RE: 1996 Roadtrek grey water tank leaking

You should be able to repair it, with some sort of epoxy patch material. You will proably have to scrap/rough sand the area to get the best adhesion. You may also be able to remove the tank, and have it "plastic welded", which would be the best way to go, but it will depend on your abilities and just how bad the leak actually is. I would go for a quick patch first......and if that doesn't work, then go for more drastic measures.

RE: Can I cut a hole in the side of a Journey

Just be sure you know where the wires are running.:H I want to do the same thing at the back of our MH, so I have easier access to the water pump and valves....getting too old to keep climbing under the rear bed. You can find the door assemblies on-line, in a variety of sizes and shapes. Not really all that expensive, but remember to "measure twice (maybe even thrice:B) and cut once!!":)

RE: Replacement for Radio, DVD, etc.

I'm pretty sure that you could go into BestBuy and find something that you like, and they will install it for you. Hopefully, whoever took out the old one, didn't destroy the wiring when they did it. You may need to get a custom dash plate to make whatever you decide on, fit properly. Our son had to do that with his Civic, but it looked great when they were done....and not very expensive either.:)

RE: I need advice on Propane Bottles

I'd just swap them out at one of those Blue Ox (or whatever it's called) places that they have at Home Depot. Cheaper than buying a new tank, and cheaper than having an old tank re-certified too. Especially a 20# bottle which is very common and easy to get. Now, if you had some sort of specialty bottle that fit your RV, then maybe I'd see which option was best. Happy Camping:)

RE: used motorhome tires

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'd be leary of buying used tires for a motorhome. You've got a pretty good investment there, and of course, there is the investment in the lives of the folks you have in the RV too. I like the idea that I will have a warranty (even if only implied) when I buy new tires, and while I may pay twice as much for that, it does help me sleep a bit better at night. Now, that isn't to say that I don't go and buy a used tire at a junkyard from time to time, but for the utility trailer, or for a spare on our son's "around town clunker"....where I'm not worried about being out on highway and having a tire failure. I would think that many shops may re-sell some of the tires...especially those that aren't over 8-9 years old, but still look good. Some RV folks will replace tires at 5-6 years...so they still have 2-3 good years in them, as far as I'm concerned (if they have low miles.)

RE: Traveling w/ a pet, check this out

It is such a shame that a dog that has such potential can also have such potential to give it's breed another black eye. I know several PitBulls that are just big babies, and are very gentle. Still, I don't know if I'd trust them with my grandson, or any of our small Papillons. I would guess that the Police Officer felt that HE had control over his dog, based on how the dog would behave with HIM....what the dog did when he wasn't there, is another story....and a tragic one at that. WE had a Pitbull-Lab mix...she was a sweetheart, and was good with our little dogs, but we never left her alone with them.....plus, she was quite old when we started getting the smaller dogs. Would I have another dog like Gidget? YES!! But I'd be nervous about most PitBulls in general. So sorry for the loss of this family's pet....a real shame:(

RE: Dumping my tanks ...

Ditto on not worrying about having the tank completely dry. You will dump the Black Tank first, then dump the Gray Water behind it, to flush the hose. Then, you'll end up adding water to the Black tank to make sure that there is something in there. Don't sweat the small stuff:)

RE: 1990 Ford E350 Van Rear axle seals. Easy to do?

"Easy to do" is a relative term. For someone with the tools and experience, it will be a lot easier than for the person who doesn't. Is it as easy as changing the oil.....probably a bit harder, but if the bolts come lose, you shouldn't have a problem. Get a copy of the schematic for the axle, or go tot he Library, and look at an older copy of Chiltons or Motors manuals....you can probably photocopy the pages that will show you the steps to do the job. Good luck:)

RE: Horrible Smells!

Have you made sure that you have water in the traps to the sinks and shower? That grey water tank can get pretty foul smelling. Other thought would be that the seal on the toilet is leaking, so you would want to store it with some water in it, to work as a air seal (like a trap). I don't care how much you clean your tanks, they will still stink, but your vent and the traps should keep the smell from getting into the RV. Speaking of which, have you chacked to make sure the tank vent is clear?? If it's plugged up, the fumes will work up through the toilet since that water isn't really a trap. I will also assume that you didn't leave an old pair of socks over in the corner:B

RE: Buying a MH - Advice for a newbie? Good decision?

You may want to talk with the previous owner, and if possible, the original owner, to see how they used it. As mentioned, low mileage may be a concern, but if they only drove it to a campsite 100 miles from home, the miles would stay low. Not everyone drives across country, or even out of their home state. I would also agree that you should check such things as tires, which should have been replaced by now, though with that low mileage, the previous owner may have skipped on that. Tires can be expensive, so figure that into your negotiations. Checking all the appliances, as well as looking for any signs of leakage in roof or windows. How many hours on the genset? Again, you are looking for something with a couple hundred hours, so that you can assume that it's been exercised each month. Since you were previously in a TT, you know most of the systems, since they are the same....which is a big help to you. Your concerns with the MH will be the drivetrain and engine....otherwise, it's just a TT you can drive.:B Good luck...

