RE: CW Shipping = RIDICULOUS....customer service is even worse.

I have, when passing through, been in chnook507's CW. He may or may not be correct that the folks there are rude. I wouldn't know; after a half hour in the store I was unable to make contact with anyone. It's not so much the shipping costs that are aggravating, it's the extra charges that get attached. Last spring I shipped a package from Columbia, MO to Ft Collins, CO. It was less than five pounds, approx 2.5" x 10" x 8". It was an electronic item in its original shipping packaging, which was as new (not previously shipped). It absolutely, positively, etc. The local FedEx store was open, but the computer system was down. They couldn't weigh it, they couldn't tell me a price, nada. Didn't matter; it had to go. I left them my card number and went on my merry way. Several weeks later I noticed that there had been no charge to my card. Another week, a bill caught up with me - for $87.00! Included was a charge because the packaging wasn't up FedEx standards (no, when it arrived it had NOT been repacked). There was an $11.20 fuel surcharge. There was an $11.00 charge for billing me because I did not have an account w/FedEx. Grudgingly, I paid the bill - except the no account surcharge. Wasn't my fault their system was down, nor my fault the staff didn't charge the card number left with them, at their suggestion. Sluggo I have never in my life heard of Fed Ex shipping on a five pound item being $87.00. There was obviously some error becuase this is not their standard shipping rates. I would not have paid it without escalating that one up the chain. You mentioned $11 charge for no account and an $11 fuel surcharge. Something doesn't add up, what was the other $65 charge for? Five pound packages do not ship for $65. I also don't understand "packaging not up to fed ex standards". You put items in one of their bags or boxes. Why didn't you just put your item in the mailer when you left it with them? But I never would have left my package with them either, not until they gave me a receipt. I just do not trust Fed Ex much more than I do the PO. Once I have a tracking number I WOULD trust them much more than the PO, but not until then. Sounds like it went next day AM delivery, that could generate that kind of charge. Yes, it was next day (Saturday) am delivery, as implied. I did have a handwritten receipt before leaving the store. I did NOT put items in one of their boxes, as stated it was in its original, unused, shipping container. I think it was the $11.20 fuel surcharge on a 4+ pound item that got my attention. Apparently, FedEx has gold-burning aircraft. Sluggo

RE: Copying Program files to new computer?

I am not skilled with PhotoShop, so can't make an honest comparison. That said, a freeware called GIMP works great for me. Sluggo

RE: Spoon down the toilet

GOOD stainless isn't magnetic. Much flatware isn't all that good, and is attracted to magnets. Fish around in your kitchen drawers with a magnet. You might be surprised. Sluggo

RE: Bring on all the Tips, Secrets, Advice!!

bkkalk6,, another good source is etrailer.com and their associated sites. You may want an emergency roadside service plan. There are several, including one from Good Sam. I have had excellent luck with Coach-Net. Many parts of your RV are RV-specific. Many aren't, and can be had at hardware stores or home centers. You'll figure out which is which as you go along. Main thing is, get out there and do it! Sluggo

RE: Need campground around Pikes Peak area

Mueller is a beautiful park, but like many Colorado parks, it is reserved well in advance. Weekends are especially difficult. It isn't everyone's cup o'tea, but we like this one. Not fancy, no concrete, but utilities are good, it's quiet, and it's available. May Museum RV Park Sluggo

RE: Urine smell in bathroom

"3) Turn night light on at night to improve aim! " We have a cabinet over the toilet. I put a cheap Dollar Store fluorescent light (battery powered) under the cabinet so I could see at night without turning on the overhead light - which shines over the top of the door right into DW's eyes. Sluggo

RE: Newbie here

Gator, I know you didn't ask this - but do have an emergency roadside service. I and others have had good experiences with Coach-Net. There are other services, too, so ask around. To contact Coach-Net, it is best to call, as their website can be confusing if you aren't affiliated with one of the "brand" clubs. 877-250-6732 Coach-Net website clicky I do carry basic tools. The ones I use most are in the door pocket - regular pliers, a four way screwdriver, a tire gauge, a smallish adjustable wrench, and a set of Allen wrenches (for the bikes). I rarely get into the "big box". Sluggo

RE: New dometic digital thermostat?

