RE: Estimating Hitch Weight?

If you want a trailer that will tow good without sway then use the 15% figure. You can tow with as little as 2% but then towing may be a white knuckle experience and possibly cost you or others some serious harm or possibly death.

RE: Campground Etiquette - pass-throughs and back-ins

I prefer to leave it up to the owner of the campground. If they want to reserve the pull through for rigs that can not back up then that is OK with me. And yes there are some that can not back up such as Motor Home with a toad that only want to stay the night and get an early start the next day. Then there are some like myself that sometimes double tow and would prefer not to unhook the second trailer and park it some where away from my unit so I can also get an early start the next day. If I only have a single trailer or Motor Home without a toad and the campground tells me they only have backins then that is their privilege to save the pull through for the oversize rigs.

RE: Trailer Sway

First you need to get your setup on the scales. I mean the real thing spend a couple dollars at the local CAT scale. If you find you have at least 15% tongue weight then there is something else bad wrong. One item I can think of is a bent axle on the trailer or an axle that was set wrong. That is one of the spring hangers is not in the proper location which is a common problem with Lippert frames.

RE: Construction debris under cabinets

Check your heating ducts. When I replaced a heat register with one that I could close off I found a lot of construction debris in the duct work.

RE: Squeal / squeak on heater startup (goes away quickly)

The major problem will be getting the unit out so you can oil the bearing. Now that all the hard work has been done I recommend spending a few more dollars and replace the motor. That will last 10-15 years where the oil may last 2 years.

RE: 5th wheel bucking

A major cause of the problem described is low pin weight. When you haul a trailer that is too big for the TV the result is lowering the pin weight so the TV rear axle will not be overloaded. Air springs and pin boxes will help but the trailer will never tow well if the pin weight percentage is below 20%. A level trailer is also required to tow well. I see many toy haulers going down the freeway with the front at least 5 inches higher than the rear. I am sure those are a handfull to tow.

RE: Heat pump, yea or nay

This is a question only you can answer. Depends on how you plan to use your RV. IF in a mild climate and connected to shore power all the time then maybe. But if there is a lot of dry camping without shore power then NO. My RV has an air conditioner and in two years even spending the winter in Arizona I have never used it. I run it for 30 minutes twice a year to hopefully keep the seals and bearings lubricated.

RE: Extended warranty worth it?

My experience with extended warranties they cover nothing. Read the fine print which may require a lawyer to understand what it does say and I am sure you will find it does not cover everything. Put the money in a money market and at the end of the warranty period you will most likely still have money in the account after paying for any problems you have.

RE: Trailer falling off blocks

Chock the wheels before unhooking from the TV. Chock the wheels before unhooking from the TV. Chock the wheels before unhooking from the TV. Chock the wheels before unhooking from the TV. Chock the wheels before unhooking from the TV. Hook up the TV before removing Chocks. Hook up the TV before removing Chocks. Hook up the TV before removing Chocks. Hook up the TV before removing Chocks. I just had to add this. Very dangerous to be hooking up or unhooking a trailer if the wheels are not Chocked correctly.

RE: Pet Wellness - Temperature/ Power Outage Alarm

I changed my home phone to the Verizon Home Connect. Unlimited calling at about $25.00 month. When we travel with the 5th wheel and go to Arizona for the winter we take the Home Connect with us. Works very good. For an alarm system I use a Sensaphone. They make a 4 and 8 channel system. The temperature alarms are adjustable. For the dogs a neat feature is the microphone. When you call the unit to interrogate the system it will let you listen to what is going on around the Sensaphone via a built in microphone. It also has a built in power failure alarm and also an adjustable noise level alarm. I had previously tried to use a GE Bluetooth adaptor to the cell phone. I had a FA-B-CCA but could not get it to work with the Ge Bluetooth adaptor.

RE: Help planning Mich-Arizona trip in mid-to-late June

I would allow 3-4 days at Grand Canyon. There is much to see and sun rise and sun sets are worth seeing. Agree with Trailer Village. The bus service in the park is great and I highly recommend you use it. The train ride into the park is worth it but will take two days of your time. We took the train in and out one day then took the 5th wheel in and stayed 3 nights. Still did not see all there is to see. Colorad has a lot to offer but you need to allow 1-3 days for many of the places such as Mesa Verde National Park.

RE: Brake Amperage

If you replace magnets Dexter recommends you do all 4 to insure equal magnet action thus equal braking.

RE: Brake Amperage

The P3 will give voltage and current. What is the voltage when you get the 9.5-10 amps? When we have those two data points we can calculate the resistance and possibly determine if all 4 magnets are active. As for line voltage drop there is very little with most trailers.

RE: Allison ATF change, not as many qts as expected

Just be carefull that you do not overfill the transmission. A major cause of an Allison that will overheat. I dropped my pan after the truck had set for several weeks. I got 12 qts with one oil drain. If you are carefull I do not see where it could cause any problems to drop the pan. It does give you a better indication of what is going on. If you find a lot of junk in the pan you then know there are probably problems down the road. If the pan is clean it will give you that priceless peace of mind.

RE: real world pin weights

The more pin weight the better the unit will tow provided the TV can handle the weight. That is 25% will tow better than 15% it is simple physics.

RE: TPMS ques

I have found reception in your driveway and reception at 65 mph on a busy freeway with lots of external noise sources are two different birds.

RE: TPMS ques

5 years with a PressurePro and no problems. It has saved my bacon twice so it has paid for its self. I have a utility trailer that I tow behind a 5th wheel. I use the external antenna that PressurePro has to insure good signal. I mounted the external antenna under the truck on the factory trailer hitch. I found the external antenna worked better than the repeater.

RE: Can't drive over 55 MPH...

If the only thing you did was replace the tires you have a bad tire. One of the new tires has a defective steel belt. When my father was doing front end alignments when radial tires first came out he run into this problem many times. A customer would have an alignment after installing new tires and the car would not drive right. Replace the tires and things were OK. Try putting your spare on and see if you can isolate the problem. Better yet borrow a couple tires from a friend. I am sure you will find a defective tire provided the only thing done was new tires.

RE: 08 1/2 ton Silverado with 3.42 gears towing 6000lbs?

I would recommend you give you current truck a try first. If your towing miles are less than 10% of the miles on the truck you may be happy with the 3.42. If you are towing much more then you should probably get a truck that matches your needs. Despite popular belief 3.73 or 4.10 gears will not increse your hp. They probaly will not get you to the top of the hill any faster. They will not lower your rpm either. The only way you will get max hp is to run the 5.3 at the rpm that produces the most power and that will require high rpm's which is about 5000 rpms.

RE: Pin mounted bike carrier & short bed truck?

As said it depends on the geometry of your system. My Cruiser 5th wheel has an extended pin box. As such I have more than enough clearance between my bike and the truck. I have a 05 short box 2500 HD Dmax Crew cab.
