RE: windshield screen

recommendations on a windshield screen to keep heat out of motorhome when parked Prompt (www.rvsunscreen.com) is the company you want to look at. We've had ours for 6 years. I put them up by myself, no snaps, no ladders, etc. Barb X2 We have had ours for 7 years and the original suction cups, still work fine. If you want more insulation put some of the silver windshield material between the glass and the Prompt screen for more insulation, etc.

RE: TN, I-75 Southbound lane slidding off the mountain at MM143

We traveled the southbound crossover lane on March 26th and the northbound lane on April 23rd with no delays. I expect it will take quite awhile to repair so both lanes are back in operation. There were detours listed on TN website back in March for regular traffic and trucks w/wide loads. Glad I am not traveling that way until next March 2013.

RE: 1997 454 MPG

Good evening, I have a 1997 Fleetwood Flair with a 454. 30' Under normal circumstance (Speed Limit) (Not Towing) Does anyone know how many miles per gallon I should be getting? Or how should I check. Thanks in advance. Be Safe To check fuel mileage, fill tank, record odometer reading. Every time you fill the tank record the gallons filled and odometer reading subtract latest reading from when first filled and divide the difference in mileage traveled by the gallons added will give you the MPG of that tank. Do this over several tanks and this will give you the average for several tanks. Same for any motor vehicle.

RE: A thought while washing our coach

I hand wax my 38' 2003 DP MH twice a year, just finished the Spring wax in early March and will do it again in Late October. Probably why it looks like brand new. Many ask if it is a 2012 model. I have been using Collinite's #845 Insulator Wax for years http://www.collinite.com/automotive-wax/ on all of my vehicles, RV's and Classic Cars. Easiest and best protection of any paste wax I have ever used. I just sold two bottles to two of my MH friends during my trip to Murrells Inlet, SC. It makes the finish look like a mirror, assuming you have a good paint job to begin with.

RE: poorly done ad by Newell

Just noticed the back cover of the May issue of FMCA magazine. Newell always buys the back cover space. This month they show their coach driving down a beautiful country road in what appears to be the Swiss Alps. Only problen is they were too cheap to actually take a coach there for the photo shoot. Obvious photo shop picture. Newell, Cheesy. It appears to me, if you look close there is an American SUV beyond the drivers mirror in the background, so I doubt this is the Swiss Alps. I am sure there are plenty of scenes in the U.S. that this background could be found. Just because you have never been there does not mean it does not exist in the U.S. Because you cannot see the seams from the slides and the door is because of the angle of the shot and the camera lens used. Photo of the MH was shot with a blue/green background and then inserted with the background, just like they do making movies. IMO Newell makes one of the highest quality Motor Coach's available. If I hit the Powerball Jackpot, I might consider buying one, LOL.

RE: 2500 Burb towing?

We have a 2001 Chevy 2500 2WD Suburban w/8.1L 4:10 ratio towing a 1989 Avion 32'7" L. GVWR 8,550#(scaled wt. of 7600#), hitch dry wt. 760# using the O.E. receiver with Reese equalizer/sway bars. We used to avg. 9 mpg for our round trip to Myrtle Beach of 1500 miles. Too bad GM discontinued the 8.1L engine as it was the best for towing, IMO.

RE: Analysis of Class V Hitches?

My DP MH has a towing capacity of 10K. It has a Reese Class V Tow Beast hitch with a Max.Gross Trailer Wt. rating of 12K#, Wt. carrying ball mount and Max Tongue Wt. of 1200#. I have not had any problems or concerns with is since purchased on MH.

RE: Surge Guard vs Progressive

I have a Progressive EMS and it has saved me several times for low voltage. When I was researching both I found the Progressive had greater protection ratings than the competition.

RE: consignment selling class A gass rv

Before you consign your MH check with your Insurance company as many do not cover your MH is consigned at a Dealer, thus any damage incurred will not be covered.

RE: 17 south from Myrtle beach to James Island

I have driven it northbound several times in my MH and it is like any other high bridge. It is a piece of cake compared to the Mighty Mackinac Bridge in Upper Michigan. Traveled over that bridge towing our TT's for years, even walked it on Labor Day twice when they shut down the northbound lane for the Annual Labor Day walk, quite an experience.

RE: Wow... tire prices. And 16 vs 18 ply?

I installed 6 XZA3 275/80R/22.5 H rating Michelins 2 years ago for $3200 installed that were 30 days from date of production. FMCA has a program for Michelin tires for members that I have heard is a good price, from those that have used it. As mentioned Michelin is building a multi-$ Million plant in SC where they also have two other plants. South Carolina is becoming the Tire Capital of the U.S. I am not familiar with your XZ152M Coach Tires since most I see are the XZA2 series. I don't even see that tire listed on their RV Tire website? I wonder why none of the MH Mfg. use Remington Tires if they are so good and comparable to Michelins? I guess you get what you pay for.

