RE: whats the best Bang for the Buck RV gas mileage wise?

stevekk We had ours made in Texas in 2006. It had the 5 cyl diesel and we have gotten an accurate 22.5 mpg overall. (This was calculated by recording gallons pumped at each fillup and miles traveled from the odometer.) The price was about $67k. The last I looked prices were about $10 k higher but they might be more now. I would suggest doing a rough calculation of the Sportsmobile price before buying anything else, new or used. Some of the Sprinter conversions list at well over $100k. The current versions of the Sprinter use a more powerful 6 cyl diesel that gets a couple of mpg less.

RE: Protectant for hardwood cutting board stove topper?

The oil used prevents water damage when the board is washed. I've always used mineral oil to treat the boards. Plastic boards are easier to sanitize than wood but I thing that they are harder on the knife edges. So I cut meats on a plastic cutting board and everything else on a maple board.

RE: whats the best Bang for the Buck RV gas mileage wise?

thanks for the input. I am leaning to purchasing a sprinter. Wonder if you had any problem purchasing diesel? Or "filling up with the 18 wheelers"? Finding diesel is really not much of a problem. There are lots of gas stations that also sell diesel so you really don't have to get in line with the big trucks if you don't want to. In searching for the right B for you, the most important consideration is the floor plan. B's have limited space so it is critical that the model you choose uses that space in a way that suits YOUR needs. As a starter, I would suggest a careful look at the Sportsmobile website (www.sportsmobile.com). This has an enormous amount of info on B floor plans, systems, options, etc. Sportsmobile is a relatively small company that makes semi-custom vans to your specifications. You can use their models to create your own plan and you can add up prices on the various options to determine the price beforehand. Compare their price to those from the larger companies. After 80,000 miles, our 2006 Sportsmobile is still in excellent shape.

RE: Picture posting thread...anyone into it?

atr1955 Go for the longer lenses. I don't know what the f stop is on your 55-300 but if it is f/5.6 or higher your camera will not autofocus with a 1.4X telextender and a 2X telextender is out of the question. I find that a 400 mm lens is about the minimum focal length for wildlife photos. I use a Sony 70-400 zoom and wish that it were longer. Unfortunately, lenses longer than 400 mm are prohibitively expensive and are too heavy to carry around.

Statues work untilthe birds get used to it. It might help to keep moving it.

RE: Driving Question

A good set of mirrors including both flat and convex mirrors helps a lot in those situations. Another option that I know exists (but don't know much about) are options for one or more backup cameras that increase your rear vision.

RE: Balance Between Planning the Trip and Being Flexible

The only places where we make reservations are the Florida State Parks because they only have reservable sites. Most other places, including the National Parks, retain some first come first served sites. We always plan to arrive during the week instead of weekends. We also travel in a 22' Class B that will fit into almost any site.

RE: Fuel for Sprinter based motorhomes

Shearwater wrote: Occasionally, however, you can find stations selling #2 low sulfur diesel instead of the ultra low sulfur diesel that is now standard. The 2007 and newer Sprinters require the ULS diesel. Now that is interesting, it suggests there is problems with supply of USLD. Here with our greater reliance on diesel, changing to USLD was pretty quick. I don't know that there is a problem of supply for the ULSD fuel but it is more expensive than the older diesel fuel and vehicles built prior to 2007 run perfectly well with the older stuff.

RE: Fuel for Sprinter based motorhomes

The Texan's answers are pretty much spot on. As you get further from the Interstates and big cities, more stations have diesel fuel because of the popularity of diesel trucks. Occasionally, however, you can find stations selling #2 low sulfur diesel instead of the ultra low sulfur diesel that is now standard. The 2007 and newer Sprinters require the ULS diesel.

RE: OMG, otc medicine's out of date....

Before I retired I worked in a contract research laboratory that tested pesticides for the EPA and pharmaceuticals for the FDA. The tests were paid for by the company that made the materials and the results of the tests sent to the appropriate government agency. The test for the expiration date is called a storage stability test. It involves storing the material at a constant temperature and periodically removing a sample and testing it for chemical purity. If the purity drops below a given level within a year, the expiration date is assigned appropriately. If no appreciable loss in purity occurs within a year, the experiment is halted and the material is given an expiration date of one year. The one year time span is usually chosen because all these tests are expensive and the companies don't want to spend more than necessary. In addition, it is possible that extending the study may delay the release of the product and that would be really expensive. The takehome message is to place close attention to the expiration date for a drug with an expiration date that is less than one year - that is likely to be important. If the expiration date is one year, the drug MAY be stable for much longer than that but there is no guarantee.

RE: How to make money in the stock market.......

This sounds very much like the schemes that were used to make lots of money in derivatives but which eventually caused our last (and ongoing) economic crisis.

RE: Painted Bunting

That is a bird that truly deserves its name. I've only seen them a couple of times and I've only had one chance to photograph them. RE: More effective than DEET

Capric acid and other short chain fatty acids stink to high heaven. You will repel more than mosquitoes. (Capric, caproic, and caprylic acids are named for goats - genus caprus - and are responsible for the way goats smell.)

RE: Ipad Navigation in the UP of Michigan - coverage areas?

Cell phone service is pretty spotty in the UP. Cities and towns have service but once you get off the main roads it's pretty iffy.
