RE: Transmission temperature

We have a Chevy Silverado 3500HD CC diesel dually with an Allison transmission. Our setup is a bit different than most posting here, so this information may not apply. So, FWIW...we were towing last summer in the Shenandoah and Great Smokey Mountains and began running trans. temps around 210 to 215 degrees on inclines. I became concerned and called our dealer while on the road. We were told they didn't consider a transmission to be hot until about 270 degrees. At that point, it would go into limp mode to save the transmission. Beautiful thing about the Allison tranny is that it's computer controlled so that it is almost impossible to do anything that will cause permanent damage. They will shut themselves down before that can happen.
At any rate, the dealer's giving quite a bit higher range on trans temps than what most are considering here.
I do change the spin on trans filter and the interior trans filter at 25,000 mile alternating intervals as per the manual. A complete fluid change occurs with the interior filter. Probably correctly maintaining your vehicle will do more to protect it than anything else.
