RE: Castaways vs. Frontiertown

We have been to both and even with kids are going back to Castaways. The kids liked the water park at Frontiertown (of course .. what's not to like?? :) but they liked being able to swim at Castaways both at the beach and in the pools and the sites were bigger. Since it's newer things just seemed "nicer" ...we liked the back in sites - at Frontiertown there were people behind us and on both sides and some of them were loud and would walk through your site. Not the campground's fault - we just preferred a little more room at Castaways ...

RE: washington DC?

The zoo in DC is nice and it's FREE so that's always good - LOL! It is definitely worth a trip in my opinion but then again we don't have a good zoo near us so you might disagree. If your family is really into the history and sight seeing you'll have plenty to do in those 9 days - bring good walking shoes!! My daughters are 11 and 13 and while they really like some of that stuff we found 4 days enough and were ready to hit the beach. If you're into sports you may want to check into something like a baseball game if they are playing at home - the Nationals Stadium is right near a metro stop and the tickets were really reasonably priced- I think the night we went they had $5 seats - can't beat that! This last trip to DC we went to a professional women's basketball game which none of us had ever done before and that was fun ...lots to do for sure!!

RE: washington DC?

Also kicked around heading to OC or Assateggue Island for the last few days
We did this last summer - spent a few days in DC and stayed at Cherry Hill - can't beat the convenience of the bus stop right at the campground. The first night we took a Grey Line Tour that picked us up and dropped us off right there at the campground ....we left there and went to Castaways in Ocean City to relax and enjoy the beach :)

RE: RV Locations near DC

If you do a search on this forum you will find a lot of information about this - we stayed at Cherry Hill last summer and loved it. The first night there we set up the RV then took a night time bus tour of the city that left right from the campground:) Super convenient and a short bus ride to the metro so you can use that for transportation to sight see on your own ...

RE: Herkimer,NY Campgrounds?

Another vote for the Herkimer KOA. Have stayed there a number of times - the sites right on the water are nice but there are also some fairly large sites near the playground area that are nice. Bring tubes - you can float down the water on a nice day :)

RE: Association Island

It is beautiful (in the summer - LOL!) We live not too far away but have camped there with family. The pool isn't too big but is nice and they had some organized activities which were good including a dj at night. Definitely go into Sackets Harbor which is just a few minutes away - lots of history if you are into that and some cute stores and nice restaurants on the water. Take a drive to Alex Bay and tour Boldt Castle - really neat! If the weather is bad there is a small mall and lots of other shopping, restaurants, movies, etc in Watertown which isn't too far - maybe 30 minutes away. Lots of good fishing and boating in the area ....

RE: Niagara Falls Camping

There are a lot of posts in this forum about Niagara Falls if you do a search you can read them. We prefer Four Mile Creek - it's on the US side and you can park free downtown with your tag ..huge sites! The only downside if you travel with kids is there is no swimming there ...if you want to you can use the pool at Fort Niagara just down the road - you get into the park for free then pay a few dollars to swim. If you're not going in the summer it won't matter anyway :) There are some big, beautiful sites at Four Mile Creek!

RE: First time Camping in MD any suggestions?

Not sure how far you are from Ocean City but we've been to both Frontiertown and Castaways and they're both really nice and perfect if you have kids! We liked the sites better at Castaways but the water park is free if you are at Frontiertown :) They both have shuttles to the boardwalk and to Assateague which is great!

RE: Letchworth State Park

It's a beautiful campground - really scenic and lots of hiking trails. There is a pool but you have to drive to it from the camping area - things are really spread out! They have different loops for pets and non pets - some of the loops are closer to the playground area. There isn't a lot right nearby so stock up on groceries and things first and if you have bikes I would definitely bring them. I wrote down what loops we liked - I'll have to find that notebook ....

