RE: Free E-books. Where?

If you're looking for sources of e-books besides (or in addition to) the library: Go to Amazon and in their search bar type in the name of one of your favorite authors and "kindle books free". James Patterson has quite a few free books. The others . . . maybe not. It's up to the publisher when/if to offer free books, and most of them tend to do it when an author is getting ready to release a new book (on the theory that offering an older book for free will stir up interest in a new release by the same author). Many people who get free Kindle books don't just look for particular authors. Instead, they browse the selection of free books frequently to find ones they're interested in. There are several sites that list free Kindle books. EReaderIQ is one of the better sites. Sometimes a free book is offered for a long time, sometimes for 24 hours or less. The site is updated hourly. Edited to add: You can use the EReaderIQ site to do an advanced search of Amazon free books. Select the category of books you're interested in, and in the price field enter "0" to "0" and the free books in that genre will show up.

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

There are covers with a built-in light available for Kindles. The light runs off the Kindle's battery. Link. I love mine. Nook is coming out with a version of the e-reader with a "glowlight" (built in light). Link. And rumor has it that Amazon will soon be releasing something similar. I'd have to take a good long look at one of those before I'd buy, and be convinced that the "glow light" isn't just a different name for back lighting (which causes me eye strain), that it doesn't degrade the wonderful contrast of e-ink, and that it wouldn't be more disruptive to others since it seems to shine out (instead of down like the Kindle lighted cover).

RE: Please wash your hands

Considering all the zillions of animals that urinate and defecate in rivers, I really don't think some extra added in by rafters is going to make much difference.

RE: another dog treat causing illness

If the bar codes first 3 digits are 690 to 692 it is made in China. 00 to 09 USA or Canada 30 to 37 France 471 Taiwan 49 Japan 50 UK That doesn't appear to be entirely accurate. Analysis: The information above is misleading and unreliable, on two counts: There's more than one kind of bar code in use around the world. UPC bar codes, the type most commonly used in the United States, do not typically contain a country identifier. A different type of bar code known as EAN-13 does contain a country identifier, but it's more commonly used in Europe and other countries outside the U.S. Even in the case of EAN-13 bar codes, the digits associated with country of origin don't necessarily specify where the product was manufactured, but rather where the bar code itself was registered. So, for example, a product manufactured in China and sold in France could have an EAN-13 bar code identifying it as a "French" product. Looking for a "Made in XYZ" label is generally more helpful, but, particularly with regard to foods and beverages, there's no sure-fire way to determine in every case where a product or its components originated. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration mandates country-of-origin labeling on many food products, but there are exceptions, most notably the entire category of "processed foods." Consumer groups are currently advocating the closure of these loopholes. Source: Urban Legends And Snopes pretty much says the same thing: Link

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

However, I am cheap and I can go down to the local used book store, yard sales, and what not and load up with 50 cent paperbacks and I do not like the prices of E-books. If I spend 50cents on a book I dislike and cannot finish, I can take it back for credit or sell in a yard sale--spend seven bucks for an e-book and your stuck with it! I've read 27 books so far this year and spent $23.95. That averages out to 89 cents a book. I spent absolutely nothing on gas and very little of my time to get them. Some were best sellers, some were freebies, some were former best sellers that were offered as Amazon daily deals and special offers for Kindle owners. If I pay for an e-book from Amazon and don't like, I have seven days to "return" it for a full refund.

RE: Proposed USDA rule change internet puppy sales

LOL! I love a good pun (intended or not). :B I'm guessing BC Snob manages to get by okay. Last I heard, most people with the word "scientist" in their job title usually do pretty well. And apparently they get to leave their work in the lab, too. Can't beat that.

did you ever try to kill a cockroach with an E-Book? No. But I never tried to kill a cockroach with a traditional book, either. That's what old newspapers, magazines and flyswatters are for. ;)

RE: Campgrounds near Raleigh, NC

The most convenient place to the city is the campground at the state fairgrounds. Link

RE: I still read books, the kind without batteries!

I'm an e-book fan. They are much more convenient for me in a multitude of ways. But I certainly respect those who prefer their books in other forms. I refuse to call a certain form of book a "real" book. To me a book is its content, not its form. As long as I can read it, it's very much real regardless of the form. So I'm always a bit puzzled by those who seem to feel that form is what makes a book "real." I suspect each time there has been a change in form for the written word (from scroll to wax tablet to codex to book to e-book) there have been those who prefer to stick with the familiar.

RE: Why do I feel like appoligizing....??

