RE: Nook-Kindle

I don't think anyone here knows what and why Walmart does anything.
As others have suggest, buy it when you want it. If you want to have the Fire than right now at Walmart is a good buy and use the Walmart card to buy Kindle books.

Cleo43: not even close to the truth. They fix security issues faster than any other company on the Net. Also their MSE and Firewall are the easiest to run and do a great job of protection. And LittleBill hit it exactly.

RE: Question for people who own BOTH a Kindle and Kindle Fire

Kirbybear: if you are not going to buy a Kindle or a Nook, you can read both of these on your PC. You can also just download the Epub book instead of the Kindle book from your library.
The Adobe Digital reader program that the Libraries use, will read any Kindle or Nook book whether you got it from the library or some other place.
Remember that these books are DRM and you can't move them from PC to PC just in case you didn't know that. I have a Kindle but this information isn't usually stated by others.

brobox: The first clicky from Pawz4me is the one I use now almost exclusive. You will notice that you can select only the Genre you like and skip any or all of the rest. I could give more but those 2 clicky cover most.

RE: Best Free Firewall?

The main problem with the two you asked about is that if you want the "best security" option from them, they give you so many msgs to answer yes to that it becomes annoying. Unless you have some major security issue, the firewall from Windows 7 is plenty.
I switched over a year ago with zero problems.

RE: Nook Tablet vs Kindle Fire

First of all, everyone loves whichever device they bought.
Second of all, most of the time when someone says my device does something your device wont, they are misinformed, misleading you, or it is a mute point.
Both have great customer support. I got my replacement Kindle 24 hours (actually 18 hours) after my call to support which was answer in less than 1 minute.
Both have many free books.
Both have books of every category or genre. Probably more than you will ever read.
Both will hold more books than you will ever read in your lifetime. Most books are less than 1 MB in size.
If you have a computer, you can also keep books there until you need them. thus you will have more books than you could read in two lifetimes.
Books from the library might, just might have more books in Epub mode, but you will still find more than you can read.
I go to two sources for my Kindle books which have over 400 free books available NEW each day. I usually find at least one each to download to my Kindle. I am sure there are Nook books available from sources also.

RE: Has anyone down sized from a 5er to a Class C?

We have gone from a 30 ft 5er with slides to a 25 ft Class C. We have our hobbies and books etc with us.
1. A small class C and probably a larger one drives similar to a pickup or a large van.
2. Most small class C do not have a sofa, just a bed down and the kitchen table with seats.
3. We get rid of everything we don't need, tools, extra chairs, extra dishes, and the like. \
4. We use the shower area as a closet and use the CG facilities.
5. I don't like the configuration for the TV but we don't watch it much. We also bought an outside chair that fits in the aisle when we want to watch TV.
6. We don't have a tow but most people in the CG are always asking us if we want a ride to store. We usually turn them down, but in your case, that is a handy solution when needed.
7. For books we now have a Kindle. Cuts way down and weight.

RE: Millenicom 3G/4G Hotspot Plan

I agree with louiskathy. I have had the service also since Oct with the 4G/3G. That uses the Verizon network. They have 2 3G options, one uses the Verizon and the other uses the Sprint. I also agree the the problems with losing the network is the 4G system, not the wifi router either Samsung or LG. I voiced my complaints with Millenicom and also on forums prior to now.
3 of my issues were clearly with the 4g or towers where I couldn't get any signal while in a 3g area in MS. I still loose the signal now in a 4g area near Mobile Al but it now reconnects quickly without having to turn the router off or taking the battery out for 30 seconds or so. By the way those two functions are different solutions to the same problem.
The reason I have Millenicom is that I am up to 13Gb this month so far and they are much cheaper than the Verizon option of 5G for $50 and $10 a Gb after that.
Go for it.

RE: New Computer

"That statement seems to be hypocritical, at best. Here is another statement of yours:
I wonder why someone needs to worry about how often the AV gets updated."
My comment was taken out of context. As you fully know, I was referring to someone who wanted to get hourly updates.
"Also, your statement is misleading. It is a malware database that is being updated, not a virus detector."
If a malware program gets your credit card number, most people would call that a virus but you are technically correct. I hope you will also correct others on this forum when they call a malware a virus.
"Also, your statement is misleading."
I am curious why you didn't also respond to the Apple person with those misleading statements? Curious.
"There is a reason why Apple tops Consumer Reports reliability ratings."
Yes there is, they charge much more for their computers than do PC mfgs and then can put that money into support. And their support isn't all that much better.
"Unfortunately, Microsoft prices are too high and they use a "subtractive" model to bring in more money to their coffers"
And Apple doesn't have too high prices? Get real. What you fail to mention is that they won't allow other mfgs to make their machines thereby keeping the prices over bloated.
"I doubt that there is any way to discuss this. "
Yes there is, what is the lowest price you pay for an Apple and what is the PC price for the equivilant?
"I will say that I've always bought quality machines that last. I have found their prices to be close."
I guess what you find "close" is a few hundred dollars. And don't talk about quality, if you read this forum, you will find numerous people with computers that are running for 6 years, or in my case, 1 4 years, 1 8 years, and an old ME now over 12 years. By the way, not one of them over $600.

