RE: Honda vs Yamaha

They are equal quality just pick a color.
x2 .. which do you like best, blue or red? I have 3 friends with Honda 3000 mounted on the rear rack of their 5er along with their ice chests. Pretty nice set up.
I think for the money 2 Honda 2000s are the better deal and you could run only one if that's all you need, very portable. On the other hand a 3000 mounted on the rear rack is a no hassle, only one thing to break and maintain deal .. also I think you can get remote for it. If the gen is going to be dedicated to the 5er I think I'd go with a red or blue 3000 .. however I'm not big on the 1800 used one you found.

RE: Towing a Toy Hauler

My 22 footer weighs 6350 (Cat scale) empty and guessing 8K - 8.5K loaded. Used to tow with a F250 diesel but now tow with a F150. It tows it just fine with no issues. The world won't stop spinning if you tow a smaller trailer with a 1/2 ton .. trust me.

RE: Pre-paid Cell

I have used straight talk for 2 years and have been pleased. Check 'em out on the net.
Straight talk
x2 I've had them for a little over a year after being held in a contract choke hold with ATT for 15 years. Customer service does suck but don't they all? I did find a Florida number for customer service and have a ladies ext there that can fix ANYTHING lol. If you use your phone much this is a really good way to go .. $30 for 1000 minutes per month .. Verizon towers.

RE: In your opinion who is first to the top?

Lots of interesting thoughts on this-
That said- if the OP's friend is considering a new Tundra why in the world would he not consider a slightly used diesel (certainly available at or below the price of a new Tundra) or better yet a brand new diesel. If you're pulling a 5500lb trailer why in the world would you need a diesel?
Not only will a newer diesel beat the Tundra in speed under load but it will do it in MPG, comfort, safety, longevity... My new gasser loses 2mpg to the diesel towing but makes up for it the other 95% of the time .. and we all know the price difference between gas and diesel. Oh, and it pulls my TH up the hills as fast or faster than my 7.3 did. Comfort? My F150 is way more comfortable than my F250 was.
If you want a new gas truck- well compare it to other new gas trucks and not 11 year old diesel trucks. He wasn't, the other forum people were.
Anyhow- who really cares what a 11 year old diesel truck will do against a Tundra? The old Ford wins because it is paid for, will go 400k miles, gets great mileage, does not require smog, gets cheap insurance and registration... and still is a great looking truck!I had to smog my 2002 7.3 .. Cheap registration? $368 Cheap insurance? Mine's not much different with the 2011
The only reason I keep after you diesel guys (and I used to be one too) is because for a lighter trailer you just don't HAVE to have a diesel to pull one and a gasser is really a better option for most of us. New gassers have come a long way and you would have to drive one to appreciate what I'm telling you. I can be going 10-15 mph, punch it and break my tires loose. You can call it horsepower or torque, my kid calls it "beast" lol. I'm not into racing up hills or beating my equipment so I can "win" .. but alot of times I probably could :B

I was not saying that my truck was better than yours. Happy Trails.
No worries, I didn't read that into your reply :) I'm not saying mine is better than yours either, just saying my new one works out way better for me than my old one. It sure won't haul oak firewood like my old one though ;)

RE: In your opinion who is first to the top?

I towed with a gasser before my 7.3. The gasser had more horse power than my current diesel but could not even come close to the pulling performance of the 7.3. I will admit that the gear ratio's were a little different but I don't think that it could make that much difference. I have never even rode in a Tundra but they are nice trucks.
I had a '02 7.3 before my current gasser. My butt dyno says my gasser would beat my old 7.3
My gasser was faster also. Just didn't have the pulling power.
My gasser gives up 105 lbs of torque to my old 7.3 but gains 115 hp, a 2,000 lb weight advantage, and better trans gearing (and more of them). Pulling my 8K+ TH from a standing start and pulling the same long grades as before my butt dyno says my V6 out pulls the 7.3. As for the "pass you at the gas station" boys I did lose 2mpg with the gasser when I'm towing which is about 5% of the time .. the other 95% of the time I get about 5 mpg better than my old 7.3. So is the gasser a better truck? It certainly is for me.

