RE: Veterans Day weekend @ Glamis North KOA

Oh yeah. We'll be planning some good stuff for all of the big weekends. I won't be out there for Thanksgiving, but will have a poker run in place for then too. Cal and I decided to make the poker runs gps/geocache based. The people who have done them absolutely love them, saying they added so much more to an already fun time. There are a bunch of new maps that you can get from the check in desk that'll make it easier for those not very familiar with the riding area or how to get to all of the sites that are out there.

Veterans Day weekend @ Glamis North KOA

Hello everybody! Made your camping and off-roading plans for Veterans Day weekend yet? If not, give the folks at the Glamis North KOA a call and reserve your spot right away.
For those who have not been there before, this is a full hook-up campground that caters to us off-roaders. Ride directly from your campsite. All pull through spaces are 120' long X 50' wide, with 30/50 amp electrical, and will accommodate 2 rigs on one site. The back in spaces near the newly finished pools are 120' long X 30' wide. There are 14 hot tubs/soaking tubs and 4 swimming pools, including 2 "flow through" mineral water pools, the only ones in California. These pools are completely chemical free(no acid or chlorine, or salt), artesian well fed so they continually turn over with fresh water throughout the day, and have no sulphur or odors. Don't feel like cooking after a long day of riding? No problem. Head up to Sassy's restaurant and enjoy a hot meal and a cold beer or wine.
I have put together a long geocache based Poker Run for Saturday that everyone will enjoy. We did this poker run over the Halloween weekend and it was a big hit with all those who took part. Bring your bikes, quads, buggys/rails, Jeeps and come out for a long weekend of desert riding fun and exploring places such as the Oasis, Bat Caves, Pinnacles, the old Miners Cabin, Hotel California, Salvation Mountain, or make the drive up the Red Canyon Trail to Chiriaco Summit for breakfast. If you also want the Glamis sand, Mammoth Wash is a short drive south from your base here at the KOA. Don't forget to bring your GPS! If you are a geocacher, there are loads of caches to be found out here.
For those who are going to ask, no, I do not work for them. I am just an enthusiast who along with my family enjoys all that is offered at the Glamis North KOA. We've been coming here since it first opened in 2008, and I just want others to check it out as well. If you do come out here, be sure to stop by space 113 and say hi and we'll share a cold one and I'll help you out with some great places to see out here.

RE: Halloween at the Glamis North KOA

We will be there all season as well-
Same spot as last year.
Scott- Happy to help with something- Have you got prizes lined up?
On the longer ride you could also enlist the help of someone at the restaurant/gas station at Chiriaco Summit to hand out a card- if you are going to make it that far...
I appreciate your help. I'm working on getting some cool prize donations and Cal has some prize offerings as well. If you've got any ideas let us know. Chiriaco was a destination that will most likely be chosen, along with stops at Hotel California and possibly the Miner's Cabin. We'll be a little farther down towards spot 113 this time. I've got a couple families of KOA noobs coming too. You'll be in that corner spot across from the kiddie track, space 90?

Halloween at the Glamis North KOA

Ok everybody, it's time to get your reservations in and joing us and our hosts Cal and Rosalyn for Halloween weekend, 10/28-10/30/2011, and join us for some great fun at the Glamis North KOA. This will be a really fun filled weekend for all who dare to show up. Activities will include a scary Spook House; site to site Trick-or-Treating for the kids(bring your costumes and plenty of candy to hand out!); Costume Contests for both kids and adults; Pedal Kart Races on Snob Hill; and two Poker Runs that I am organizing with Cal. One will be a shorter, young rider friendly ride for the whole family, and one will be a much longer day ride for the sand rails, buggys, utvs, atvs who desire a longer ride and have longer fuel range. There will be some great, exciting prizes for the winners and the runner-up's. The brand new pools and hot tubs will be ready to soothe your aches and relax you after your rides, and Sassy's restaurant will be ready to serve up a hot meal after a long, fun filled day of adventure. Spaces are still available but filling up fast! Let's make this a sell out weekend! If there is anybody coming this weekend who would be willing to assist with some of the events (handing out Poker Run cards at the various checkpoints, helping at the Pedal Kart races, judging the costume contests, etc.) please email me at scott@theericksons.us. Can't wait to see everyone out there! If you haven't been there before or checked out their site, do so now. Glamis North KOA

