RE: Non Paying Jobs

It never ceases to amaze me what some parks "offer" to workampers. As long as parks find folks desperate enough to take those positions there is no incentive for them to change. We've stayed in parks where the person checking us in was NOT an RV'er. It inevitably turns out to be the one worst places we ever stayed and we mark the park as "never return" in our logbook. People who do not own an RV have no clue and provide some of the worst customer service in the industry.

RE: Routes in CA from Mojave to I-80

Construction is in progress on both East and West bound I-80 lanes heading from Sacramento to Reno. Single lane with some tight spots for wide vehicles. Summit on I-80 is 7239 feet. More construction in Reno on I-80 as well, went over there a few days ago and had to take a detour to hit 395 south. Traffic was backed up for about a mile.

RE: Texas motorhome vehicle inspection required?

We transferred registrations (both motorhome and toad) from out of state to TX and did it all by mail. We don't have safety inspections done until we actually return to Tx. IIRC, you have 3 days to get it done. Not sure what a green sheet is, wasn't required for our vehicles.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

Glad they made it over the summit in good shape. They still need to watch the weather, expecting very windy and wet conditions in the valley.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

Here in Marysville the wind is starting to pick up, skies are clear and sunny. The winds are expected to be on the increase today. Safe travels.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

Here's a snip from an email NOAA sent to local weather watchers today: KEY INFORMATION: A fairly strong weather system will be moving through Northern California Tuesday and Wednesday. Most significant will be the potentially high amounts of snowfall in the mountains and the chance for snow accumulations well down into the foothills. The strongest period of the storm is expected between late Tuesday night and midday on Wednesday. SYNOPSIS: The storm will begin with windy conditions developing on Tuesday then precipitation moving into the area by Tuesday afternoon, moving from north to south. Most locations in the Central Valley will have winds 15-30 mph sustained with gusts to 40 mph and will receive between 0.25 and 0.50 inches of rain. Some locations may have sustained winds to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph and precipitation up to 0.75 inches. In the mountains, winds are expected to be 25-45 mph sustained with gusts along the ridges up to 75 mph. Snow accumulations will be three feet or more at the highest elevations, with up to three feet at the trans-Sierra pass levels and a foot or more at the 5000 foot level. Four to eight inches of snow is expected between 2000 and 5000 feet with lesser amounts down to 1500 feet and flurries possible down to 1000 feet. These snowfall totals are highly dependent upon if the snow falls as fluffy or wet snow. If the snow is very wet then the amounts will be less but the snow will be dense. Snow showers should linger in the mountains through Wednesday and possibly into early Thursday. Travel over the Sierra's doesn't look favorable for the next few days.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

The main advantage of 174 is that it is normally below the snow line. If they are not comfortable with 20 out of Emigrant Gap then I would suggest 174 in Colfax over to Grass Valley. They say these approaching storms are cold storms from the North, so if they have snow in Colfax best bet would be continue on down 80 to Auburn, or Sacramento, they need to get below the snow line. Once they reach the valley 20 is an easy drive over to I-5.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

Thank you Kathy for continuing to post while were on the road, our proposed route was/is Casper to Rawlings, and I80. I'll check on the detour to i84 and back to i80 (thanks for the advice!) but were NOT planning to go through Sacramento. Were planning on hopping on 20 in CA near Cisco and heading through Yuba City toward the coast. Anyone else taken this route? Would it be better to take the long way around on the freeways through Sacramento and up 5 to 20? Not sure where you are now, but we do have some weather forecast for Monday thru Thursday (27Feb to 1Mar). Stop by my site, TravelingRVWx and note the special weather statement currently being issued by the NWS. Snow and wind are headed this way so caution is advised. You can check on any road conditions is California by calling 1-800-427-7623 or via the CalTrans website.

RE: MH or Fiver for FTer's

We went MH as we didn't want to have to use a big truck for daily driving. Initial investment 5er (and truck) vs. MH was insignificant. However, for someone who is full-timing, the storage space available in a MH vs. 5er is very significant. I've never seen a 5er that could store (and haul) everything we own. A raised rail basement is a necessity for full-timing in my opinion.

RE: Toilet Backs Up?

One of the better items I've purchased for the coach is a closet auger. Cost is below $20 depending on length required. I bought a 3' version for about $12. It is just long enough to use from the toilet to black tank, mine is not a straight dump from toilet to tank. I've also used it from the dump valves and it is just long enough to reach both gray and black tanks.

RE: Anyone have trouble parking with full wall slides?

Haven't had any issues with our super slide. We always watch when extending the slide to ensure we don't hit anything. We've always been able to park the coach so it is a non-issue. We avoid CG's that do not advertise as "big rig friendly". While it's no guarantee if they say they are, it's something to watch for when shopping for a place to stay.

RE: Norcold 1200 RIM Ice Maker

x2 on the defrost. Cleared my 'clicking' ice maker right up. x3. Sounds like it needs to be defrosted.

RE: Foscam FI8910W Wireless IP Camera

I purchased one of the Agasio A502W models and had many problems. Returned it once for newer firmware, then after a month the replacement died. I gave up and got my money back.

RE: Hatch to Deming

Took that route once...good road, scenic, no wind (but there were signs warning of wind conditions).

RE: Amazon Experence

I think Amazon could make a case for the HS Diploma Not having a hs diploma does not mean a person is illiterate or unqualified to do the job. Especially in the Campeforce community, many of us didn't finish in those days, some of us went on to highly successful careers. I don't know the exact reasons for the requirements but suspect it has something to do with federal laws on hiring. True, not having a diploma is no guarantee a person can read, they also have a pre-hire test to ensure a person is qualified. I doubt an illegal would be able to produce a valid high school diploma. Amazon may accept other documentation, would be worth asking them if a person really wanted to work there. We worked Coffeyville and had very little VTO. They could always find work for those who wanted to work. Everybody we know who worked Fernley lost money due to limited hours worked and having to pay for their utilities in the RV Parks.

RE: Monaco vs Tiffin

We purchased and have our rig serviced at DeMartini in Grass Valley. They know how to fix/maintain Monaco rigs and do it right the first time. We love our Monaco Diplomat SFT and have had very few problems with it over the past 4 years of living full-time on the road. We would like to sell our rig and find something smaller to use for summer workamping gigs.

RE: Amazon Experence

I think Amazon could make a case for the HS Diploma. A person has to be able to read the labels on the items as well as the scanner display to verify they have the correct item and quantity. When we worked there you also had to pass a test that verified you could correctly match labels on items.

RE: Is that all there is????

I see no jobs listed for Ohio on workamper.com as of today... Just looking at the January/February 2012 Workamper News Mag and it has Three Ohio Rv Parks with jobs listed. One of the ads is from the Ohio RV park that posted a Workamper job here. I found the magazine worthless...to get copy to the printer to mailboxes takes 2 or 3 months. Better to use the hotline if you want current results. ;)

RE: Amazon Experence

They can not ask for it anymore. Why not? I know when we worked for Amazon they required education proof under the guise of Homeland Security.

RE: newbie's first question

Same here. Rarely do we eat out. Much nicer to find a scenic place to pull over and make lunch.
