RE: 5th wheels with these requirements

In ALberta a lot of people on rigs use Artic Fox. It has the winter package. Downside is I dont think they are in production any more. Maybe more people have more info on Artic Fox.
Last I heard Northwood Manufacturing is going stronger than ever. Our local dealer has some new ones on his lot.

RE: Fuel Price Gouging

Speaking of gouging...Regular is still $4.40 here in WA two miles from the Canadian border (currently the highest in the state according to morning news).

RE: Buying else where

We bought from a dealer 2400 miles away. The long distance purchase worked out for us (knock on wood) and we have had no issues with service to date. Considering the amount of money we saved with this purchase compared to local (we tried), it would have seemed foolish to purchase local.
Don't forget all the vended ammenities (refridgerator, stove, fireplace, whatever) come with their own warranty and it has been my experience most any dealer with the same products will gladly do that warranty work.
Best Wishes!

RE: what type of caulking

I have used Dicor and ProFlex and both are excellent products but with my limited DIY skills, found them very difficult to work with. I just spent several weeks researching sealants just for fun. Even talked to a couple of RV manufactureres about sealants. The one thing that remained consistent was the recommendation of a urethane/polyurethane product not a silicone.
In my search I found some products made by Tremco. The sealants are called Trempro. I decided to try the Trempro 626. I selected it for several reasons including its use for continuous immersion in water (I live in the Pacific Northwet)and because it comes in several colors. I am in the process of resealing my entire rig...its about half done.
The upside is the sealant is very easy to work, color matches our rig, and it is relatively inexpensive for a quality sealant ($7.95) at Fastenal Stores. The downside is it takes forever to dry and is not readily available...could only find at Fastenal stores and they had to order it. It is a textured sealant meaning when dry it looks similar to brick mortor rather than a smooth sheen like silicone. Doesn't bother me or look bad on the rig.
Just throwing it out as an option!
Best Wishes!

RE: Jacking up 5er

OK...I understand that I should jack from the frame per Lippert recommendations but...if I am changing a tire and only lifting the axle with TrailAir Equa-Flex high enough to do so, could I weld one of these (see photo) to the bottle jack and reduce the chance of causing any axle damage?
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l10/heritage93/3201_st.jpg
Can't see pictures on photobucket here at work -- they have it blocked. My fiver is underslung, so the axle tube is above the springs. There is a nice flat plate under the spring that the u-bolts go through. It is called the tie plate, and I can just put the bottle jack under there. On my TT, it is overslung. This means my springs are above the axle tube. So I made an adapter for my bottle jack. I took a pipe nipple that would slip over the top of my bottle jack and welded it to a "spring perch" that was for my axle diameter. Here is a link to the "spring perch":
http://www.easternmarine.com/2-3-8-round-axle-steel-leaf-spring-seat-ss-200
You will note the correct term is "spring seat". When you look at your axle, there is already one of these welded to it.
Brilliant!
Lyle
If you go back a few posts you will see the pictures of my axle. There is one on the top of the axle where the leaf spring sits but no where to jack as far as I can tell. What am I missing?

Thanks David...actually the picture is a "spring seat" from East Marine only a 3" version. I think that is what I need for 7000lb axles. Welding the pipe to the seat would save welding it directly to the jack. I might try that. Seems like jacking that way should not be such an issue. I am being lazy as I just don't want to carry all the 4x4 cribbing everytime I travel. This would be much easier if it doesn't create any damage.

RE: Cleaning Black Tank

Difficult to give specifics on your rig but I can share what I have experienced with others. The tank flush system has a similar hook-up to the fresh water in that you connect the "gray hose" to the outlet and turn on the water to start the cleaning. In the rigs I have seen with two black tanks, the wash only cleans one of the tanks, usually the bigger of the two. When I first tried ours, it did not work well...I discovered a check valve had been installed backwards and wouldn't allow water into the flush. This is not an uncommon issue. I still like the Flush King and continue to use it.
Good Luck!

RE: Heartland Augusta

Heartland does seem to take care of their customers unless they cause trouble on their forums by complaining, justified or not, too much. Everyone likes to stick up for what ever brand they purchase but the folks at Heartland seems to go over-board to a point to ridicule members that don't tow the line.
Wow...I have been with that forum daily since Nov of 09 (before I became an owner) and never really noticed the ridicule element you elude to. I have read posts from "enthusiastic" owners as I do on most all forums but nothing I would consider "over-board." I am sorry you got that impression as I think most members are sincere in offering their help and experience in a positive way.
Best Wishes with your new DRV. They are very nice rigs!

RE: Heartland Augusta

Our Heartland Augusta fifth wheel(new 2010) leaked rain (a lot!)the first trip, the air bed deflated with sleepers. Air bag was finally replaced, that one went down also. Water leak was fixed under warranty, took a while. We have had it less than 2 years, and have never taken a trip that it did not have some issue, including a warm refrigerator, spoiled food. Stay tuned, it may get better. I am compelled to save someone looking to spend $90,000 our experience.
First and foremost, I am sorry you are having issues with your Landmark. No one should spend that much money and not be elated with the product.
That being said, I can't help but have some queries with some of the expressed concerns.
The mattress leak is an issue with, I believe, Flair Interiors as the manufacturer for most of the air beds. There was a problem with some sofas pinching the mattress resulting in a hole. Later models hold the mattress in a pouch on the back rather than being folded inside the sofa itself. Flair has been excellent about helping those with defective air beds. By your comments I read the mattress was replaced once but failed again. Do you have a pouch model or the older style? Ours has worked quite well. Perhaps there is a way to eliminate the problem. If you have a Flair Sofa bed, give them a call and see what can be done. ((574) 534-2163)
Any water leak is a serious problem and needs to be dealt with. Most rigs do not leak but some do. We had a previous SOB with a bad leak in a slide roof that ruined the entire slide before we discovered it. I read Heartland approved your warranty repair and a dealer fixed the leak. If, however, it took an unusual amount of time for the fix to occur could this have been a dealer issue rather than Heartlands?
Heartland uses mostly Dometic refrigerators in their units. There have been some problems in several different RV brands with the cooling fans in the newer Dometic refrigerators, often with those mounted in a kitchen slide. Owners have had this fixed on their Heartland and/or Dometic (800-544-4881)warranty and experienced no further problems. Some even have a DIY fix you can find on the internet. One should not need to make such repairs in a new rig but appliances also fail Unfortunate for sure but again, a vendor issue in my opinion.
It is not my intent to discount your concerns. I have been on your side of the fence with other major purchases so I understand the disappointment and frustration. The Landmark is a very fine coach. Hopefully these issues will be resolved and you can move ahead to enjoy your Augusta.
Best Wishes!

RE: Black Tank Flush Ques

Also sounds more like a Winterizing connection for antifreeze to me. Most tank flush systems I have seen do not have a hose but a connector much like the city water connection.

RE: caulking on a new trailer

My 2011 is still under warranty. Do you think caulking is an item that warranty would cover? I never thought of trying warranty. I guess I could place a call to the factory and ask. Thanks for the tip.
Sure wouldn't hurt to ask!
