RE: Buying a used motorhome

3. There is a lot of misinformation in this and other forums about the maintenance costs for DPs. Sure, it costs ~$200-300 for an oil change because mine holds 36 quarts, but it is only needed once a year or 15,000 miles. Similarly, transmission refills and filters are $300-400 but are only needed every 3-4 years. Most of the other maintenance (brakes, tires, etc) is not specific to DPs. Similarly, all of the "stuff" (washer/dryer, microwave, furnace, etc) in a MH may need maintenance from time to time but that's no different in a gasser, a DP, or a home. Still a big difference in maintenance. 8.1 L Engine – 6.5 quarts of oil, 7500 miles or 12 months Allison 1000 Transmission with Transyn - 100,000 miles or 48 months (Change filter 50,000 miles or 24 months) Most motor homes will require maintenance based on the calendar rather than miles driven.

RE: Heading south from canada

We stopped here overnight two years ago. Easy exit and re-entry to I-75 Twin Lakes Park, Bluffton, OH 3506 Township Road 34 Bluffton, OH 45817 Toll Free: (888)436-3610 Phone: (419)477-5255 Snowbirds. "Just too far to drive in one day?" "Along-The-I75" (Surprise!) there IS a campground in Ohio that is open mid-winter for an enroute rest with reasonable fees. That campground is Twin Lakes Park. Do compare our $20 fee to the $33 down the road.

RE: TRAVELING 1200 MILES LOOKING FOR MEMORIES

Parkview Riverside RV is in Hill Country so winter temperatures will be high near 60 with low in 30's. If you want warm weather you will need to head farther south. We traveled around a lot our first year and then settled near Mission, Texas.

RE: Ford Fusion towing 4-down 2010

I have a 2012 Escape Hybrid on order and have a Blue Ox Patriot supplemental braking system. So I plan to run 12 volt from the RV to the starting battery through the umbilical cord to charge the Escape battery while towing. This has worked for us for over 5 years. I put a 15 amp fuse on mh and toad to protect against accidental short. The male connector pins will be hot because the cable is fed from both ends.

RE: Fogged Windows - Possible Fix

RRTom, ... People said I'd have "sweating" in side and the water would run down and ruin the walls. Yeah sure. NEVER HAPPENED. People said I'd sweat and freeze because of the loss of insulation, NEVER HAPPENED. ... That may work in CA but when we stop overnight in winter weather there is a tremendous amount of condensation from the laminated windshield and very little from the dual-pane side windows. We also have a fogging problem but have an appointment with SunCoast next winter.

RE: Winterizing driver's compartment

You don't need insulation, just isolation. We fasten a rod across behind the cockpit area and hang two curtains made of plastic sheet. They overlap about a foot at the middle so we can walk through. It makes an amazing difference as it keeps the warm air at the front. Make the curtains long enough to drape on the floor or the cold air will lift the curtain.

RE: Replacing an automatic transfer switch

July issue of MotorHome magazine has a whole step-by-step article about replacing a transfer switch.

RE: royal bank USA

We have a US$ chequing account and US$ Visa and debit cards with CIBC and keep our money in a Canadian bank until we spend it. We use the debit card at Wal-Mart for cash back with no ATM fees. We set up automatic payment for the Visa bill although you can also use online or telephone banking. For online purchases in the USA we set up a PayPal account with purchases charged to the Visa card. Technology sure has simplified travel expenses.

RE: leaving the house empty in winter

We drain and blow out all the water lines, winterize the appliances and leave some heat on. However last winter a couple of solenoid valves on appliances froze. The plastic housing of the solenoid valve to the refrigerator ice maker froze and ruptured. Cost over $100 for the repair part. A metal solenoid valve on the automatic kitchen faucet was distorted but I was able to repair it. The solenoid valve on the dishwasher had no problem. Next winter I will remove the two damaged valves and drain them.

RE: Snowbird in TX

... We love the weather, the people & the area. We are within 2 miles of the Mexico border & we have not had safety concerns other than petty theft. We go to Nuevo Progresso Mexico a couple times a month. We will not go to Renosa or Matamoras. ... X2 We have been going to the valley since 2005 and have never had a problem of any kind. We love the warm weather and the temperature is significantly cooler as you go farther north.

RE: Steep Incline

It may be quicker to try it with spotters. However if you want to check out a driveway without the motor home, here is a way to do it. Take a heavy string a bit longer than your motor home. Tie a knot at one end. Call this knot A, representing the front of the motor home. Then tie 4 more knots at distances representing the following locations: B – front axle C – mid-point between axles D - rear axle E - Rear of motor home (may be the hitch if this is a low point) Then measure the clearance height at the following points when parked on a flat surface: HA – height under front bumper HC – height under body at midpoint the between axles HE – height under rear bumper or hitch To determine high center at the top of a ramp (requires 2 people) Place the string with Knot C over the high point of the driveway hump. Raise Knot B and Knot D to height HC (height of center above pavement) If Knot C is touching the pavement then you will hang up on the hump. To determine nose or tail contact at the bottom of a ramp (requires 3 people): This is a bit more complex but easily done with 3 people. Compare HA and HE (height of front and rear bumpers) Subtract the two numbers and cut a block of wood to this dimension. Cut a stick to the length of the highest bumper clearance. (HA or HE) Place the knot of the lowest bumper on top of the block. (That is, if the front bumper is lower, place Knot A on the block) Now stretch out the string and drag the Knots A and E along the driveway - with the knot of the lowest bumper on top of the block as described above. The third person will use the stick to measure the distance of Knot B and Knot D above the driveway as the string is moved along the driveway. If the height of Knot B is ever higher than the stick then the front bumper will drag. And if the height of Knot D is ever higher than the stick then the rear bumper will drag. If the curvature of the transition between the ramp and the driveway is not uniform, I would repeat the test with the string in the opposite direction.