RE: Cherrystone Family Camping Resort

When you have a campground with 700 sites you got to expect the 2 pools and water park (which are gigantic) are going to have people in them. The sites are pretty tight but I dont think any tighter then any other fancy private campgrounds. That being said, we love the place!!!
I'm totally fine with all of that ...I expect people and smaller sites. It looked like a lot of great activities - what worried me a little were the reviews that said if it rains there were lots of septic problems and the ones that talked about crime in the campground. I try to take reviews with a grain of salt but those had me a little nervous :)

Cherrystone Family Camping Resort

We are considering this campground for a week's vacation this summer with our family (myself, dh, and two daughters ages 11 and 13) and my sister in law and her family - also two kids that age. It looks great on paper - lots of activities, fishing, beach, pools, etc. The recent reviews have me a little worried. Should I be?? Also, if you've been there - how close is the ocean from there? Thinking I'd want to spend at least a day there. If not this campground any other suggestions? We were considering Virginia Beach - kind of hate to go any further south than that - we are coming from the northern part of NY state. We have been to Ocean City, Maryland and love it and considered just going back again but kind of wanted to try something different. Thanks for any help! A lot of the great campgrounds we have tried and loved (Normandy Farms, Castaways, Frontiertown, etc) were recommended on this site!

RE: Parks Near Syracuse, NY

Green Lakes State Park is pretty nice and probably one of the closest to Syracuse. We like Brennan Beach but that is in Pulaski so a good 30 minutes or more away ...

RE: Camping near, but outside NYC

Thanks so much everyone. I really don't want to go to NYC and if I could just do a stop-over for about 8 hours, then be back on the road, I would
I'm with you :) We stayed at the KOA and took their bus tour into the city and really enjoyed it. It hit all the major highlights without the stress of figuring out where we were going ourselves. It was a full day of sight seeing but a lot of fun especially leaving the driving to someone else :)

RE: Cherryhill campground Washington DC

We were there this summer - great campground! It was nice to be able to take a tour right from there - the first night we did a Gray Line nighttime DC tour that dropped off and picked up right near our campsite. Super convenient if you are visiting DC! The metro is close by and you can take the bus or drive yourself there. Our kids enjoyed the pools when we'd get back from a day of sight seeing and we also ordered food from their cafe one night and it was really good. The people who work there can answer any of your questions and they are really helpful ...The campground itself is pretty spread out - our site was right behind the bus stop which was nice if you were tired from walking all day :) We had a little bit of a walk to the pool though from there so you kind of have to decide where you'd rather be closest to :)

RE: Association Island 1000 Islands Region

We've spent a few weekends there - it's really close to where we live. The campground is nice - the water front sites are beautiful but in my opinion way too expensive. They did seem to lower the price of the sites that are not on the water which was good. They have a swimming pool, tennis court, etc and some nights they had live entertainment. It's a beautiful setting when the weather is nice. If you like the outdoors you'd be in the right spot :) Sackets Harbor is very close with little shops, restaurants, etc. Alexandria Bay isn't that far and if you've never been you should take a boat tour to Boldt Castle - fun way to spend a day. Watertown is only probably 15 - 20 minutes and you can do any shopping there if you need to - larger grocery stores, mall, restaurants etc ...

RE: CG near Buffalo, NY?

Check our Four Mile Creek if you don't mind a little bit of a drive to Buffalo - it's just north of Niagara Falls - maybe that's too far for what you're looking for but it's a beautiful state park and reasonably priced ...good luck!

RE: sell or seasonal??

Any suggestions?????
Maybe try it for a month? I know we're thinking about it .. we found a campground with a montly rate not far from us - we have two daughters who are really involved in sports and July is busy - we may next summer try the month long stay and see how we like it.

RE: help finding kid friendly campgrounds in northeast area

Darien Lake has a campground attached to the amusement park ... they have a nice water park too which is fun for kids. If you go there for a few days and have longer check out Letchworth State Park - it's beautiful! lots of hiking and biking opportunities there ...

RE: Fall camping in NY state

We were in Lake George this weekend and drove home through Old Forge. the "color" is really not great this year :( I had read an article saying that it wouldn't be because of different weather factors and they were right. There were a few areas of nice red trees just before we hit Old Forge but not the beautiful colors we normally see in the Fall ...we have had some gorgeous sunny weather though so I guess we will have to be content with that this year :)

RE: Traveling on the East Coast

In the DC area I would recommend Cherry Hill RV Park ...the bus and tours leave right from the campground and if you choose to drive to the metro station it's an easy drive away with lots of parking. You can get day passes for the metro and get off and on as many times as you would like. The first night we got there we did a night time Gray Line Tour that picked us up and dropped us off right at the campground - so easy! The people there are very helpful and will answer any questions you have as to how to get to the sites you want to see ....it's a nice campground ....