RE: ros and cons of Tow Doly

Why does everyone keep saying dollys need plates? They don't.You mean license tags/plates? Some states require them for tow dollys and many don't(don't ask me which ones, cause I don't know, but some do). NYS does not require them on a dolly, but will sell them to you for your tow dolly if you are going to pass thru another state where they are required. If plates are not required for a dolly in your state they are not required in any State you pass through, as all State recognize your Home State licensing requirements, just like driver licenses for MH's. Used a dolly for 5 years with no problems, as our vehicle was FWD and could not be towed 4 down. Much less expensive they buying all of the equipment to tow 4 down and more versatile.

We just returned home from a 30 day vacation in our Class A DP with our 3 Basset Hounds and our Aust. Cattle Dog. No problems. Have been traveling with our dogs for years past in our TT's. Like AMX say's "Never leave Home without it (them)"

RE: Michelins.. ouch!

Tires have gone up a lot due to higher price for oil, etc. I bought my 6 Michelin XZA3 275/75R/22.5 H rating tires in August 2010 for $3200 with a date code of 30 days from date of installation. Replaced tires were 8+ years old with two having very slight cracks around the rims, so decided to replace before they failed and caused damage more then the new tires. If the voters don't get wise this November prices for everything will go higher, especially electric, with numerous coal fired generating plants being shut down. Have been very satisfied with my Michelins.

RE: Help with Picking Out A MH

OP, the 04 Beaver Patriot Thunder you are looking at has a tag axle and 7000+ lbs of CCC, more than enough for full time. Now the TS in the link above I would be concerned about the CCC. My 38'T.S. has a CCC of 5500# so I would suspect the 40' T.S. in the pictures is in that range. So what do you base your concern on?

RE: How do you sanitize tanks in spring?

This is the procedure I use, just finished it this week for our trip next week. I do this every Spring. RV Water System Sanitation 1.Prepare a solution of ¼ cup household liquid chorine bleach (5% sodium hypo chlorite) to one gallon of water for each 15 gallons of fresh water tank capacity (100 gallons).(Mix 6 separate gallons of water with ¼ cup in each gallon and run through water hose into tank in step 2 below). 2.Close drain valves and faucets and connect water pump to fresh water hose and siphon bleach into water tank. Disconnect water pump and complete filling water tank. 3.Open all faucets, shower hose, flush toilet, cycle icemaker until all lines are full and you can smell bleach. 4.Top off water tank and let stand for 3 hours. 5.Drain and flush the entire system with potable water, by opening all faucets, shower hose and flushing toilet. 6.Remove any lingering chorine taste or odor by preparing a solution by diluting a ¾ cup of baking soda in one gallon of scalding-hot tap water (the baking soda needs to be dissolved completely) and adding to tank. This is solution is based on a 100 gal. water tank. Siphon this mixture by using step 2 above. 7.Fill the tank and let stand over night. Drain and flush. The fresh water tank should be clean and sanitized.

RE: GM 8.1 fuel milage

I have a 2001 2500 Suburban 2wd with 8.1L 4:10 axle ratio and got 9+ mpg towing our 32' Avion that weighed 7600# towing at 70 mph. The city/highway was 12/14+ mpg.

RE: Increasing Class A Tow Capacity?

The towing capacity of a MH is determined by the Manufacturer based on braking, GVWR, hitch, frame Mfg. etc. You can make changes to your hitch, and reinforce the frame but the recognized towing capacity will not change. If the Mfg. states 5K that is the max. recommended towing capacity. Yes I know some try to upgrade the towing capacity on MH's and Pickup trucks but that does not change the legal rating for the tow vehicle. In the original post, the owner stated a 28,700 GCVWR , while ready to camp weight is close to 21,000 pounds, so what part of being able to tow 7,500 pounds is in question? If the owner is attaching a hitch to the Freightliner chassis, then the motorhome manufacture is not part of the equation anymore. Yet I can understand your concern that the Motorhome Manufacture might not have put on a frame extension rated at 7,500 pounds towing rating, that is why the owner needs to make sure the frame is up to the task. My guess is also the owner will take the whole RV to a scale once he has the trailer and jeep on it, then check the weight. If the rear axle is overloaded at that point, smart choices include moving heavy things forward, or into the trailer, so that the rear axle is not overloaded. The RV owner must realize that a 6,500 pound trailer will put at least 700 pounds on the hitch, and take away 100 - 300 pounds front the front axle. With a 1/2 pickup, taking away 300 pounds might matter, yet this size motorhome 500 pounds will not change the steering significantly. Fred. Travel Supreme listed Towing capacity of 10,000 GVWR w/Class IV hitch from the factory. As Spartan did not install the hitch. Mine has a Class V hitch installed from T.S. which contradicts your comment. Besides the MH Mfg. installs all of the options, equipment, etc. that determines the CCC of the unit which will vary from unit to unit based on different equipment, etc. Some are forgetting longer stopping distances with heavier weights from a difference of 5K towing capacity to 10K, the extra 5K will increase the distance considerably, regardless of the heavier hitch installed.
