RE: Not as young as we used to be.....

Air mattress - deflated after every trip is one option. I added 1-1/2" memory foam topper for my end and it's nice. Do have to be careful when lowering the roof and help the arched ridge pole down flatter (solution would be cut out an area from each side) and really push in the canvas (use a soft sponge mop for assistance).
My 'guest' bunk has a feather topper, and the light weights all say it's great.
Have added a fluffy quilt to that side under the mattress pad and that smooths it out a bit.

RE: Talk me into/out of full-timing

I don't see too many issues with the health declining. Both kids have said I'd have a place should I need it. I will have to set up something financially so they can't bleed me dry (who can kid about that). My youngest has the less abrasive personality, and has cared for me after prior surgeries. I do have to consider my travel desires - maybe if doctors approve, one trip around the country, then stick to the east coast. I believe I can plot out a travel timeline and work my appointments into it. My rheumatologist will write future bloodwork orders, so that's not an issue, and she will do phone interviews. My eldest can pickup the rx that can't be faxed, fill it and ship it to me.
Don't quite understand why folks feel the stick n brick to be mandatory with healh issues....anyone with insight to that?
Good Sam and others have Emergency Medical Assistance which might be something I will want to investigate further. I have ERS which is worth every penny.
I do have a cat (12 yrs old) and a pit bull who is about 1 yr old. At present, the dog is a bit too strong for me to handle, but if I blindfold her I might be okay with the control. The cat got munched years back and had 3 serious surgeries (didn't expect him to last this long), so anytime?? His recovery was in the bathroom with litterbox on one side, food/water on the other. In 7 or so years that cat has resided in that room - might not sleep in his wicker basket with pillow - he does a week or so in the sink, toilet lid (and does get down when someone enters the room and asks him to get down), tank lid, shower seat, shower floor. Don't know how well he'd travel.
An unfortunate issue will be division of the 'family heirlooms'.....lots of antiques, and family heritage. I've been in touch with a museum, but need some appraisals done - ug.
This is becomming an interesting proposal.....keep up the feedback.

RE: Talk me into/out of full-timing

Update: Just had a phone call from youngest....military spouse not re-upping, wants to do apprenticeship. Sell their house in NC and move back to MD and stay in one of my stick n bricks (all expenses they will take over) until they can buy a house up here (not happening - too expensive). This forces the youngest to help 'pack up' (go through) my possessions.....as they want their stuff in the house.....(we won't talk about the piano - concert grand).
I'm rather excited at the moment, but can't put all my cards in this basket. But with a little thought and all of your input, it just might happen. What's more is youngest says I will have a room in my own house should my health deteriorate and I cannot travel.
Whoo-who for today anyway.

RE: Talk me into/out of full-timing

Wow - thanks to each and every one of you for your input.
Not to get too personal with info, I've got a 1/2 ton PU, the Niagara (all amenities). I had/am considered(ing) trading in for a TT that I actually felt comfortable in. What really got me started in this vein is that my kids and I have been discussing my eventual demise, wills, probate, taxes (if any), etc. I am toying with the idea of disbursing my possessions NOW vs. at demise, and selling off the properties. I have a TT membership which would allow me to enjoy 3 weeks in a single location and go directly to another with no out time. Many of the TT parks allow for extended stay with the addition of metered electric. I do love to travel. I've discussed my health with my kids and one has a 'room with bath' for me in the event. I have not discussed my 'whim' totally as there will be some negativity from one who is highly into television and is not a traveler. I have planted a seed though - the division of my possessions. Come to the house with 'stickers with your name on them' and sticker whatever you want, as it will be less stressful to do it now than later.....
The thought is that when the time comes for me to be grounded, I will have a 'contract' with my kids so they won't nickle and dime me to death.
Again, thanks for the input and ideas.

RE: Thousand Trails / ROD break up

Thank you Happy Trails for clarifying the ROD issue. As a TT member, I too have saved the annual dues amount several times over in camping 50 or more nights a year. I do like the features/amenities of the TT parks and affiliates - security, sale of propane, etc., and pet friendly. I've yet to use my ROD membership, thus it expires this year. I have however enjoyed my RPI membership several times.

Glad you are joining us. An empty nester here too, who'd like to share the adventures with the grandkids.
Make your first camping trip either camp driveway or backyard and become familiar with your unit and comfortable.

RE: Insurance, Travel Club/Road Hazard & Extended Warranty??

