RE: Trailer hitting cab alarm. Is there such a device?

My Ford has reverse sensors, of course, activated in reverse, and the sensors are on the lower bumper. For a running/full time application, maybe a similar aftermarket device, wired to the battyer, or switched, so its always on when demanded. I am not sure of you can adjust the depth that the sensor triggers, but if so, perhaps a device like the one below with the sensor mounted on the rear window to detect when the trailer cap comes "close" to the cab (close of course is the variable to each rig/truck set up). http://www.backup-sensor.com/

RE: Who uses the dry winterizing method ?

I do a bit of both also. One way to blow the lines I found, was to use a twist-on coupler/hose repair joint which mates nicely to the air gun. Attach the male end to the rig, dial the compressor down to 10 PSI or so, insert the air gun, and pull the trigger. WIth the lower drain valves open, all the water goes bye-bye. I add some pink to the fresh tank too, and try to run the pump to get some pink out the taps, then back to blow things out one last time. Works for me. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/72580_10150290578105123_673820122_15093143_7933707_n.jpg http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/66343_10150290578195123_673820122_15093149_1928088_n.jpg

RE: Glad I bought a slider hitch...

One thing with sliders, and I noticed it in the first picture- try to restrain loose items like the draw bar, wood, tools, ... so they do not jump into the slide path and prevent the gear from moving. For me, I have a Pullrite, with a channel down the middle that branches off each side. If anything jammed in there, I'd be in touble and not know about it until its too late. http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k576/gocamp100/53321939_photobucket_101766_.jpg

RE: Any body towing a 5er with the New EcoBoost F150.

Wow Sean32 - what are your weights? Dry pin was advertised at 1050. When I went to a truck scale (side of the road one that I am sure has an error factor when weighing our feather weights compared to the multiple tonnages of trucks), I weighed under 1100 on the pin (diff between hitched and unhitched). This was with 1 60lb propane tank, and battery in the front area. At the wheels (hitched) was 6600 lbs. Approx 8000 for the trailer. Seadoo is 1100 pounds with trailer, overall is then 9100. My pull limit is 11,300. My cargo rating is 1650 if memory serves. The hitch is 318 lbs. I am at the limit on the rear. To help with the 2" sag I had, I added a set of supersprings which really help with level. The truck has a 5'6" bed.

RE: Any body towing a 5er with the New EcoBoost F150.

I have about 3" between the corner of the FW and back of my cab if on level ground. I have about 5" but came close last time out going up a hill while turning, so I bought the 3" lift kit for the hitch. Now the high Ford bed walls are not a concern anymore.... http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/320716_10150765412655123_673820122_20085019_1223575_n.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/302430_10150776686095123_673820122_20220184_1338331_n.jpg

RE: Any body towing a 5er with the New EcoBoost F150.

I don't see how a F-150 with a 5.5' bed will pull a fifth wheel and not have the trailer smash through the rear window when doing a sharp turn. Google Pullrite 12K sliding hitch when you have a moment... http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/29994_10150171118630123_673820122_12042049_719680_n.jpg http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/29166_10150175062260123_673820122_12125565_5223015_n.jpg http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/35886_10150201676710123_673820122_12868534_5359551_n.jpg

RE: Pinbox hits the tailgate in "Manouvre" position

I installed a 3" lift kit on my Superglide to prevent collisions with the tailgate and bed sides when turning and climbing at the same time... http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/320716_10150765412655123_673820122_20085019_1223575_n.jpg http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/302430_10150776686095123_673820122_20220184_1338331_n.jpg

RE: Has anyone double towed with a Cougar High Country?

Just how long is the typical frame warranty. 12 months. :(

RE: Has anyone double towed with a Cougar High Country?

We have a 2011 High Country 291 RLS and I would like to tow a small motorcycle trailer behind it. Max weight would be around 1000 lbs. I realize the High Country is a light weight unit but our dealer said a hitch can be welded to the frame. Has anyone done this or towed with just a rear bumper hitch? Thanks Not a High Country, but a Cougar X-Lite. I had a welding shop put in 2 cross pieces and a couple ladder supports between, and some gussets. I tow a 1000 lb seadoo, sometimes with 2 mountain bikes too, no problem on that. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/29709_10150190975620123_673820122_12548172_1573437_n.jpg http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/29709_10150190975635123_673820122_12548173_2205244_n.jpg http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/29709_10150192270905123_673820122_12581396_5491979_n.jpg

RE: Bed liner and 5th wheel hitch?

