RE: Another WWII Vet is gone

My condolences to you and his entire family. I've known several veterans of Viet Nam and a few from WWII. Most never talk about their experiences, or think of themselves as heroes - but they are.
When you do find one that talks a lot about his experiences chances are that he is what we call a player. Chances are he didn't see any real action. I've had the opportunity to call BS several times. I never do unless they really cross the line.
He was a real hero and you and your family can be proud of him.

RE: First Tw Chevy 2500HD Gas

I made my first tow with my 2011 6.0 yesterday. I had to pull in a 35 to 40 MPH wind. I had all the power I needed but she sure sucked gas. I pulled the same 5er with a 2002 6.0 and got along great. I traded a costly F-250 6.0 powerstroke for this one. She had more power but at a cost. I'm anxious to pull in more favorable conditions to see how she actually does. I'll be happy with 8 to 10 MPG.

RE: Dental work @ Rio Dental in Juarez, Mex

I had some dental work done in Progresso. My dentist wanted over $1200 for what I got done for $340 in Mexico. I'm very satisfied. Of course my American dentist wasn't too happy. While I was there i picked up some medication that cost $240 for a thirty day supply in the U.S. for $14.95 for a one hundred day supply. Very quiet in Progresso.

RE: Portable Ovens

I use my camper oven for storage and carry a medium size toaster oven under the bed. I bake everything from pies to cakes to bread. Occasionally a roast or chicken will go in though I prefer to cook those over a fire. I usually set it up under the fifth wheel to protect it from rain and watch the neighbors when the fresh baked aromas start hitting the air. Ours is not an expensive one. Manual timer and temp control though it is convection. That is what I'm use to at home.

RE: Homemade wine...cheap, easy and not too darn bad!

I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman around the same time period. We actually had 5 gallon cans of 190 proof grain alchohol. We denatured it to make rubbing alchohol because it was cheaper than just buying rubbing alchohol. Since it was a controlled substance, it had to be accounted for, but sometimes a quart or so of the good stuff would "spill". Mixed with grape juice, it wasn't bad, but if you were using a paper cup, you had to drink fast before it ate thru the cup. :)
I had a similar experience with "Doc" Graham, our corpsman. I could get the lemons for the mix and he furnished the booze. It would in fact melt the wax on the paper cup.

RE: Homemade wine...cheap, easy and not too darn bad!

I became a wine expert of sorts 40 years ago when I was in the Navy. We spent long periods at sea and between the bitter military grape juice, sufficient sugar, and a little yeast we made wine . Fermented in gallon jugs from the soda fountain for a couple of weeks. We drank one gallon a day and made one gallon a day. A lot better than the stuff they made in the engine room out of potato peeling mash.

RE: Am I the only one who thinks about ...

I think about it and would love to but too many things going on this summer. I haven't even opened my 5th wheel up or put the hitch in the p/u yet. My wife isn't as enthusiastic as I am. I could live in the camper all summer if it wasn't for everything else going on.

RE: Broadband2Go

I have virgin mobile wifi.Got it at wally world for $147,unlimited plan for me is $40/month (had it for last 3 years)and it works from FL to Cali to WI and PA.Actually works where my at&t phone will not.
It does not work well in South Texas. I thought that was the answer last year. Though the coverage map said I was in a good coverage area it seldom worked and when it did it was very slow and with a weak signal. I had 14 days to return the hotspot to Best Buy. I did that on the 13th day and only had acceptable service for maybe one day.
I now use a Verizon hotspot via Galaxy Tab and it works great even though only a 3G signal. Works everywhere that I have been.

RE: Shop carefully...

If a web site doesn't show shipping costs up front I look someplace else. Always have to figure the shipping charges into final costs so you can compare prices.

RE: Credit Card...that's what I use...what about you ?

I carry very little cash and I use a debit card for most of my purchases. Since the interest rate on my checking account has dropped to less than 3% I've been looking for a credit card that will rebate me for purchases. 5% on gas purchases would be nice. So far no luck on offers that I get by mail. I will never carry a balance on credit card purchases.