RE: more newbie questions

1) While packing/unpacking/preparing the camper we were thinking about putting it on our driveway but it would be under a pine tree. I know that sometimes this tree drops sap and didn't know if I should not park the trailer under it (or find somewhere else for it while packing, etc.). I didn't know what the sap would/might do to the roof. There are going to be plenty of times you are under trees, and sap or bird poop, or whatever will make it's way to your roof. There are products out there to help clean it off. You can minimize it, by only parking it for the time you need to load/unload it, but in reality, I wouldn't worry about it.:) 2) I know that tire pressure is a big issue and there are many posts/sites about it, but I checked my pressure this weekend and the sidewalls of the tires say 50PSI. javascript:; Am I to assume this is cold or should I give a little play (40-45) for increased pressure as they warm up? I'm leaning more toward 50 cold. Yes, that is the "cold" pressure. You should check the numbers that are listed on the RV, not the tires, since that is a general pressure. The RV weight may be different than what the tire mfgr expected. BEST, get the RV weighed when it's loaded the way you would travel, and then look up the inflation pressures for that weight. 3) For at least the first trip we'll have electric and water hookups, but for some later this year we may not and I was wondering when filling the fresh water tank (from our home spigot) what hose should I use? Our white hose we will use at the campsite isn't long enough to get to the spigot from either place we'd be able to park the TT, so is a "typical" garden hose okay in this situation?A lot of folks like to wait until they get to the CG before filling the tank (saves on weight, which improves mileage)...and most all CGs have some sort of water hook-up, even if not at the campsite. That said, if you want to use the garden hose, you can, but you want to be sure that it's clean. I think I'd want to invest in an extra "white" hose, or buy a new hose and "sanitize" it with some chlorine before use. Have a great trip!

RE: Pennsylvania Turnpike with a Class B

Most of the time, it's based on the number of axles, so your "B" would be the same as a mini-van or family sedan. Unless you've got some sort of tag axle, or duallys added to your RV (which I doubt), you'll be paying the regular rate. If you want, you could probably call the PA authority, and tell them you have a van. Happy Camping:)

RE: Water Heater Check Valves??

Not really needed, but you will want to install valves to take their place for winterizing. Figure out how you'll pipe it, and make sure you have access to the new valves. The check valves are there partly because it makes it easier to winterize....and helps make it more idiot proof.:)

RE: give w/d bars a tug to ensure they're set before leaving

Yeah, you want to make sure... I had my small utility trailer hooked to the back of our van one night, and drove down to HD for some lumber......stopped at a light, and BANG!! Appears that I hadn't checked to make sure the hitch was actually ON THE ball....Hey, it was dark!:S Fortunately, no damage, other than a dent in the storage box on the front of the trailer....but it's all fixed now.:) Always good to do a second check...and maybe use a flashlight when it's dark out:B Thanks:)

RE: Good Sam?

I would guess that you are referring to Good Sam. You'll see tons of ads for it both on this forum, and most places that are RV related. The offer a few things that may be of interest, and the annual membership isn't to expensive.....but you'll be overwhelmed with junk mail from them, once they know where you live:B If you join, they send out a magazine every month, and there are various contests, and discounts that you can use when you go camping. In my opinion, it's worth joining. They also offer Roadside Assistance, as well as a Warranty Program for RVs, which may be of interest to you. If you join, you'll also get a really neat little logo next to your name on this forum.....it makes it all worth while:B

RE: Down shifting with an automatic transmission

As long as you don't downshift when the transmission is going too fast. Slow down to what you feel is the low gear speed (say 10-15 mph) before you downshift, and you should be OK. When I was a youngster, the Driver's Ed. Teacher told us to almost come to a stop, then put the transmission into "1" (or "L") and then proceed down the hill.:) Another option is to work your brakes. The way I was told when driving a School Bus, is to push the brakes until you drop down to about 10 mph below the speed you want to be at....then release the brakes and let the speed come back up to the desired speed.....then apply the brakes again until you are down 10 mph. Do this all the way down the grade, and you won't burn your brakes or cause them to "fade" on you. Good Luck:)

RE: France, short trip to test our camper (lots of pics)

Amazing photos, of a beautiful trip. I was in Bordeaux about 40 years ago, and took a tour of the countryside.....beautiful. That is a very nice Camper you have, and it's great that it allows you to really get off the beaten track, to see those sights:) Thanks for sharing:)

RE: What would you do? Air conditioning question

is there really that big of a difference from the 13,500 BTU vs the 15,000 BTU. The easy answer would be, yes, 1,500 BTUs:B, but does that really answer your question? Probably not. Have you tried putting a thermometer at the two units, to see what kind of air temps you are getting from the two units? My first thought was that the unit up front may not be working very well, so you're not getting the cooling you expect...and that could still be the issue? If you paid for a 15,000 BTU unit, you should get one, so either they should replace it, or give you the difference between what you got and what you paid for. I think I'd be looking for the larger unit, if you feel that this one isn't doing the job. Also agree with the others, that a fan will make a HUGE difference in what you perceive in the temperature of the RV....the fans in the A/C unit aren't all that powerful, so it doesn't really circulate very well. Before you go and take the RV in for the replacement, you should double-check your invoice, to make sure that you were supposed to get a 15,000BTU unit. Just because you thought it should be, doesn't mean that is what you bought, or what is on the bill of sale....just saying. Good luck, and keep cool:)
