Adding Additional Underbelly Insulation

I've had to remove about 1/3 of the underbelly cover from my 5er. It had 3 of pieces insulation around the tank. None that I could see anywhere else.
Has anyone added any additional insulation? What do you think?

RE: Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

I think that we can all agree that there is torsional loading on the I-beams when turning corners and bracing is generally marginal in some trailers between the I-beams with additional bracing needed between the I-beams either or both attached to the I-beam and or the spring hangers such as with the Mor Ryde X-factor. Will that lessen the likelihood of cracks?

RE: Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

Now that Lippert has purchased Dexter's chassis division, will they stand good for the issues on frames that were built before the take over? I have read that Lippert has the same issues on their chassis as the cross member design is similar. I have also read that Lippert was fixing these at their expense beyond the warranty.
Steve
I did not mention it, but I initially contacted Lippert and was told that they assume no responsibility for any Dexter frames made prior to the buyout of Dexter frame. Fortunately I continued to pursue the issue in other ways and may get some support from Lippert but not sure!!!

RE: Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

EXRocketScientist,
Sounds like you had the same exact problem I have. Did you try and get Dexter to help in fixing it-just wondering. I also failed to mention that I installed the Dexter EZ Flex system on my trailer which I think you might have installed. I somewhat understand what you did, but a picture (as they say is worth a 1000 words) if you are able to take one would be greatly appreciated. One other question, was the C channel installed between the I-beam, welded all around or just welded in a couple of places? Thanks for your excellent response.

RE: Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

We have approximately 15,000-17,000 miles on it. Based on the amount of rust, I would say that these cracks have been there for almost a year.

RE: Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

The picture of the inside channel is a little deceiving in that I couldn't take a picture of the entire "c" channel. The channel is installed vertically, but it is about 2 inches shorter than the height of the I-beam.

Cracks in Dexter StructuraI I-Beams on Jayco 5th Wheel

While performing my annual inspection, cleaning and re-packing of the wheel bearings on our Jayco Eagle 5th Wheel (Model 31.5 FBHS), my son noticed a crack in the web of one of the two main support I-beams running the length of the trailer. Upon further inspection, we found similar cracking on the opposite side I-beam. The cracks were located almost above the last axle on the trailer and approximately two inches from the bottom of the I-beam flange. We then pulled down the underbelly covering and discovered that there was a perpendicular cross beam (it appears to be a channel beam) welded to the web on the inside of each I beam at the exact location of the cracks. Unfortunately, we discovered that the cracks were completely thru the web of both I-beams. After calling Jayco and being informed that the warranty had expired on my 5r which is an 08 model, they referred me to a Jayco employee who knew some of the personnel that had worked at Dexter frame but now worked at Lippert after Lippert bought Dexter frame out sometime last year. I called Lippert this morning and finally after talking with several people found a gentleman who had previously worked for Dexter but now worked at Lippert. He was very helpful and asked that I send him pictures of the cracks. Hopefully he will give me his opinion on the cause of the cracking and the proper fix.
I thought that I should post this for others with longer Jayco trailers and encourage them to inspect the I beams on their trailers especially in the areas around the axles. It appears to me that these are fatigue cracks caused by the trailer shifting while being towed especially while cornering. Here is a link to the pictures of the cracks we found:
Dexter Frame Cracks on Jayco
As some of you probably know, these superlite trailers have minimally sized I-beams and the metal on them is not very thick. It would take an expert welder to weld any additional supports, bracing, etc. on them without further damage. If anyone has found a similar problem and/or corrected a similar frame issue, please let me know. Any help or opinions from any engineers out there would also be appreciated. Thanks.

RE: Question about jacking up trailer

My owner's manual for my 31.5 BHS Jayco says to jack the trailer at the frame.

RE: Blood Thinner

I've taken warfarin for years now. Recently, Quest Labs has apparently started entering prescriptions into a computer database which is accessible to Quest labs in various locations so that you can go to any Quest Lab and get your Pt test. I do not know if this is a nation way system or not. My doctor sends them a standing order for six months at a time. I also know that some doctors can directly submit an order for lab tests directly into the Labcorp system. I would check both labs to see if your doctor can just submit a standing order to either Quest or Labcorp that could be used nation-wide.

Two years ago, I got a discount for camping, but it was not 50%. Don't recall exactly how much it was but it was considerably less than 50%.

RE: Cracked injector line on 5.9 CTD

Had the same thing happen to my 05 Ram on I95 south just outside Jacksonville Fl on Friday afternoon at about 5:00 pm. Pretty scary as cars and trucks were flying past at 75+ mph. Thankfully there was a wide shoulder and the freeway right of way was extremely wide also. Had to get the truck towed to a dealer in Jacksonville and a separate tow for my 5er into a San Augustine campground. Not a pleasant experience and a pretty costly one too with all the towing involved!

RE: Does bedrest for dog w/ heartworms mean no activity at all?

I volunteer for a rescue organization as a foster parent. We have kept a number of small dogs being treated for heartworms. I take them out and allow them to walk about 150 feet at a slow pace to potty. Definitely no chasing squirrels, playing with other dogs etc. Our vet says that the critical time is about 7-10 days as the worms are dying and disintegrating then. However, we keep them quiet as possible during the entire treatment process.

RE: Camping near Charleston, SC

Camped there this past summer when visiting Charleston. It was clean, well maintained and relatively handy to Charleston proper. It is located on a busy highway, so getting in and out could be a problem during rush hour especially with a trailer. Noise was not a problem for us as the campground extends quite a distance back from the road. There's an excellent seafood restaurant nearby that the campground was giving discount coupons for. Did not see any long term residents there that I remember. Swimming pool is small. Some of the sites are not very shaded. Hope that helps.

I've got the best deals on new suburbans from them and we shopped a lot of dealers around the Houston area.

Purchased two suburbans from the dealership. Their service was okay. They replaced the transmission twice under warranty on my first suburban. What do you need to know about it?

RE: Charlotte NC

We have camped in Dan Nicolas Park near Salisbury several times. I think that there is enough to entertain your DD there as others have mentioned, but it has no pool. it is conveniently located near several race shops and not that far from Charlotte. The park does not have full hookups but nicely spaced and shaded sites.

RE: Sea foam in crankcase. Good or bad ??

I just put a can of SF in the crankcase of my 99 Suburban after changing the intake gaskets. While changing the gaskets we noticed a lot of carbon buildup on the heads, and the vehicle had a loud clicking sound from one of the valves or lifters. After less than 100 miles of driving, the loud clicking has disappeared. I will change the oil and filter after about 1000 miles. We have used it a number of times in the crankcase of other vehicles without any problems.