RE: New Computer

What Apple supporters don't tell you. The OS now has a built in virus detector which is updated only once a month or so by Apple.
The Apple support forum is full of things that don't work correctly and need expert help to fix.
If you buy an apple and want to run PC programs you will have to pay an extra $100 to do so to get the MS OS.
Unless you pay a LOT of money, your laptop screen size will small small small.
An last you will pay 3 times the money for the same thing you will get on a PC.

RE: Possible Double Insurance Coverage?

Most if not all Roadside Insurance companies use whatever tow company they can. Sure they may use Coach-net (which I have), but if you are in a small town, they they use who ever they can find and will accept their payment plan. One time a few years ago, I road with the tow driver and he showed me his binder full of contracts with the many different companies. Each had their own rules and prices.
At one time, Good Sam would let youse a local if you knew of someone with a tow truck, and they would then contact them.

RE: Canadian purchasing 3G plan in US

If you go with Virgin, you can buy the monthly cards with cash. When you register with them the first time, you can use the address of the RV park you are at. The address is ridicules as you won't have any contact with them after the initial setup and you can get past that also by doing it yourself.

While I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb computer and have done so in the past with excellent results, I hate pressure sales so I would pass.
You can get refurb computers direct from the mfg if you wish and with no pressure sales.

RE: Vista problems again

1492: Well I have to totally agree with you. I also have tried them all and am now on Microsoft Security Essentials.
Since I have never been attacked or had a virus even get to my AV software, I wonder why someone needs to worry about how often the AV gets updated. Myself I worry more about malware, the type that tracks what you do. That is why I rely more on ad blockers to keep the malware off my computer.
I do a lot of surfing that most people would say is open to virus, but one has never entered my system in over 15 years if not more. Smart surfing and knowing how virus's come is more important than which AV you use, paid or free. They all work, but I like the less intrusive one, that is why I now use MSE and Vista's firewall. I know their limitations but they all have some limitations or annoyances that I don't want or need.

RE: analog to digital converter box questions

1. be sure the antenna switch is for both TVs. That is the little green light that runs of the battery. If you only have one switch than that may be where the problem lies.
2. Switch the 2 converters and re scan them both.
What happens?
If the boxes work the same way, (now the LR doesn't get the channels,) than it is the box.
As far as getting channels (this is for the original LR box I am posting about), at the site I am currently at for the past 30 days, some times I get channel 7 and other times I don't. As far as others getting all the channels, since the huge majority of RVers use dish or cable (if the rv park has it), I would be suspicious that those few of us without dish getting more.
But my friend who is only 4 sites away, constantly looses signal to stations I get. Trees, Leaves, direction, strength of the converter box etc could be the problem.

RE: nook vs kendle

Wadcutter: Let me see if I understand you. If you have a problem with a Nook, you would rather drive miles and miles to find a city that has a B&N and be without your Nook for days and days instead of dialing a phone no and being on hold for less than one minute. I don't know what kind of issues you have, but with the Kindle, the phone person has answered my questions without any hesitation.
By the way, my Kindle had a problem which required a new Kindle. I called at 3 pm and it was delivered by UPS at 9 am the next day.

RE: nook vs kendle

Pawz4me: Sorry, but in rereading what I wrote, I was kind of harsh. Yes if you use the light, as you posted, that will bring down the battery as will leaving on the 3G connect.
Otherthings (for Kindle users) that use up the battery is having put a lot of books on the kindle at one time. In the background, the Kindle is building a database of the words so that when you do a search, the word can be found in multiple books.
One more, turning the Kindle totally off (holding the switch for 8 seconds) is not recommended as background things do not take place and also the tech-knowledge to put the first screen up, takes extra battery power.

RE: nook vs kendle

Zedd: Not only are you wrong about PDF's but you are very wrong about library books. Overdrive has been putting Kindle books on the system since Sept. If you get library books, you will see an option to download either of Kindle or Epub books and in some cases, even PDF format.
As I posted before, get any one of the many types out there, but don't disparage one because of erroneous information.
A third option to use if you have a source for non DRM books, either Kindle or Epub, is to use Calibre to convert them to your favorite format. This is an excellent tool for converting PDF format as some PDFs do not read well on ebook machines.

RE: nook vs kendle

While I love my Kindle I will respond to what I consider to be erroneous info about the Kindle.
"about an hour a day on average, and I recharge about every 10 to 14 days"
That means you are getting 10 to 14 hours and need a recharge? You are doing something wrong. I go 14 days before a recharge but I am using mine about 4 hours a day if not more.
For the person you needed 3G because they were worried about immediate download of a book they wanted to read. If you have your PC with you, you can get any book you want download to your PC and then transfer to your E-reader. Every e-reader will do that. When you stop for gas you will probably find a hotspot there or close by ie McD or coffee shop. Otherwise, you can connect at any CG or ask anyone in the CG with a router to let you download a book. There is the concept of planing ahead a few days or hours? IMHO the only ones that need 3G are those without a computer.
If you can get better cust. support than Amazon/Kindle tell me where. I have called with questions (not problems except 1) and the longest wait time has been under yes under 1 minute.
But the true answer here is not which is better, but which one do you want. They all work, they all have price ranges, they all have access to books, they all have either wifi or 3g or both.