RE: Sand Sport Super show

Riverside PD showing off their KTM, intimidation at it's best.
If you were intimidated by the Riverside County Sheriff displaying their side by side and some enduro bikes along with giving out free maps of riding areas in the county, the BLM display must have scared the h3ll out of you! Doing most of our desert trips in Riv. Co., we have dealt with them several times. Always courteous, friendly, and willing to help out, never intimidating unlike the Imperial County professional a-holes at Glamis.

RE: Anyone camp in Johnson Valley?

Been riding all my life. There's no way that I'm not going to do what I can, then b*tch about it when riding areas get closed down. I hate people like that! This affects every one of us.

RE: Anyone camp in Johnson Valley?

Yeah, like they need another 186000 acres of desert to blow******up! They've already got so much unused desert land that is restricted, it makes no sense that they need more.

RE: Anyone camp in Johnson Valley?

Wow, thanks guys! Great input. We're going to be taking our dual sport rail out there along with our Rhino, so fuel capacity shouldn't be a problem as far as range goes. I'll probably take extra gas on longer trips. Plan on doing tons of geocashing and lots of exploring, checking out the petroglyphs. I wasn't sure what would be recommended as the best roads to get there or the best places to camp. I saw the Cougar Buttes in an article in Sand Sport mag.

Anyone camp in Johnson Valley?

Wondering if anyone here regularly camps and rides in Johnson Valley? What's the easiest way to get there, and what's everybody's favorite camping areas? I'm looking at heading there when the heat ends and camping near the Cougar Bluffs area.

RE: My New Ca. Registration form shows Unladen/G/CGW @ 26,000

Is your truck a pickup or a cab/chassis truck?
If it is a pickup, the registration is based on the actual unloaded scale weight of the truck, which should be somewhere between 7500-8500 lbs, depending on cab size, engine type, what all other options or equipment you have mounted on the truck, etc.
I have had to take trucks to a certified scale and bring the DMV a certified scale receipt showing the weight of the truck for registration purposes. They can also use the original manufacturer bill of lading for the truck when it was shipped to the dealer, if you have that info to give them.
Looks like what they did on your truck was treat it as a commercial cab/chassis truck and make you declare a combined vehicle weight, which is the max you would ever expect your loaded truck plus loaded trailer to weigh together as a unit. They base the commercial truck registration on that declared weight.
Under this type of commercial vehicle registration, they issue you a CA DMV commercial registration number, a US DOT commercial registration number, and a weight sticker. All 3 numbers must be displayed on the outside of the vehicle. The weight sticker displays the first 2 digits of the registered weight. So if you were registered for 20,000 lbs, the weight sticker will say '20' on it. It is a large, colored, square sticker that can't be missed at quick glance of vehicle as it goes by on the scale at the checkpoint.
That type of commercial registration does not apply to pickups, only to commercial trucks over 15K GVWR with a work body mounted to the truck (flatbed, stakebed, utility service bed, box body, crane, etc). Personal use pickups don't fall under that category. If your truck was an F450/550 cab/chassis truck with a flatbed on it, it would have that kind of commercial registration where you declare the combined weight. Pickups do not declare the combined weight.
An addition to this and a correction. Not applicable to pickup trucks, but at 26001# a commercial Class B drivers license would also be required, and you would then be required to file a 2290 and pay in advance the annual federal Heavy Highway Use Tax(HHUT). For California, only a CA number and HHUT is required. A US DOT number is not required unless the commercial vehicle is operated interstate.
