RE: Guy's eastern sierra fishing trip

In a few weeks I'll be up there, also. My 36th annual trip with a buddy to fish Robinson Creek. We usually stay in the same name campground. However, all we catch is 10-12" rainbow stockers, not beautiful browns like you caught. :)
Hard to beat the Eastern Sierras!

AAA Road Service in AK?

Going to AK in a month or so with my truck camper.
I'm a member of AAA in So. Cal with RV towing. I called and they said they didn't have road service in AK, but did in BC and YK. Surprised me a bit. I do have State Farm auto insurance with the road service option (pay, then get reimbursed), so maybe that's good enough.
Any tips?
Thanks,

RE: Yosemite and Eastern Sierras

USFS campground Lower Lee Vining is just before you get to Lee Vining after crossing Tioga Pass. Map is here.
There is also a very nice USFS campground, Dimond O, just west of the park on hwy 120.
Check out my RVing website for 2010 in late September/early Oct. I stayed at the above campgrounds and also several others in the Eastern Sierras. Might be of use. See it here.
The Eastern Sierras are great! :)

RE: Small Solar for Storage Battery Maintenance

I've had a 1/2 amp panel keeping 2 marine batteries fully charged on my boat for 20 years (same panel, different batteries). I live in SoCal.

RE: North Cascades Highway

I'd also suggest considering an alternate route instead of going up I5 all the way to Hiway 20. Instead turn off at Arlington and follow hiway 530 up to Darrington, then turn north and follow the Sauk river to Hiway 20.
I second that. I was at a neat bluegrass festival in Darrington and then took this route to Cascades Hwy and east. Much better than any Interstate. :)

RE: National Forest Maps and CG's plus all public land CG's

I noticed that the US Campgrounds site doesn't list one in our area, curious how many others it doesn't list?!
I travel 6 months out of the year and stay in mostly USFS and BLM campgrounds. I have stayed in a few that are not on the U.S. Campgrounds list. When I notified the site manager of their coordinates, he acknowledged that some of the smaller ones (e.g. 5 sites) are not yet in his database.
However, it's still a GREAT site and I use it extensively every year.

RE: Campground in Groveland, Ca.

There's a very nice USFS campground, Dimond O, just outside the park entrance, off 120. 38 sites with lots of trees. I believe they take reservations. I've been there a couple of times.
Map is here.

RE: North Cascades Highway

I stayed at a nice USFS boondocking spot 17 mi N of Winthrop on the Chewuck River in July, 2009. Here's a map. It was so hot that day that I put my chair in the river to cool off. :)
I took the same route you're planning to. Check my RVing log for 2009
for other possible spots here.

RE: UV cover for solar panel wiring?

After the roof dried, I got up there to see if the wiring had any info on it. It's Belden 27109A, Industrial Grade, Sun Resistant. Looks like I'm OK w/o some extra covering.
I installed my panel six years ago. Don't remember if I checked the wiring specs then or not. Might have initially put extra covering on as a safety factor and then forgot it really wasn't needed by the next year. :)
Anyway, thanks for the tips,
Ralph

RE: UV cover for solar panel wiring?

Thanks for all the tips.
I had white split loom on the last time. Maybe black would work better, or one of the many other suggestions.
Also, I'll check the existing wiring. It actually might be UV resistant. I looked back at my order from 6 years ago and it said "sun resistant, direct burial". However, I'm not sure that is the piece I'm talking about, since it has a 2 pin connector on one end. It is black, however.
Further investigation needed after the roof dries. :)
Thanks,

UV cover for solar panel wiring?

Any suggestions on what to cover the wiring from my panel with for UV protection? I've been putting that corrugated plastic stuff for computer cables on, but it lasts less than a year before it disintegrates.

RE: Bridgeport area

I highly recommend the Hays St. Cafe in Bridgeport, on the right just before exiting town (going south). Always have breakfast there when departing town after my annual Bridgeport fishing trip.
I think last year the grocery across from the Shell station was closed. Might make it even more available for an overnight.

Maybe that is what has happened. Got too hot and plastic melted. I'll look at it closer.

RE: Adding plate to rear axle for jack?

Thanks for the feedback. Guess I'll forget about welding anything on.
My GMC manual says place the jack under the axle between the spring u-bolts and the shock.
BTW, I am only interested in getting one wheel off the ground, not both.
Thanks,
Ralph

Adding plate to rear axle for jack?

In 92K miles I've never had to use the jack for my GMC 2500HD. In prep for Road Trip 2012 (my 7th), I was reading up on how to do it. The hydraulic jack that came with the truck has a top with a "groove" to supposedly fit around the rear axle. However, if I got another hydraulic jack as a backup, it wouldn't have the grooved top. Whether the jack top had a groove or not, seems to me if the jack tilted enough (dirt compaction, etc.) the axle might slip off the jack.
Had anyone ever had a plate welded to the rear axle for jack purposes? Is it something that would be useful?
Thanks,
|

Replace DRL bulb in 2006 GMC 2500HD?

Got everything out OK so that I can grip the 4114 type bulb to remove it from the socket. However, it doesn't want to slide out. Looks like there could be a plastic tab on each side that goes into a groove in bulb plastic base.
Any tips?
Thanks,

I really enjoyed your photos. If all goes as planned, I'll be seeing the same views from my truck camper in July, on the way to Alaska.
