RE: new to camping

I take biscuit mix. I use mayonaise or large peanut butter jars to use as cannisters for sugar etc. I have some wonderful square metal cannisters but I can see how much of everything is left in the clear plastic jars. Macaroni, instant pancake mix and anything similar goes into the jars. I keep dried onions in the TT to use if I run out of real onions.

RE: How do you use your trailer?

It depends on the time of year. If the weather is cold or rainy we spend more time in the trailer than we do if the weather is nice or even halfway decent. We camped by a family in a MH for three days in Arches NP and never saw them. After three days they drove away. It could be that they were gone or out when we were gone but I think they spent all of there time inside. And I say family perhaps it was one person.

RE: Camping in Western USA -> Tent

We have done that kind of trip often leaving our TT at home for the 4-6 weeks. Check all of the NFs and BLMs in the areas you want to go to. Send for infomation from each state and see what your library has. Buy the books that look like they have good information. And ask each state for information on their state parks. We started out covering lots of states in two weeks to spending more time at each stop, seeing more and enjoying ourselves more.

RE: Where to get odd size sheets?

Years ago I ordered some sheets that someone here said were great. They were terrible. Now I place a sheet upside down on the mattress and pin up the slack down the side. I sew down that seam. I had some flannel sheets that I wanted to make bigger. To them I added a strip of flannel. Be sure you leave a little extra room so they are not too tight It takes minimal sewing skills. We have four buns, two are standard bunk size, two are longer. The fifth bed is a short queen. The bunks I can just fold under the extra and fasten with clips but I preffered to sew mine.

RE: Any large families camping?

When I mentioned packing each days clothes for children in Ziplock bags I should have mentioned that there are gallon and two gallon sized bags depending on the age of who you are packing for. I bought the two gallon sized bags about ten years ago at a store where everything cost a dollar. Most of them are still in good enough shape to keep using and the two gallon size hold adult clothes except for the jeans. They even hold the jeans if you are not packing a sweat shirt for that day.

RE: Upper Peninsula for First Timers

If you go to Mackinaw Island you can rent bikes there instead of taking your own on the ferry.

RE: Tent that looks like a VW microbus!!

I love it but I assume that a tent made for four really means a tent that will hold four people in mummy bags with room to sleep but not room to live.

RE: Ringtone halts NY Philharmonic performance

My husband tells people to turn off phones before weddings and funerals. There are often some people who think it does not apply to them. And what kind of person would carry on a whispered call at a funeral.

RE: Pollysystic Kidney Disease Problem

For those of us with Celiac Disease there is a Listserv that helps us with problems of what and where to eat, etc. I would bet that there are some for various kidney diseases also.

RE: Any large families camping?

Get some large Ziplock bags and put a days clothes for each child in a bag. It saves so much work when you do not have to sort thru clothes for each day.

RE: Anyone been to Copenhagen and/or Iceland?

When we go abroad we take some clothes that we do not plan on bringing back. That allows us room for whatever we buy.

RE: what to do for the mid-winter wanna go campin but cant blues

From Virginia and you cannot go camping in the winter. We go camping in the winter in Michigan. The local state park will plow out a site if it is necessary but this winter it would not be necessary so far. And if you have young children I apologize.

RE: Trying new foods

I am willing to try everything once. If it is something that sounds awful I go out of my way to try new foods. Twice is enough for anything. Because foods like pasta made me feel sick for 40 years I seldom eat them even tho I can now find kinds that do not make me sick. I do eat them when I am seved it as company but I have never been able to get over my feelings for most of those things. And do not want to ever have to try kidneys again. I hated liver the way my mother made it. I learned to make it so it does not taste like shoe leather and like it.

RE: Yellowstone area

There is a NF to the East of Yellowstone. Email them to see if they allow boondocking. Also check to see when the campgrounds are open. There are several campgrounds in Yellowstone without hookups that you do not need reservations for but they fill up fast. While we were there two years ago dozens of people were turned away because they were full in mid-September
