RE: RMP/ZEP The final word :)

First of all, it does not work. So for all the naysayers, you are right. Secondly, it does work, so for all the proponents, you are right.
So here is the deal. I just tried to RPM/ZEP my fiberglass Gelcoated boat. It does nothing to effect the oxidation/discoloration. Zero, Zip, nada. It never will. The only way to correct, or get rid of oxidation is by a lot of sanding and buffing. No amount of cleaning or chemicals will have any real effect on the oxidation. The only way to get rid of it, is to sand down to a fresh unoxidized surface. You can pretend all you want, but that's the facts.
So why all the rave reviews? Basically what is happening is that oxidation is primarily white. If you are working with white gelcoat that has oxidized, it has oxidized to the nearly the same color as the original white gelcoat. Therefore, if you coat the surface with something that will make it shiny, what you are actually doing is shining the oxidation. It doesn't cover it, mask it, or change it, it just makes it shiny. So really the end result is that it is difficult to see the difference between shiny fiberglass gelcoat, and shiny oxidized gelcoat, because both surfaces are white and both surfaces are shiny.
So what is the conclusion? If you are working with a white or fairly light colored surface, you can cheat the system and make oxidation shiny. All well and good, and worthwhile. BUT here is the warning. If you are dealing with a dark surface that is oxidized, making the oxidation shiny means that now you have faded, light grey colored ares that are shiny. It does not make those grayish white oxidized areas dark again like the original color. If you have a dark color that has turned light grey, do not waste your time covering it with RMP/ZEP. Because that is exactly what you are doing, you are wasting your time. Not only that, but then you have to strip it all back off again, and then do the actual work of sanding, polishing, and buffing. Once you have sanded all the oxidation off, then it may be worthwhile to put a final coat of RMP/ZEP on it, as the product does shine. But if you are starting with an oxidized dark color, you have to do the hard work.
I just re-did a dark blue boat that was heavily oxidized. I made the mistake of thinking I could play the game, clean it, and coat it with ZEP. I ended up having to strip the ZEP back off, go back and wet sand the surface, and rub it out. When I was all done, I did end up recoating it with ZEP, so the end result looks good, but it took me a lot longer to get there and required a ton of sanding. Hopefully this information will save someone some time. Its not that hard to strip it off when you've discovered it doesn't work on dark colors, but it but it wasted one of my weekends - mainly because I put on about 5 coats, hoping that it would eventually darken up. (like what you see when the surface is wet). Incidentally the top white part of the boat looks good.
I plan to do the motorhome next. Because it is a light color, I believe it will work just fine, without having to do any sanding.
Which is why almost every thread stresses PREPARATION !! Wash with something like Dawn to cut all the grease etc., then use Bar Keepers friend to remove the oxidation ( it does work.) then apply the RMP/ZEP
Trust me it's woth the effort.

Is that a Dometic 310 and did you need an adapter kit to go from 4 bolts to 2 bolts?

Does this work for you:
Dometic 310 installation
From what I understand the 310 uses a standard home seat.

RE: Lincoln museum/library

There's an open lot (next to a parking garage for RV) about 2 blocks away from the museum. Don't remember the fee but you pay at the garage.
You really need the better part of a day to see everything in the museum.
Actually, the parking lot is 1.5 blocks north of museum entrance on 6th st.
212 N Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701,Lincoln Presidential Museum
Zoom in on the map in Google maps and you'll see the RV's parked there.

RE: Naperville, IL

Hollywood Casino in Joliet has an RV resort open year round $12/night right now with no water.
Hollywood Casino
Probably 30 minutes from Naperville, depending on where you want to be in Naperville.

RE: Towing a Jeep Wrangler

I just don't understand how you can pull a vehicle with the transmission in Park. Yes, I read this thread several times.
Because the transfer case is in neutral and the drive shafts are basically disconnected.

RE: New Computer

So if I can sum up the advice so far:
Based on the OP's requirement: "I pay bills, spend too much time on RV.Net, download picture, use MS Word and Works and general web browing. No games, movies or such.
"
This forum recommends either:
a) the latest, fastest processor available with maximum memory and disk space
or b) an Apple product due to ultra light weight and no problems (although all of those posts about the Great Apple Support do make me wonder how great it is if y'all need so much support :W )
or c) something from a model just being replaced because it provides a good bang for the buck based on the stated need
or d) because the one I have {insert favorite PC brand/size/price/ here} is the best.
Tough call, I wish the OP luck in sorting this out! :B
Dave
Or consider a refurbished unit off ebay. Since OP isn't doing games, movies, etc, a good refurb business model would work well

Also look at Lenovo Thinkpad/Thinkpad Edge laptops on Lenovo site. Laptops have motion detection system which parks HDD if it senses it's falling/being dropped.

RE: FMCA Menbership

The free medical services, driving RV to your home, transporting you home in a medical emergency is more than worth the membership fee.
Since DW does not drive MH these services are essential should anything happen to me.

RE: Travel channel RV show

I did a little more poking around after seeing the show and their blog. There's a Monaco newsletter that also talks about them. Supposedly they started with a VW camper, then had a 31' Class A before going to the Vesta. Personally I would've looked at some used units or gone with the Winnie.
In reading the blog, they're averaging about 10.9 mpg.

No question it is I 86 from PA/NY line east. You're lucky to be able to maintain 35 mph. You'll lose every filling you have.!!!

RE: GPS - Replacement time --- Decision, Decision

Used to have Garmin's, but when my last one bit the dust went looking for another unit. Stumbled on a TomTom XXL550TM that has free lifetime maps and traffic and 5" screen for an unbeatable price. Have come to really love it. Can modify my menus, and have the capability to make real time map corrections that get uploaded to TomTom site and passed on to everyone else.

RE: winnebago vectra

Just checked Winnebago site and looked at both 95 & 96 Vectra. 95 35RQ-P shows an Oshkosh option, but 96 doesn't.
Looks like it has multiple tanks but they only show total capacity.

RE: Home phone number

Until you need 911.. cell phones don't give emergency personnel an exact location.
Cell phones do tell them where you are ... they use gps location by triangulation of cell towers..
The gov can track you any time they want with your cell phone
Putz
True, but there must be a reason every dispatcher I know will NOT be without a land line at home.

Granted they don't in a MH either, but if you're in the sticks and mortar it's nice to know they can find you even if you can't talk to them.

RE: CB Radio

I keep my CB in the garage, where my family won't be exposed to the filthy mouths of truckers who feel m@%rF^3*# has to be every other spoken word. RVers don't use Ch16, that leaves Ch19 and its language. My advice: get a good radar/laser detecter, a reliable GPS (beware relying on GPS directions), and a good sound system.
BTW - I was in the Navy for 21 years, and I've heard it all. I just don't need to hear it anymore. HTH.
Except that none of the above will alert you to the accident that just happened 2 miles ahead of you, a CB will.
