will be 16 in Sept. she was always a small tortie weigning no more than 8 lbs. She is smaller now and I had her checked in the fall and she was healthy but small. She can eat a can of food in the m orning and one at night and anything else you can give her and she gains no weight.
Also lately she has been sleeping in the towl rack above the washer. The litter boxes are on the floor . She has been peeing and craping in the laundry basket of dirty clothes or on the washer. She only goes to the bathroom once a day no matter how much she eats or drinks. Usually at night I make sure she goes before she goes to bed for the night so she doesnt pee in the bed. She doesnt drink a lot of water.
Is it because she doesnt want any of the other cats around when she uses the box so thats why she does it on the washer? Is she getting senile? Is there a medical issue.
I am planning to take her to the vet for a check up.
Any ideas? There is no blood in her urine or feces and she doesnt look sick or act sick shes just thin.

RE: Small dogs confiscated - need homes!!

Nice to see people are helping these poor animals. Nice to see donations etc being sent in. God love these little ones. There is no need of this in todays society but as I know all to well Quebec here in Canada is the biggest breeding grounds in Canada. Its time to stop this behaviour

litter throwing question

Chevy our new rescue is an amazing cat. He is fun, mischievious but a real nice pet. We love him. However he has this issue with "covering" all food dishes whether full or empty, "covering" the dish of crunchies as if he was trying to scratch something over them like dirt outside after using the bathroom. We ll he does the same with the litter box except he fires it all out of the box whether he used it or someone else did. What a mess!!!!!! Its like walking on a sandbar in the middle of the night.
I dont want to get after him as he might associate that with using the box and stop using it. what can I do? we are thinking about taking her with us in the rv but my gosh can I keep up with the mess?
I cant use a covered litter box as Marble is terrified to go under or in anything since she was abused as a kitten. a couple of the others are too "big boned" to fit in one.
We keep the 2 big litter boxes very clean so its not an issue that they are dirty its just his "thing".
Any ideas? should have called him Chucker

RE: Lost my baby.

First of all I offer my deepest condolences. I know how hard it is to lose a pet but a special pet like this one must be the hardest.
Don't worry I am sure that Sandy taught baby everything he needs to know to go on. Animals are so wonderful to each other. I see it hear with my deaf one as she depends on them to sort of give her a que to certain things and they look out for her.
You had a really special cat there and perhaps one thats purpose was also to teach you about animals and their needs.
Thank you for such a long life you gave Sandy. What a lucky cat.
I know how much it hurts but Sandy will be in Heaven helping those up there that need her.
Thank you for giving animals a safe and loving home, there are so very lucky.
Take care and please continue helping animals in need in Sandys memory.
