RE: Yellowstone or Grand Canyon

Between the two, I would also choose Yellowstone because of the diversity (wildlife, geysers, mudpots, canyons, etc.). BUT, since you will be in southwestern CO, you could drive on up to ARCHES N.P. & CANYONLANDS N.P. near MOAB. Then head for Yellowstone N.P. That way, you could save Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon National Parks and other great locations nearby for another great trip later. Have a great trip.

RE: Our first cross country rv trip

Already getting good advice on your request. We always use the NEXT EXIT and TRAILER LIFE CAMPGROUND DIRECTORY along with a Road Atlas on our trips. I usually travel 60-65 mph and stop every 2-3 hrs to take a short break for gas and/or food. We plan our route, make reservations at our destination if necessary, then choose campgrounds along the route at intermediate locations (reservation at Colorado destination and overnite stops along the way in Texas,New Mexico etc.) As we travel, we decide each day how much further we want to drive and call ahead to make reservations. Try to stop late afternoon so we can enjoy the evenings. Also avoid AM and PM traffic in Metro areas if all possible. Draw up your itinerary of the places you wish to visit, how long you want to stay, the distances between each destination and then choose campgrounds accordingly. It will take several days to travel out West and several days for the return trip. Good trip planning and adequate time to enjoy each destination (Grand Canyon, Yellowstone etc.) will make the trip worthwhile. Trying to drive too far and not taking the time necessary to enjoy each destination makes for a bad trip. There are many locations worth visiting out WEST. You will have to save some for another trip; so take the time to enjoy. Yellowstone N.P. will take a minimum of 3-4 days just to "get your feet wet." A week or longer would be much better. Other locations will take less time to see. Good luck on your trip planning and have a great trip.

Replacing tires on our RV

Purchased our 5er exactly 5 yrs ago. Have only used it on 17 trips and have approximately 9,000 miles on the tires. Have read previous posts suggesting replacing tires every 3-5 years regardless of their appearance. Other posts mention owners driving 4 to 5 years or longer with no tire problems. We have had no tire issues at all (Mission Radial ST 225/75 R15 tires) and I drive 65 mph or less. Would like advice from veteran RVers & knowledgeable tire folks. Already have a summer trip planned and hope to get away later this Spring for at least a short trip. Thanks in advance.

Destin, Fl Campgrounds

Plan on visiting with midwest relatives when they vacation this July in Destin. While they have hotel accomodations, we plan to take our 31' 5er and camp at an area campground. We haven't been to the coast in some 10 years, as we usually head to the mtns since we purchased our 5er 5 yrs ago. Would like suggestions from those who have camped in Destin AND also suggested routes from B'ham,Al to the Destin area for those who have driven to Destin from "points north." Traveled hwy 331 from Montgomery in the past (driving by car), but have not pulled an RV to the coast. Appreciate any suggestins.

RE: Planning a trip to Grand Canyon and Utau N Parks

The time frame for your trip will not allow much time to really enjoy any specific location. Plan on how far you want to drive each day on the way out and back, considering traffic hours in major cities along your route. Years ago, I visited the north rim of GCNP, then drove up to visit Zion NP and Bryce Canyon NP. From there, I traveled Hwy 12 & 24 over to briefly visit Capitol Reef NP and then on to I-70 over to Moab to visit Arches NP and Canyonlands NP. I then drove down to Monument Valley (several John Wayne movies filmed there). I only spent one to two days at each location tent camping. It may be wiser to travel without the camper in order to see all 6 national parks within your allotted time. Check out the website grandcirle.org for information on the 4-corrners area. Have a great trip.

RE: Another Utah question

Agree with Busskeeper's recommendations. If you like visiting our National Parks, then you could start in Moab. A lot to see at Arches N.P. and Canyonlands N.P. as well as driving along hwy 28. You could then head south and make your way to Monument Valley on the Utah/Arizona border. From there you could drive to Page and Lake Powell (Check out Antelope Canyon nearby). You could then head for the north rim of Grand Canyon (only 10% of visitors compared to 90% for south rim). Driving north from there will take you to Zion N.P. and then Bryce Canyon N.P. Taking scenic hwy 12 & 24 wil take you over to Capitol Reef N.P. That's SIX national parks plus other great locations along the way. Check out the website grandcircle.org as well as other into on the 4/corners area. We enjoyed visiting historical places like Chaco Canyon and Monument Valley as well as Antelope Canyon near Page in addition to the heavily visited National Parks. Whichever you choose to visit, take the time to enjoy each place. Have a great trip.

