RE: Sanitizing fresh water system in the 5er

My reason for diluting the bleach before adding to tank is that a little spill of diluted bleach will not ruin my clothes. A drop of spilled pure bleach would make a permanent spot. I also use 1/4 cup per 15 gallons water. After draining bleach, I add a cup of distilled vinegar to neutralize the bleach then fill tank with water. run all water taps until vinegar appears. (Water will foam a little.) Drain tank and refill with pure water.

RE: battery disconnect switch

Don't turn the battery disconnect switch to off while plugged in. When your battery is fully charged you can unplug for a month - that's when you want the disconnect set to off. Your water lines should not freeze if the temp is in the high 20s for a few hours. If you happen to be in a place where your are worried, then you can run the heater with the thermostat set to 55 or 60. Or plug in a portable electric heater overnight.

RE: NYC Tours

Suggest camp at Liberty Harbor (Jersey City) and take cab to wherever tour starts in Manhattan. There may be NYC tours from Jersey City or nearby Hoboken - I have never tried to check on it. Using PATH from Liberty Harbor involves about a quarter mile walk to New Jersey Light Transit station, then another eighth mile walk to PATH station, then a short walk up street level in Manhattan.

RE: Tailgater Dish Connection

Not sure about the switch, but it sounds like it should work. My Tailgater will not work if I try to run the signal through my video distribution center. I run the "from cable" coax directly into the 211 receiver. Output from the 211 is sent to main tv via RGB component cables. (Added 11:33am) So the video distribution center is out of the loop. I probably won't use cable anymore, but if I did then I would manually plug the "from cable" coax back into the video distribution center. May your switch idea would take care of that business.

RE: New at this

Since you say that you have not pulled anything a large as this 35 ft. fiver, I will offer some very elementary advice on pulling. Keep extra distance between you and the next car because you need more room to stop. I like to be at least five seconds behind. Naturally, four wheelers will pass and pull in right in front of you, but keep your cool and back off if you need to. Next, I don't like to drive over 60 mph because fuel economy gets bad at higher speeds: that fiver creates a lot of wind resistance. Next, you know of course to swing wide on turns. The advice is to take it slow on turns and watch your mirrors. If it looks like you are going to hit a curb then stop. Hitting curbs is hard on trailer tires.

RE: Hitting the 5th wheel hard hooking up.

I'm in the "as easy as you can" school of hooking up. Before unhooking, I like to extend the landing gear (front jacks) so as to raise the pin about an inch in order to take a lot of the weight off of the truck springs. When I pull away, the truck springs don't "rebound" by much. The next time I hook up, It takes very little force since the pin (plate?) will be only little lower than the hitch surface.

RE: in bed aux fuel tanks

gmcsmoke's right. Put your truck with fiver attached and full fuel tank on a CAT scale to get axle weights. Subtract from the Gross rear axle weight limit and subtract another couple of hundred pounds for good measure: firewood, whatever. Now you can see whether an aux tank would be possible. Transfer Flow tanks start at 30 gallons; I guess that would be about 250 pounds, fuel plus tank. Even 30 extra gallons would allow a full day's drive without having to refuel.

RE: Camping World on verge of explosive growth - Part 2

x2 on Good Sam magazine. I no longer look at it. It was never good for much before the "expansion", but I would look at the tech topics. Camping World has just taken over the service department of the RV dealer that I had built such a good relationship with. Now I have to go search for an honest and reliable service department

RE: TST tire pressure monitor: is "repeater" needed?

My trailer is 36' long; and, I have both an in-bed fuel tank and an aluminum roll-top bed cover that is pulled 1/3 closed while pulling the fiver. I just bought a repeater ($59) for our TST system because the signal(s) keep dropping out. I haven't installed it, yet; but, I hope it will solve our problems. We are using the longest antenna that came with the system. Again, thanks for the feedback, everyone. I also have a in-bed fuel tank. Could that be blocking signals from sensors on the fifth wheel? I had not thought about that possibility. I think that I will mention the in-bed fuel tank to folks at TST when I order. They may have a suggestion about where to position the antenna.

OK, that's good to hear. Thank you for the feedback!!

TST tire pressure monitor: is "repeater" needed?

I'm about to replace my nVision tire pressure monitor system with the TST system. Fifth-wheel is about 30 feet in length. My nVision system needed a "repeater" (cost: $100) in the fiver to boost the weak signal from the trailer-tire sensors. I looked at the TST web site and didn't see anything about a repeater, but maybe I missed it. Question: If you have a TST system and a fiver or travel trailer of 30 feet or longer, is your TST monitor able to read your trailer-tire sensors without use of a signal booster in the trailer?

RE: Water Accessory Storage

My fifth wheel has no bumper, so I have a large plastic container for sewer hose and a small plastic container for fresh water stuff. In the container with the sewer hose I have other dirty things such as wheel chocks.

RE: Fuel Capacity

Suggest Transfer Flow in-bed tank. They come in sizes from 37 gallons to 98 gallons. You have plenty of room in the bed; weight would be the limiting factor. Tank plus 37 gallons is about 300 pounds; tank plus 98 gallons is about 700 pounds. I have the 98 gallon, and can tow for two full days without worrying about fuel.

RE: Any good Margarita recipies?

For two Magaritas, I mix 4 ounces tequila, 1 ounce triple sec, a dash of Roses's lime juice. Shake well with ice. My wife wants the rim of her glass covered with a thick layer of salt (I use coarse-grain or Kosher salt), I like just a little on the glass.

RE: Who make the best replacement large capictiy fuel tank??

Transfer Flow in-bed tanks come in 37, 50, 70, and 98 gallon sizes. (I've got the 98 gallon tank in a F350 longbed). I recommend getting the digital fuel gauge along with it. Tanks are for gasoline or diesel. Just google Transfer Flow. There are authorized installers around the country. (I drove to Dallas, Texas, to get mine installed, but I just planned a trip in that direction.) To find one in your area, I would telephone Transfer Flow for a recommendation. You want an installer with a lot of experience.

RE: New Mexico?

Carlsbad KOA (which is north of Carslbad, near Atoka) is an RV park with a few cabins. We were there last November, so they should be open.

RE: Death Valley gas prices

Last time we went through, we thought that we would save by filling tank outside the park. I think it was at Shoshone. Well, that turned out to be more expensive than prices inside the park. Can't win for losing.

RE: whats the best Bang for the Buck RV gas mileage wise?

On tent trailers -- we used a Starcraft tent trailer for 10 years before switching to 5-th wheel. There will be a problem with the dogs -- you won't be able to leave them in the trailer because (1) anyone with a pocket knife can get inside and take them, and (2) a dog left inside can tear through the screening in one second and escape. (Our rat terrier did just that after seeing a squirrel, which is why we didn't take her on long trips.) With a pet, I would want something hard-sided.

RE: Jacking up trailer for flat tire

Everyone else seems to prefer hydraulic jacks, but I like to use the jack from my Ford F350 truck. It has a long crank that I can use without having to lie down on the ground. It raises my fifth-wheel axle without much effort. And it has a U-shaped top which securely holds the axle. (With a hydraulic jack, I worry about the axle slipping off the flat top of the jack's piston.)

RE: I-40 In Oklahoma

The rough part is the eastern half. They are working on it -- maybe it will be all ok in a few more years. For now, I recommend I-40 westward from Oklahoma City.