RE: Something different, storm shelter with pics

I just bought a different house. It was built in 1984. A tornado basically destroyed our little town in 1968 so the builder had a storm shelter built into the basement. Not big but large enough for two of us to sit out a storm.

RE: NETZERO offering 4G Mobile Broadband service

Take a look at the Virgin Moble plan - only 3G but great for emails and casual interent us. No contract just pay for the months you need it. There Link
i started out using Virgin Mobile in the RGV last year and found that it was virtually useless even though i was right in the center of their coverage map. When it worked it was super slow and it didn't work that often. I had to set the hotspot outside on the porch rail to get any signal at all. Dumped it after a week and went with AT&T DSL. The internet service was faily good. I had the 6mbs package but usually ran around 4 mbs. Customer service was lousy.
This year I am using a Verizon hot spot. 3G slow but it works.

RE: desk top computer

I guess if it were mine I would open it up and remove and re-seat all memory and cards, such as video and sound. I've seen that happen. Easy to do and shines up the contacts. Also switch around power cords to hard drive ,etc.

RE: I'm saving money........

Just got mine cut in Progresso this morning. Four bucks. It's nearly as good as a $14 haircut. I won't know the difference in a week. I have often thought of letting mine grow but when it starts touching my ears and my scalp starts itching and my hair gets oily I decide it isn't worth it. I wash my hair daily but it just gets to the point where it doesn't feel clean.

RE: May leave RGV early

Here is a update. I was admitted to the hospital last Friday with chest pains and severe dehydration. Bummer. I sure don't feel comfortable heading north right now. Still plenty weak. If I feel better next week we may head that way but it won't be a quick trip. Lot's to do here yet to get ready.

May leave RGV early

A very good friend of mine who has Parkinson's disease and heart disease called me last night and wants us to accompany he and his wife on a trip to Hawaii. We had originally planned a Alaska cruise this year but I feel that I could help him in Hawaii as I am somewhat familiar with Oahu. This may be his last big trip as his health is steadily getting worse. We had also planned to go to Oahu later in the year to catch the whales. Our 40th anniversary is April 14 and he wants to leave the 9th so it would be nice to be in Hawaii for our anniversary. At his time my wife has mixed feelings but I would like to help him out, in fact as a veteran brother I feel obligated to help him out. Round trip tickets and lodging for a week would only be $2300 plus what we spend while there. Small price to pay to help a buddy.

RE: Slicing and dicing question

Remember the Vegamatic? I found one still in the box when we were clearing my mothers house after her death. My kids loved the thin potato slices and it made great french fries. Did take some strength to push the blades thru the potato though.
I have 2 of those Vegamatics. One new one still in the box and another that i use all of the time. I don't do fries but I sure like it to slice potatoes for Escaloped Potatoes and Ham. A good solid push will put a spud right through.
I find these at the thrift store. I even gave a new one to the daughter.

RE: Need to stop watching so much TV......

I didn't think I had a problem. I had a heart attack in 2002. I went to the VA to see about health care. During the screening process it was determined that I had PTSD. HUH?? I started counseling and came to realize that it most probably caused my divorce from my first wife and helped me realize why two of my kids want nothing to do with me. My present wife and I have been married for 40 years and I can guarantee you that she put up with a lot of stuff for a lot of years. I now try to do better and she is a lot happier. Part of the therapy is exposing myself to the things that always triggered me. I'm in a better position to deal with those things thanks to the VA and the help that they have provided for me.
My life was messed up and now because of the VA it's gotten a lot better. Take advantage of their services you earned it.

RE: Best Fried Chicken in the Valley

Because of bad weather the turnout was down. Served 1700 chicken dinners on one Sunday last month and over 1500 on the other Sunday. They only serve 2 Sundays a month. They also serve spaghetti on Wednesdays and fish on Fridays. Very active post. Of course that is only during Winter Texan season.
Only chain chicken down here are Church's and KFC. Church's puts out some pretty bad stuff and KFC isn't far behind. It may not be that bad in other places but that is my experience in the RGV.
