Moose and Bear in British Columbia on the Alaska Hwy

We left Dawson Creek and headed northwest. I took an unexpected snooze and awakened to Chuck excitedly yelling "Camera!" He slowed the RV down to a crawl. I grabbed the camera, turned it on, prepared the shot. The moose stood at the top of a small rise, looking at us quizzically. My finger started going down on the camera's trigger.
BOOM!!!! Boomer jumps on me excitedly barking loudly, warning of an approaching disaster. The moose is startled, afraid of the barking RV. It retreats to the forest.
I recover the camera and snap a quick shot. My beautiful moose shot. It seems I am to start a collection of animal butt pictures. (You can see this incredible shot in our blog).
Chuck said while I was napping a black bear ambled along the edge of the forest searching for food.
Animals are alive and well in British Columbia.

RE: Dawson Creek - favorite restaurants?

Ah, too late. We went out sight-seeing and grocery shopping and went to Browns Social House. It was good - a small Canadian Chain. The menu features signature dishes from various regions - Thai, Indian, Chinese, Seafood, Steaks, Pasta, Hamburgers, and the like. Chuck had a Chicken Teriyaki bowl which was delightful and I feasted on Fish and Chips. We had a calamari appetizer - done just right with two spicy dipping sauces.

Dawson Creek - favorite restaurants?

We plan on an afternoon of sight seeing Dawson Creek and dinner out.
Any recommendations on good not-to-be-missed restaurants?

RE: Ugly Encounter at Campground

Why on earth would one think that not crossing someones site has to be in the campgrounds rules? When I go in and PAY, I am PAYING for hookups and the SITE. I have the rights to the site as long as I am there. Not someone else.
Would you like it if folks went through your house and yard at all hours of the day and night? I think not. Would you do that to your neighbors at home? If you do, then I pity your neighbors.
Methinks there are way too many folk in the US that have no clue as to common sense, common courtesy, and the law of the land. In the old west they would probably have been "outlaws" and shot out of hand....ahh the good old days. just kidding!

Ah,
There are many ways to be rich. Not all of them include money.
We are rich in experience. Rich in friends. Very rich in the love of our dogs.

RE: Sometimes financing makes sense

That is a good analysis and I totally agree with you. In addition to our 401K and IRA accounts, we have 3 after-tax savings accounts. For our coach, we used our after tax savings. No way would I take from the retirement accounts. We don't want to touch those until we hit 70.5 if we can. If we hadn't saved so diligently for a coach, we would have done the finance thing.

RE: Please....Tell me where to go!

If you have many months, drive up to Niagara Falls, cross into Canada, go to Nova Scotia and be a tourist for a month or two. Then drive down to Maine and see the east coast. Don't miss Boston, Washington DC, Williamsburg, Yorktown. Then there is Chincoteague Island with the wild horses.

RE: Crossing into Canada and saving the Vegetables

Pet Food is strange. The web site says none with beef by products. I think that is a leftover from the mad cow scare.
We've been through the border with the dogs twice now. They have asked about their records (I just showed the documents in my hand. They never looked at them)
They have never asked about dogfood.
Coming back into the states may be different. I've read posts where the US has confiscated the dogfood.

RE: Applying for social security

Dick is right on. SS needs an address to send your statements to and sometimes your initial check. So, if that is your mail forwarding, the answer should be yes and you are ok.

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
Ingredients:
1 onion
4 carrots
2 Zucchini
1/2 bunch of celery
5-7 cloves of garlic
Olive Oil
Sodium Free Chicken Bouillon
13 oz can Chunk Chicken Breast
Farfalle (BowTie Pasta)
8 cups water
1 tsp of salt
1 tablespoon of ginger, cayenne or red pepper, thyme, black pepper
2-3 tablespoons of parsley
Chop Dice the following:
1 onion
4 carrots
2 Zucchini
1/2 bunch of celery
5-7 cloves of garlic
Cover (lightly) the bottom of your pot (I used electric kettle) with olive oil and Sautee the veggies.
Add 4-5 packages of sodium-free chicken bouillon and stir. Add about a cup of water and stir. Let simmer 3-5 minutes.
Add 1 13 oz can of chunk Chicken Breast in water (98% fat free). Break apart the chicken chunks with a spoon.
Add 8 cups of water and about 4 cups of Farfalle (bow-tie) pasta. Add more water as needed.
Add your spices and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Adjust spices to taste, serve hot.
There's a pic of the soup in our blog.

RE: Nova Scotia in July

We were in the maritimes last summer and made reservations a few days to weeks prior to arrival. We found it wasn't really necessary - with the caveat that we took the road less traveled.
If you are like us and enjoy being flexible on our itinerary and lengths of stay, a few days before arrival should be sufficient in most cases.

RE: Anyone taken Hwy 22 from Cochrane to Entwhistle (PH16)??

Thanks Don! We are looking at an overnight stop in Drayton. I read there is a diesel fuel shortage there, due to a temporary plant shutdown? Are you familiar with this?
OK - nevermind. That was an old newspaper report from a while back.

RE: Arrrrrrrrrrrrg! Part II

Diann,
This sounds so familiar!! Heading up to Canada we too had engine problems and car problems that delayed our trip. As Sue said, we were so thankful it happened in the states and not in Alaska or a remote road in Canada.
I am especially thankful that you were alert to the groaning noise. That condition with the tire could cause a fire and destroy your MH.
You and your DH should be congratulating each other on doing such a wonderful job of monitoring your coach. Time to break out a bottle of champagne and enjoy the weekend.
Love Abby. Our Brittany (Boomer) might get a crush on her if we happen to meet up sometime.
on edit: You know those puffs of smoke going uphill? That can be caused by being low on fuel (a quarter tank or less). Happened to us, we filled up the tank and everything was a-ok.

RE: Anyone taken Hwy 22 from Cochrane to Entwhistle (PH16)??

We spent the last three days doing a tour of Banff, Lake Louise, and the Icefields Parkway and have no need to go that way again. I agree it was gorgeous. We liked being able to enjoy the scenery without the responsibility of distracted driving.
JN_B- You mention traffic. I am guessing that is commute traffic? Or is it heavy all day? When we've traveled about a 30 mile stretch back and forth on 22 near Cochrane during non-commute hours traffic has been fairly light. We would probably be driving between 10-3.