RE: In your opinion who is first to the top?

Engine displacement trumps and will be king of the hill. IMHO.
OK, let's test that theory! I'll pull a 6000lb load in a new Ram 2500 with a 5.7 Hemi (390HP), you can pull the same trailer with a 1987 Chevy C30 with a 454 (220HP). We can run them up, say, Donner Pass.
Don't worry, I'll wait for you at the top. I'll take that bet but i want to be driving my Ecoboost.. :)
Easy money Kevin :B

I installed an auto transfer switch because I boondock alot and use my Honda as well as my onboard gen. Now I don't have to go out in the morning to crank the Honda so I can make coffee, I just push the start button for the onboard :-)
I got mine from ebay

RE: Need help with Airlift bags on my Dodge

I had similar concerns when I installed my Firestone air bags a few years ago.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e22/dweikert/IMGP0006s.jpg
I asked Firestone support and their response was-
The lower bracket of the 2250 kit will only sit on the 4 points that contact the Axle tube. This is a design that has been proven to work very well over the 30+ years Firestone has been providing the Ride-Rite product. It allows for the lower bracket to grip the axle housing in return fighting the urge to rotate under axle wind-up. The 2250 kit for the Chevy 2500HD has been available since 2001 and we have not seen any issues with the lower bracket design.
Isn't the internet and this site great??!! Where else can you go on a Saturday afternoon and get excellent tech help like this?

RE: Need help with Airlift bags on my Dodge

Yea, they say you may need to bend the brake line, but I'm not too worried about that. That's a relatively easy fix. I'm more concerned about the sharp corners denting into the axle tubes.
I share your concerns. I have AirLift myself, but I'm not real impressed with that whole mounting set up on your truck. Seems they could have come up with something better. Hard to tell in the pics and you've probably already thought of it, but I'd make real sure those carriage bolts weren't able to chafe the brake lines

The pic I looked at showed the inboard carriage bolt going over the brake line .. maybe I'm looking at the wrong instruction guide?

RE: Need help with Airlift bags on my Dodge

I don't like the looks of that either, but I went to the Airlift site and looked at the mounting instructions and that's how it's supposed to be according to them. Like I said, I don't like it either. Maybe go ahead with your install since you want to finish up and only put the minimum air in the bags until you check with AirLift Monday .. that's what I'd do.
Like the stumper's, mine mounted on top of my spring pack .. different app though

RE: In your opinion who is first to the top?

I think the Tundra. I believe the Tundra's 6 speed will more than make up for the 7.3s not so big torque advantage. I'm pretty convinced that my ecoboost pulls my TH better than my 7.3 did.

RE: Review of 6.0 Gas eng in 2012 Chevy with 4.10 gears PIC add

It's not the semis that cause all the problem, it's the public that don't head the semis slow speeds. The public knows to look out for them...mostly. Been happening like that for nearly 100 years. The general public does not expect a brand new 3500HD and trailer to be going that slow up a hill, or on an on-ramp trying to merge for that matter. Happens ALOT here in Colorado from folks thinking that a max load at sea level is the same as a max load at elevation and end up getting rear ended or swiped from idiots not paying that much attention.
And yes, learned the trade on an 80k communications trailer on old 10k Ford 9000s(in the mountains). I get tired of the "the semis are doing it", so why can't I do it crowd. It's a pretty piss poor excuse for ill-preperation.
Mav
Not sure why I'm catching all this **** for saying the OPs truck is underrated and underpowered for the load. It's true, posted fact by Chevy.
So semis go slow but that's expected and OK .. been like that for years. But the OP's rig accelerates good in their opinion although you say it doesn't have the power to and is slow and dangerous because people see the new rig and expect it to be going faster. I've heard of exotics looking fast sitting still but never RVs :h I would gauge another vehicle's speed relative to mine by how fast I was overtaking it, not by "looks" .. but hey, I'm funny like that.
I'm weak at math, but you said you "learned the trade" with a 80K comm trailer pulled by a 10K truck .. umm, wouldn't that make you about 10K overweight?