Roadside Assistance - Good Sam ERS or Coachnet are nationwide. AAAPlus RV may not really be available nationwide - hear tell it's 'regional'.
As to extended warranties - your unit has a warranty as do the appliances. What would the extended warranty cover and it's cost. Most feel it's not worth the cost.
Discount Camping programs (annual for about $50) offer 50% discount on member campgrounds with restrictions. Before joining, check the campground lists and the restricted dates/times. (Passport America, CampClubUSA, Happy Campers to name a few).
Membership Camping (such as Coast-to-Coast, Thousand Trails) have various memberships, regional/nationwide, with some restrictions (ie., 14 days at a member campground then 7 days 'out' of the system). If interested, research thoroughly and BUY A USED MEMBERSHIP. Remember a membership is only good if you use it enough to offset the purchase price and annual dues/maintenance.
As to your insurance - the higher the deductible, the lower the premium. Granted your auto policy covers the camper being towed, but you might want to include it on your auto policy so if a tree branch falls on it in a campground or even your driveway.....it's covered.
There is alot of info in the 'sticky' portion of this forum.

RE: gettin' around?

You can get your doctors assistance for insurance purposes, just be sure to say the scooter is for getting around inside the house....as insurance doesn't care about outside mobility and won't pay.

Talk me into/out of full-timing

I'm a pop up camper owner at present, with 2 stick & bricks to maintain...iffy health and darned tired of paying bills/maintenance. Am seriously considering selling all, and utilizing my Thousand Trails membership.....
Toss out some reasons for me to do this or not do this....there are probably many pros/cons I haven't thought of.
Thanks from the heart/wallet.

RE: Cabin fever, new old stove and new hobby?

I have mny grandparents old 'picnic' kit in my tenting gear - the folding 'stove' that uses canned heat. These stoves are being made again, but the new ones are flimsy.

RE: Winchester Va Camping World

While they do carry good mdse., I was not at all impressed with their personnel, knowledgewise or attitude to a 'mere PUP owner'. The store itself was interesting - it had a door marked 'tornado shelter'.....first I'd ever seen here on the east coast.

RE: Salmon

I tried the 'steamer bags' for the microwave.....and am impressed. I simply lightly coated two salmon filets with butter and sprinkled with lemon pepper seasoning, steamed for about 4 minutes and yum - no clean up.
I've also steamed without seasoning, then served with wild rice/cream of mushroom soup mixture - also yummy.

RE: Any Atkins followers out there?

While I've read Atkins Cookbook, I'm more of a 'basics' cook/eater. I do things like pork chops in Cream of Mushroom Soup, Beef Stew (with more green veggies than potatoes), fish - baked, broiled, fried. And Chicken....
I do avoid bread, white flour products, pasta, rice, corn, carrots, limas (that kills me). I splurge on Green Beans, spinich, kale, etc. To jazz them up a bit, I sprinkle with lemon pepper dressing.

RE: eyeglasses & prescription drugs

I was impressed by Wal-marts prices on eye exams as well as their glasses. I have used their pharmacy for years, but delivery time became an issue at my local pharmacy/Walmart, so switched to Rite-Aid.
Most of my RX's get faxed from the doctors office to the pharmacy, which is nice as I can swing by and pick them up on the way home from my appt. Have not tried this with Walmart though so can't tell you whether it's effective.

RE: How to make a small septic tank.

As my PUP only has a 9 gal black tank, we trenched about 20 feet, about 3 - 4 ft deep (graded) with elbow and stand pipe to surface, and put pea gravel down, and a holey pipe, pea gravel on top and filled the remainder of the trench, and it works great. We used it for grey water mostly last year when living in the PUP while remodeling, but it handled the load with no problems.

RE: Beef tenderloins, need educated..

I buy the whole beef tenderloins at Sams Club, cut them into 1" steaks, then vacuum package them and freeze them. Sometimes I will marinade before freezing. Generally I broil or grill my steaks....depending upon the grill, it might be 8 minutes on first side, 3-5 on the other side for medium rare.
While I sometimes use commercial marinades, I still go back to Worchestershire sauce, garlic, onion powder and pepper.
I've tried wrapping a small tenderloin steak in bacon, secured with toothpick, but the steak itself doesn't seem to pick up the flavor, and darned if the bacon didn't char terribly. (that's just me)
Back before my mother died, she needed a 'high protein diet' and 'tenderloin' was the highest cut. I'd pre-broil the steak to very rare and take it to the hospital where I'd microwave it for 30-60 seconds to heat it to medium rare and it worked very well. Very tender and she could chew it.
The 'tiny end' of the tenderloin I will cut into small chunks and lightly pan fry for steak and eggs.
