RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

Any sightseeing (Yosemite, etc.) will be in my son's Audi...much smoother than my 3500 4wd dually!

RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

Hey, coolbreeze01, they DO install exhaust brakes in Vegas!! And I'm getting one. This whole "mountain" thing has been nagging and nagging at me so I finally bit the bullet, took some money out of savings, and there will be a new BD exhaust brake installed on my Dodge before we leave Vegas.

RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

Oh, I'd LOVE to get the exhaust brake installed. We surely could have used them in Virginia last year! It's sounding more and more like we'll be taking I-15 to Mojave (I need to stop at a geocache near Edwards to drop off a travel bug) then up 14 to 395 and on up to Lee Vining. Then visit the park in comfort in my son's car.

RE: Cool Mods

Where did you put these expansion tanks? Looks like the pictured one is in the house as opposed to the basement next to the pump. And what did you tap into? I don't see how this would alleviate the pump noise though since the pump would have to go on as you use the water in this tank, wouldn't it?

RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

Okay, another question. On 395, are the ascents to these summits (Conway and Deadman) steep? What about the descents? Can you tell I want to do this but am a bit (a BIT? A LOT!) nervous about the ascents and descents and final altitudes. And I assume that there is a truck lane o all the ascents. And it won't be like going from 2000 ft. to 8200' in a short distance, right? I'll probably already be at 6000 ft or better just driving along, right?

RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

The reason we chose the western route is because there are some high passes along 395. (1) I have emphysema and don't do well at altitudes; otherwise, that was my route of choice. And (2) I don't have an exhaust brake on my Dodge 3500 and, after one smoking brake episode, surely don't want another coming down from high passes.
I know the 95 route would be easy but then not too sure how we'd get back to it after going over to Lee Vining.

Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

When we leave Las Vegas, we plan on going south on I-15 to 58 then 58 to 99 to around Fresno then switch over to 41 for the rest of the trip to I-80 which we'll use to go to Reno. We'll be stopping in Mojave then up somewhere around Yosemite Nat'l Park and then on to Reno. Can anyone give me an idea of road conditions (construction, potholes, etc.) and altitudes along these highways?

HE DIDN'T ASK HOW HE DID IT. Read the OP again. He asked WHAT and WHERE. Sheesh! Must be that northwest water that got to you two.

RE: Cool Mods

We got one of these and since important papers are where they should be, in a safe deposit box, we use this for a spare $20 bill, truck key, credit card, and house key. There's room for more smaller stuff but we've got what we need in there. Of course, this isn't any good for those who need the hitch to pull their trailer. The former owner of my truck pulled a trailer but we have a fiver so it's "found" space for us.

RE: Oxygen users

Tom & Diane, why not go to California to see the ocean? If you go down to I-10 the across the bottom of the Rockies, there's no altitude to speak of there. And at the ocean in California, you'd be at sea level.
Does your doctor think there are more germs at altitude or something? Heck, one of the finest copd hospitals is at 5000 feet in Denver.
I'm sorry but I, too, have copd (35% FEV1 AFTER my LVRS) and I sure as heck would talk very seriously to my doctor who told me that I couldn't go where I wanted and I would most definitely get some answers. The germs aren't any more at altitude than they are in Iowa; O2 can be supplemented with an increase in liter flow. I'd want some definite answers on why she said no. There's too much to see out here in these beautiful states to just sit in Iowa...although our first year on the road, we stayed in a lovely COE park in Onawa.

RE: Cool Mods

I have the same hanger bar (bought it at Walmart) but I put mine inside my closet door and hang my necklaces on it. I make jewelry so I had to buy another one to hang inside the medicine cabinet door for more necklaces. I just screwed mine on but then they're going into solid wood.
I love the fireplace!! But don't have room for one since I made shelves for the space under and behind our TV.
We did buy a heater from Tractor Supply (Comfort Heater, I think) and that really heats the house up just fine.

RE: Custom made spice racks

If anyone would like my son to make them one or two, I'm sure he'd be glad to for the price of the wood and slides. And no, this is not what he does for a living, LOL. Right now, he's cutting a board out of my dining table to make it narrower and then he's going to cut 8" from the end and make it a drop leaf. He just loves working with wood.
Since we're fulltimers, we need to use space as efficiently as possible.
We started out with the little plastic containers, wrapped with a strip of velcro and then stuck on the strips you see on the door. Worked for a couple of weeks and then they started falling off. Might have worked better if we had used heavy duty velcro.

Well, that worked almost perfectly! I guess I should have put my spice racks as a "Reply" in this threat; instead they got into their own little thread. Oh well. I'm learning.

Custom made spice racks

In cabinet over sink. We used to keep our spices in a low sided dish but they still ended up in a jumble after driving so I asked my son, who loves working with wood, to make me 2 spice "drawers" to fit into the cabinet above the sink, next to the stove. After I had the 2 in, there were still spices left over so I moved some dishes over and he made the third. They are really handy and everything stays nice and neat.

Thank you, Timothy. I already have stuff in photobucket; I just didn't know which of the HTML options to use. I shall try it.

RE: Medicare-supplement???

The reason SS is in trouble is because Johnson took it out of its separate fund and put it into the general fund so the debt wouldn't look as bad as it really was then gave SS a bunch of IOU's which, as you know, are worth diddly-sheet. If it was put back into its own fund in the care of SSs trustees, it would be earning the money that would help keep it more solvent.
And I so totally agree about malpractice reform. Here in Las Vegas (and we've seen it in other places we travel as well), lawyers advertise on TV about "if you're getting headaches now, when you're in your 40's and 50's, call us. They could be caused by something the delivering doctor did during your birth" and other such hogwash.
