RE: How did you start fulltiming?

Well we did it all in about 3 months! Decided to do it in April, Found our motorhome in May, bought it in June, had massive garage sales, selling on Craigslist, Changed our address & out of the house by end of July! We were lucky that we were renting and didn't have a house to sell but it was 3000 sq ft and every room and closet was packed. So - a year? No problem!!

RE: using UPS mail forwarding

We have been using a "mailbox store" for the last two years. Being a California resident doesn't give us a lot of options but we did want to make sure that we had an actual "address" and not a PO Box. It is definitely more pricey than you can find in the more "full-time rv friendly" states, but it has worked great for us. We pay the annual box rental fee and they charge us whatever the regular charge is to ship our mail. This charge is a few dollars over the regular post office charge but it's nominal. I changed my address before we left town so I had a few months to get to know everyone in there before we left. During tax season (I am an accountant) I call every week and they will go through every piece of my mail with me while I tell them what to throw out or send or even to open. I could also have them fax me something if I needed it immediately. Outside of tax season, if we're not expecting anything, we usually call for mail every other week. It's worked out great and the shipping time from Tahoe to Florida, where we are now, is only 2 days with Priority mail!

RE: young full timers

Don't sell the house until you've tried it for a couple of years. Full timing ain't for everyone. What sounds good today might be a crimp in your style tomorrow. We're not young but we've been living in our travel trailer for over 2 years except when we go home once or twice a month on weekends. I couldn't see having only this trailer to come home to for the rest of my life. If we were filthy rich it might be OK for an extended amount of time until we've see everything we wanted to see but then I'd still want a place to call home where I can stretch out and have a garage to put my vehicles in and a place to tinker with hobbies. In a trailer you're pretty much stuck with not very much room no matter how big your RV is. The best thing about living in an RV is that you can move anytime you get fed up with your neighbors. ;) Actually I totally disagree with this comment! We've been full-timing for almost 2 years now and sooooo glad we don't have to worry about a house to take care of and deal with tenants and repairs. And who knows when you decide to "settle down" where you'll end up. Cut your apron strings and fly - it's a blast!!

Be sure to check out NuRVers.com - awesome group of young and "young-minded" folks doing it a little differently. You will find soul mates there I can assure you!!

RE: New to Full timing

Most of the RV parks we have been to do not have room for an extra trailer. Some will have a separate storage or parking area but in our experience that is rare.

RE: nuking dinner

On driving days I either cook ahead, try to make sure I have some left overs available or pick up something at the market before we leave. It's all about planning! I actually do the same thing for lunches while we are on the road too. Good luck!

RE: White Sands to Carlsbad Caverns on hey 82E

Once you get up & over the Sacramento Mtns. is an easy drive. From Alamogordo you climb 4000' (+) elevation in 16 miles to Cloudcroft then back down to Elk...30 miles. The road is good and used by large vehicles.... Thanks!

White Sands to Carlsbad Caverns on hey 82E

Is this road ok for a 35' MH towing?

Gila Ranch Hotsprings New Mexico

Has anyone driven here in a large motorhome? We are 35' & were told there of a special route that is more big rig friendly but we are concerned about the final entrance into the campground. Would appreciate any input. Thanks!

RE: battery issues...

I'll bet you have a lot more draw than you think. Use a clamp on ampmeter and see what you're really using. IMHO, 2 batteries is simply not enough for boondocking of any length. Well we have a monitor and that's what it said we were pulling...don't know how else to monitor it. We had no problem last year when we spent a month in Quartzite running all the same equipment, but our converter went bad and we may have damaged the batteries, plus from what everyone says 4 year old batteries are old

RE: battery issues...

Hi Pink, 8 amps for 24 hours is 192 amp-hours. Since batteries last better if they are not taken below 50% state of charge, that implies a battery bank of about 386 amp-hours. That means going with four batteries. Can you tell us more about these "12 year" batteries? Thanks - we don't need 24 hours, though, so for 1/2 that it sounds as if we might be ok with 2 batteries... 12 year is what was quoted to us by the store, but he may not understand about full-timers and working in your rig.

battery issues...

We have a 4 year old 35' southwind with the original batteries (2 deep cycle 6 volt). We've been doing a bunch of boondocking and the batteries don't seem to be holding their charge very long. We are going to replace the batteries with new ones a retailer says will last 12 years. We have 3 laptops & 3 phone chargers & a mifi. Are 2 batteries enough? Or do we really need to go to 4?

RE: NOLA Mardi Gras visit

I live in Thibodaux. There are a few nice family oriented parades, also Houma (15-20 miles) has a few more parades. There are a few private campgrounds nearby also Thibodaux Civic Center has parking with electricity and water and dump station. http://ci.thibodaux.la.us/departments/civic_center/RV%20Registration.asp http://www.hideawayponds.com/ http://www.lakeendpark.net/ Thanks for the tips - I have a request in for the civic center right now!

RE: NOLA Mardi Gras visit

Any other good places to stay for the pre-mardi gras celebration. We heard that Thibodaux was good but no rv parks there.

NOLA Mardi Gras visit

We have never been to New Orleans before & know it's quite late to be making campground reservations now but would appreciate any tips you all might have. I have heard that there are lots of festivities going on in the weeks prior to Mardi Gras. To really "experience" it what would you recommend as "must do's". Should we be sure to be there on fat Tuesday or does it really not matter? And some options for campgrounds or places to park that might not be already full?!

RE: Jury Duty in CA

Might just be easier to fly home for the week! except that IT's NOT OUR HOME! We'd have to fly there which would cost us about $1000, rent a car and get a hotel room!

RE: Jury Duty in CA

we are all for civic duty (especially considering my DH is 25 year retired Air Force veteran)...but when called 4-5 times a year that is a bit much, especially considering we don't live there any more and it would cost a small fortune to get back there just to serve...

RE: Jury Duty in CA

Appreciate your response! But yes, for work reasons, DH has a DVBE (disabled veterans business enterprise) requirement to remain a CA resident...that's our biggest issue, if not for that and some work that it will bring in we would move to SD in a minute! We really don't expect to return, maybe for a visit now and then or maybe in 5 years, but nothing really planned. And it's not an easy place to get to!