What makes you think you have more stuff or more money or are having more fun than the guy next to you in the tent or what ever? Agreed. I never know whether to laugh or roll my eyes that so many people on here seem to ignorantly believe that the people in tents or pop-ups aren't in an RV because they can't afford it. I learned to not look at peoples' possessions and make judgments on their financial status from parents and grandparents who were very well off, but chose to live quite modestly.

RE: June 1st 2012 is "Save Calvin's Tooth Day"! p.5

Since she's showing some tummy discomfort and has a history of pancreatitis, if she were mine I'd hold off on making any food switch for at least a week or so. You don't want the tummy issues to get worse and then have to wonder if it's the food switch or something else. What I'd do is get some oatmeal or white rice. Cook up a big batch until it's really mushy (over done). Mix some of that in with her chicken for a week or so and if her tummy doesn't show any sign of worsening then think about changing to another brand of dog food. With the history of pancreatitis, whatever you do you'll want to stick with something relatively low in fat. If you decide to go for another brand of dog food today, I'd check the fat percentage on the r/d and try to find something that's not a lot more.

It sounds like her appetite is really off. Maybe time for a vet check? Or it could be that the "chunk of boiled chicken" is enough for her now?

RE: How do you handle leaving pets while site seeing?

We handle it as if we were home. How long can you leave them home alone? Take them for a nice walk before you go, crate them if they are small enough. Close the blinds, leave a radio/tv on to block outside noise. Keep the temperature comfortable. Keep the sight-seeing short until you get them adjusted to being alone. Ditto. As far as the fence and dog door -- I suspect that would be a definite "no" at almost all campgrounds, since almost all of them state that dogs can't be left outside unattended. And beyond campground rules, it's a huge safety issue. Dogs can and do get stolen all the time.

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

More productive would be a suggestion that would address your fears. :h What? My "fear" of self-titled trainers who don't know what they're doing? I don't fear that for myself at all, as I've got years of my own dog training experience to rely on and am lucky enough to have as friends a few excellent trainers. I do "fear" it for John Q. Public, who generally has no idea that anyone can stick the word trainer after their name. But I don't feel the need to make suggestions. As I said, I don't know what the solution to the problem is. And certainly this is one of those situations where it's a lot easier to say what's NOT a viable solution than it is to come up with something that is. As Dr. Doug said, aggressive dog laws are probably the best we can do. But even that is fraught with problems IMO (the main one being that a dog is usually only labeled as aggressive after a problem has occurred).

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

I suggest mandatory participation in free dog citizen training - to teach dogs the basics of obedience and behavior, as well as training the owners in what they need to know to protect the lives of other people. A dog-owner's license, as well as a dog license, you could say. REGULATION is a far more effective answer to these kinds of problems than any kind of banning. I don't know what the solution to the problem is (and I do believe there's a problem), but this isn't it. The last thing we need is more legislation that effectively punishes everyone for the "sins" of a very, very few (in that way this idea is very similar to BSL). Plus earlier in your post you say the answer isn't more laws, and then you propose . . . more laws. :h There's also the issue of no degree programs, no independent licensing or credentialing process for dog trainers . . how would the powers that be designate someone qualified to conduct these classes? I've met enough supposed "trainers" who know almost as much about canine behavior as the average preschooler to find the idea very scary.

RE: Ticks!

I dont think some of you could handle it in the northwoods of WI. When out in the woods, I get at least 4 ticks per day. Last year I applied tick preventative a little to late to my Black Lab dog. I had to pick 36 ticks off of him. He was only in the woods for 3 hours. Not fun on a black dog. Missed one and it got to the size of 2 corn kernals before I got it. Had another engorged on him this spring about the size of 1 kernal. Ticks are just part of life here. Back in the day before all the spot-on tick stuff like Frontline was available, it was a nightly ritual from spring through fall to de-tick the dogs. We had three, and it was common to pull 20 or 30 ticks off each dog. What fun.

RE: Myrtle beach next week! Yeah!

It's actually better than it used to be. They've renovated the general store/laundromat area and many of the bath houses. And what used to be a little snack/ice cream shop behind the store now has a bigger menu -- burgers and chicken and fries, etc. I didn't know they'd ever allowed specific sites to be reserved. When making reservations we've always specified the general area we want (we prefer to be three or four spots back from the ocean road), and they've always accommodated our request.

RE: FDA Report of Diamond Plant (SC)

Diamond dog food just had a recall of its dry dog food, I think mainly on the east coast. Kirkland uses Diamond. http://www.globalanimal.org/2012/05/17/pet-food-recall-salmonella-warning/74456/ That recall is what prompted the FDA report that's being discussed in this thread. The recalls discussed in that link actually began several weeks ago.
