RE: Rand McNally 7710 wrong directions

The doggone things are frustrating. My old Street Pilot 330 had a lot of quirks, but it knew where SOME things are that my newer nuvi 1300? does not. Rockport, TX, the old one new where the PO is, even if it did take me several unnecessary miles out of the way. The new one doesn't believe there is a post office there. Neither knew there was a much closer one in Fulton. Unforgiveably, neither knows where the DQ is. Yes, the nuvi was updated on purchase. Still dumb. Still tries to take me in circles. Sometimes I use it just for amusement.

RE: Not again

"If they are used and there are no funds or a closed account then that can be considered fraud. Fraud is illegal and makes you subject to arrest if you’re stopped, and depending on your state you may not be able to re-new a drivers license."
Say what? Fraud? Maybe, but not by the poster. He didn't commit the misdeeds, the thief did. If the thief robbed a convenience store with a knife stolen from the poster, would the poster be subject to prosecution for that crime? Certainly not.
Of course, the loss/theft should be reported to the law enforcement agency where it occurred, if only so the card could be returned if found.

RE: RV wreck Hard to understand

"...the law in some states that allow passengers in the trailer..."
Aren't passengers generally allowed only in trailers with gooseneck or fifth wheel hitches? I haven't seen anything that would indicate other than a ball hitch.
I came across that stretch of road March 27 on our way up from Texas. It is a long, downhill, left hand sweeper, fairly steep. This is an area of eroded plains, with plenty of wind often coming through those gulches. We really don't know what happened; this one may take a while to reconstruct - but it will happen.

RE: gooseneck conversion hitch

The structure of a gooseneck trailer is largely out there to be seen. Take a good look and compare to the fifth wheel frame and reinforcement. There is no contest as to strength.

RE: gooseneck conversion hitch

A Search is an excellent idea, as you will find yourself inundated with the opinions of people who have never had one, and know of no failures directly related to the gooseneck adaptors, but will tell you they are the work of the devil. :)
IMO your best bet would be to hit a large campground and talk to people that actually have one on their 5th wheel, and get their input. Otherwise all you're getting are opinions and prejudices.
Nope, not the work of the devil. The work of Peterson Industries, who specify in their warranty that it is void if a gooseneck adapter is used.

Here is a very interesting article. Clicky
Makes you wonder about the accuracy, when they show an Allegro bus and call it similar to a Freightliner straight truck.

RE: Select Comfort ?

By the way a normal queen size is bigger than an RV queen size:
60" x 74" RV Queen (Short Queen)
60" x 79" Residential Queen
Good point, measure your available space. Not all RV's have RV-size mattresses - some have full size.

RE: Decided on new Brakes...

My factory brakes have been great. I am at 112k, a third of it with the fiver on, and still have about 30% of the pads left.
No one else ever drives it, and I irritate the heck out of traffic by coasting to stops. I don't impede traffic, but I don't slide to a stop, either.

RE: Select Comfort ?

We have had ours - the least expensive model - in our fiver for five years now. No trouble at all. We occasionally boondock; I have a 400 watt inverter and a gennie, so no problems there (our boondocking area is around 8800 feet).
People either love it or hate it. Use that trial period...

RE: Ease of parking at Goose Island State Park??

Oh, sure, that would be Gary Eckerdt, Gary's RV Repair. He installed a rinser on my gray tank, and downspouts, six years ago. Nice guy.

If you hustle, you might see some whooping cranes before they all leave. There are a few not far off the road between Goose Island and the Big Tree.

RE: An Urn for Maggie

Absoutely beautiful and what a wonderful way to memories of Maggie close at all time. Whoever made the urn needs to be recognized for his abilities. God be with you and Maggie.
(Sorry; I've been out of commission due to having a steamer trunk-size tooth pulled.)
You're right, the maker should be recognized. His name is Curtis Alston Laudermilk, of Bryan, TX. He apparently has a love affair going with mesquite wood, and I understand that completely. His wife, as is mine, is a quilter. I haven't seen her work, but I would guess it is also awesome.

Right you are, link edited. Thanks. When I have it in hand, I'll get a better picture.

An Urn for Maggie

We encountered a woodworker here in south Texas (info on request) that had goods of mesquite wood, which is a hard, dense, wood of - to me - uncommon beauty. It was just what we wanted for an urn for Maggie's ashes.
Mag's urn
It should arrive later this week. We are happy to finally have a permanent place for her remains.

RE: What to do with Home while Snow Birding

We shut off the water at the road, blow it back to the main, blow out the house, put antifreeze in the drains and toilet, the dishwasher and washing machine get antifreeze then run the pump, all the electricity is off.
We, too, are in a rural area with no reason for anyone else to be there, and it's a looong dead end. Breakins are so rare that I haven't heard of any since we have been there, three years. Well, except for those pesky bears. To address that, we have steel doors, round knobs, and the windows are either too small or too high for Mr Bruin.

RE: Winter Texans headed north

Friday, they drilled right through a can of tomato juice laft on the picnic table, and drained it dry.
Sunday, noon-thirty, and still raining. Had planned to go to the King Ranch yesterday, but gave it up and went to Charlie's pasture to shipwatch. Not much business there, either.

RE: Winter Texans headed north

An old timer once told me that "the skeeters were so big that a great many of them would way a pound!"
I don't know what they weigh, but if you kill one and don't bury it, it will stink. Air Force retiree next door swears they have tail numbers.
Today's weather in Rockport: Rain. All day. High was 53 at midnight. Low was 53, next midnight. Variations were in wind and rain intensity. Lots of people have left already. Lucky me, I have a date with a dentist next week, so we'll be around probably til the 21st or so. I can see across the park again, and parking at the clubhouse is easier. Just about right...
If you're still here, check out the BBQ shack's new sit-down restaurant. Mighty fine!

RE: It's time for Rainbow bridge

You have our sympathies and prayers for peace. Rest in peace, Shasta. It has been a crummy ten days in our RV park community; two furkids have gone to the bridge - a beautiful old warhorse of a bird dog, a German shorthair pointer, and a gorgeous blue-eyed blue heeler.
There's a party at the bridge tonight...

RE: State of Residency

Gotsmart, got that t shirt six years ago. Registered voter, CCW, titles and registration, insurance, the whole shmear. Including
"JOE DOE
#234
10 MAIN ST STE 11
HERNDON VA 22071-2716"
All was well until the CDL renewal last March (DW has regular license). Each of us had to produce the same identification documents required for a passport, for Pete's sake. DW's license remains in its old format. Mine insists I live in a Quality Inn in Sioux Falls.
I have a low tolerance for both irrational and irrelevant, thus my frustration. I'm functional for now. Who knows about next week?