My Hunter uses two AA batteries. They are a tad bit loose; I have to shim them a bit to keep them tight in their slots. Remember, the Hunter was not built to be mobile - so some adaptation may be in order. Mine has been very good about batteries; they will last a year or more. One quirk is that if the batteries do go flat dead, the system will keep on doing whatever it was doing when they went dead. If the heat is on, it will keep heating, etc. Sluggo

RE: NEED HELP!!! ELECTRICAL ISSUE

"Start with the plug and follow the wires." Literally. I have had shorts/crossed wires develop in both the tow vehicle end and trailer end of the connection between the two. I would first unhook the trailer's battery(s) and open up the tow vehicle end of the umbilical (electrical cord from tow vehicle to trailer) and look for loose screws or chafed wires allowing cross-contact. RE: Does your furry friend sleep in your bed?

I can only wish. Maggie slept next to my left side, with her muzzle on my shoulder, for thirteen years. Most of these years, our calico cat was, until I fell asleep, on my chest with her head under my chin and paws on each side of my neck. When I drifted off, she moved to the foot of the bed. Callie died in 1999, at 19 years five months. Mag passed in 2007, at 13 years and 13 days. (On Friday, 13th April). Kaia moved in with us in May of 2007. She is, according to a majority of guesses, wire haired fox terrier and blue heeler. She will come up on the bed and play, rarely cuddles and then for only a short time. Then, she leaves our room and stations herself between us and the door. God help anyone who comes through that door without an invitation. I previously related how she saved us one night when she insisted I get up to see what was bothering her; it was a fire starting under the sink in the water heater wiring. She cares for us very well, but we do wish she could break instinct and sleep with us. We would love to have her. Sluggo

RE: A/C in Bedroom - Wall Mounted T-stat or No?

I would definitely go with the wall-mounted thermostat. I am about to install the Dometic Penguin low-profile 13.5K unit with the deluxe 5-way airbox and the control package that will allow me to use the $20 Hunter digital thermostat from Lowes. I think you will find that the Dometic digital thermostat is quite expensive. In addition to the 120VAC to operate the A/C, you will need 12VDC for the controls. Good luck, Happy New Year, and God bless! :B If the Hunter or similar stat is used, no power supply to the stat is required. They use a couple of AA cells. And thanks for the reminder, I need to change those batteries! Sluggo

My daughter bought a snow blower last fall, to ward off the white stuff. So far, it has worked pretty well in Columbia, MO. Maybe it's the "Fear This!" decal I got for it... Sluggo

RE: Natural Gas as Fuel

"...perhaps the government would make some sort of subsidy grant available to help with the cost of conversion to NG, to promote the use of this cleaner, plentiful fuel, instead of oil!" What, more Solyndras? And how cheap would that NG be if saddled with the road fuel taxes gasoline and diesel pay? Our city tried four NG fueled S-10 Blazers. There was one fueling station within rational reach. Turned out we were their only customers, so they pulled the plug on the operation. Then, we were left with four vehicles with zero market value. Our fleet manager had a choice of retrofitting them for gasoline, with all that implies for lost shop time and expense, or junking them. Off to the crusher. Incidentally, they were kind of doggy compared to the gasoline version, and cost a bunch extra to buy. Sluggo

"Where I live the batteries freeze, so winter time rv'ing require new batteries every trip. Or else one might forget--and have no (CO) alarm." Lithium ion batteries function much better in the cold than others. They ain't cheap. Neither are funerals. Sluggo

I use someting like this: (Clicky) Blinds are better than tents, IMHO. They don't have a floor, which you don't want. Yopu can simply prop up one side for added air, if needed. Most have plenty of ventilation built in. I found mine at Dick's several years ago for $30. Sluggo