I have the Ford drop in bedliner in my truck. It is way tougher than any spray stuff. I have the Pullrite Super Fifth under bed mount hitch. The hitch doesn't touch the bed liner. Works very well. Ditto. With the Pullrite, and super rails, the pins that the hitch mounts on up top, and twist into the mounts on teh frame below, clear the liner. Pullrite also has longer pins if required. I use the cut out pieces to pop into those holes when I remove the hitch so teh liner is back to flat. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/29994_10150171118655123_673820122_12042053_5314470_n.jpg

RE: Suspension upgrade for TV

I installed a set of Supersprings. Its a long "helper" spring that only comes into play when there is a load on the truck rear. This means, unloaded, your ride does NOT change. Mine rose less than 1/2" after install, and dropped 1/2" with 5er hitched, vs 2.5" without the springs. Helweig also makes a set. Easy to install. Does not require undoing of any OEM hardware. http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/28609_10150185618595123_673820122_12384416_408279_n.jpg

RE: raising fifth wheel

Same truck, camper, and, Country!! ;) I ordered a 3" lift kit from Pullrite for mine, part 3108. The rails go on the bottom of the hitch thus raising it up. I had 2 close calls going up an incline, when turning, and that was enough for me. I think I paid $165 Cdn locally. Is there a similar rail kit for yours? S

RE: Such thing as 1/2 Towable..?

Keystone Cougar 27SAB. 6900 unloaded, 1050 pin (dry). Rear bunk, 1 slide. These days, the term 1/2 ton seems to apply to compact trucks. Some modern F150s have over 3/4 ton payload rating.
Sean32 08/14/11 07:26pm Fifth-Wheels
RE: Looking for just the right fifth wheel

My Cougar X-Lite 27SAB fits that list nicely. Storage shelves in the bunk with door, bunk room has its own hard door. 2 closets in the main. 6600 pounds dry. Adequate counter space, could use more, comes with an extension that we rarely use...

RE: Making all 5ers Look Bad

Everytime a passing lane came up it was sticking wide open and accelerating your rig to 75 mph forcing vehicles to speed to 90 just to get by AND only allowing 1-2 vehicle by when all 20 could have easily passed. Amazingly the second that passing lane was gone your accelerator slowed the rig back down to 45-50 mph. Sadly, this is not limited to dumbass's towing trailers. Happens ALL THE TIME around here too, with plain jane cars, trucks, SUVs, mini-vans, .... :( I hate that.

RE: A Question Of Physics

30' long trailer axles centered 15' from pin and 15' from rear tank 100 gallon tank, 800 lbs of water 15 / 15 x 800 = 800 800 lbs are removed from the pin weight 800 + 800 = 1600 1600 lbs are added to the trailer axles. In a single point fulcrum, hands down agreed. With a dbl pointed, joined through and equalizer of some form, I don't think its that cut & dry. True also that the tank/axel/pin will not be 50-50, it was just a point. If I ever get to the scales loaded with H20, I'll measure pin-axel-tank center and take the 2 measures. Soon.

RE: A Question Of Physics

Probably the reason no one has gone throught that exercise is because the result is so in-your-face obvious. The only question is the geometry of the particular trailer. If you know that, the result is easily calculated without running the scale. I don't think its that obvious. With a rear mount tank, say the same distance from the axels as the pin is to the axels, I think the suspension works against making it a 1:1 weight ratio at the pin which it would be if it was a single axel. You a betting man???

RE: A Question Of Physics

The answer to his question is no. There so far far has been no one who has weighed both before and after. I am still waiting for that too... I wanted to see if adding/reducing weight to a tank, which is BEHIND the dual axels, changes anything at the pin. Tempted to go myself soon, 'cept its a toll highway about 45 minutes away.

RE: A Question Of Physics

Great question... its on my bucket list of things to do. My fresh water tank is all the way back. I want to weigh the rig with water, then without. Iam thinking, that with a single axel trailer, it is for sure a teeter totter, where a full tank aft will lift the pin an equal amount (assuming the distances are equal). I wonder however, with torsion and springs, and dual-axels, that maybe these suspension devices counteract the teeter totter effect, so its no longer 1:1 at the pin. There is a truck stop a few miles from where I am, down toll Hwy 407, which I want to test this question at next time I go down that way. Great question.

RE: dodge ram 1500 shortbed 5.5 hitch for fifth wheel

5'5" is too short even for a slider. I have a 5'5" AND a 12K Superglide and it works perfectly. :R