RE: Smokies trip advice/Gatlinburg and Ashville

There are a number of places to stay in Pidgeon Forge(take exit 66 on I-40 to Sevierville/Pidgeon Forge). This area has a lot of traffic and visitors. We prefer camping in Townsend, which is a lot quieter and a lot less traffic. It is, however just outside the park and near the Cades Cove area. Wears Valley Rd leads approx 12 miles over to Pidgeon Forge and all the restaurants, shopping & rides. We stayed at Bear Creek RV in Asheville couple of years ago. Great farmers market just off I-40. Be careful if you go downtown to shop. Seems the city of Asheville has a contract with a towing svc to pick up any vehicle in the parking lots not in the "proper" parking space (white & yellow spaces). Had our truck towed, along with other vehicles from out of state (Ga,Fl,Al). Had to go to ATM & pay cash to retrieve my truck. The co would not accept check or credit card. You'd think the city would want visitors to enjoy Asheville. Complaining about this "ripoff" got me nowhere. Enjoyed the mtns, but not Asheville---except the farmers market. Have a great trip.

Glad you folks have clarified this issue. Planned on taking I-29 from KC up to Omaha; but will now take hwy 36 from St Joe west to hwy 75 and north up to Omaha. Gwalter and Rhoda, thanks for the input.

RE: Looking for a place in Colorado

Lots of good advice from Busskeeper,4Runnerguy,Lauren and several others. Durango is a GREAT place to basecamp. Driving the million dollar hwy to Silverton and Ouray, visiting Mesa Verde and maybe a trip to the Moab,Utah area (Canyonlands & Arches N.P.s)make this a great place to visit. Buena Vista is also a great place, situated in a valley with a number of 14,000' mtns and lots of hiking, biking and rafting. Cottonwood Pass leads to the Taylor Reservoir area and Crested Butte. Independence Pass leads to Aspen & the Maroon Bells area. We stayed at Basalt and visited Aspen,Maroon Bells(beautiful place)and Glenwood Springs. A lot of Texas folks seem to visit Lake City. Southwestern Colorado has several great state parks as well. Check out the website grandcircle.org along with other sites. It has info on the 4-corners area (Colorado,Utah,Arizona & New Mexico). I have to agree with the others responding that Colorado's mountains in the summer is a great place to camp. Good luck. P.S. Do not rely on AAA or any routing svc that directs you over Independence Pass when visiting the Aspen area.

Auburn, Al. campgrounds

We plan to attend an Auburn football game next month and would like to camp for several days. Would like feedback from those of you who have camped at any of the local campgrounds. We have a 31' fifth wheel with slideouts and prefer full hookups. Thanks for any info you can provide.

RE: Help please from AL to Yellowstone

Lots of info to digest before your trip. Your route & timetable will dictate what other sites you can see. Where you stay while visiting Yellowstone N.P. will affect your timetable. The campgrounds in the park will make it easier for you to see the sites, but are usually reserved far in advance. Call to see if you can obtain a campsite. West Yellowstone as well as campgrounds north (Gardiner) & south (Colter Bay)have full hookups but require longer distances into the park to visit. As mentioned earlier, several days to a week are needed to see all parts of the park. Each area has unique attractions from the Old Faithful geyser area to Mammoth Hot Springs to Tower Junctin to Canyon to Heydan Valley. While there, take time to visit Grand Teton N.P. next to Yellowstone. If you travel I-25 thru Colorado, you could take time to visit Rocky Mtn N.P. So many other parks and places to visit; but you'll have to save some for future trips. Good luck on your trip. Yellowstone N.P. is a must see for everyone.

RE: Looking for overnight stop Alabama

Agree with bobsinn. B'ham South (exit 242 )is just south of the I-65/I-459 interchange and close to I-65. Oak Mtn St Pk is several miles off I-65 & the campground is a couple miles after entering the park--but a nice place to camp.

RE: Least "Steep grade" route from Atlanta to Cashiers, NC

As Horsedoc mentioned, River Vista RV Campground in Dillard is probably a great place to base camp, then take the TV to Cashiers. We always camp at River Vista, then explore Highlands/Cashiers or Franklin and surrounding areas. Highlands is only llM up the mountain from Dillard and Cashiers is another 10M from there. Take I-85, then I-985, then continue on the 4-lane until it becomes 2-lane for the last 20 miles. Hwy 64 is curvy both east & west of Cashiers and I see very few RVs traveling it. If you need to camp in Cashiers (don't know of any RV campground there), you might consider driving up hwy 28 & hwy 107 from the Walhalla area in South Carolina (north of Anderson).

RE: Colorado Springs to Mesa Verde NP

Mtn passes, whatever route you take. Hwy 24 to Buena Vista, then down to hwy 50 OR I-25 south to Pueblo, then west on hwy 50. West of Salida, you'll cross Monarch Pass and continue to Montrose. From there, take hwy 550 south to Ridgeway, hwy 62 & 145 to Telluride, then south to Cortez (just west of Mesa Verde NP. Another option would be I-25 south to Walsenburg, then west on hwy 160. You'll have to cross Wolf Creek Pass east of Pagosa Springs before continuing on to Durango and Mesa Verde NP. The scenery is great, no matter which route you choose. Have a great trip.
