First trip out for 2012. Been here 3 other times before, so it's one of our favorites.. Can get hot after June... Mosquitoes are already out, so glad we were prepared for that! RE: Redneck Engineering RV Conversions

Gothcha! I didn't really pay that much attention to the actual 'author'... ;) But, yes, the 'Redneck Engineering' is what built this country IMO! :) Mitch

RE: Please wash your hands

16 pages and this is as 'bad' as any other debates that go on here, like... :R "How much can I tow?" "Running your fridge on propane while driving" "Where should your pet ride while traveling" "Use an RV cover or not" "Which WD hitch should I use" "Diesel or gas" "Made in China tires" "What size tote do I need?" "Awning straps or not" And many, many more... ;) I've seen individuals WAITING outside the door to either come in or go out of public restrooms so that someone else will open the door and they slip in behind them so they don't have to grab the door handle themselves... These same individuals then proceed to do their business and then NOT flush, for fear of touching the lever.... But, they will go right up to the sink and turn on the faucet to wash their hands... Okay, more and more public restrooms have the electronic sensor for turning on the water, but I still get a kick out of it, as I open the door, do my business, flush the toilet, turn on the faucet and rinse my hands, touch the paper towel dispenser to dry my hands and hold the door open for them as they follow me out! :B I'm always tempted to fake a sneeze or cough too!! Just to mess them some more!! ha, ha!! :p Okay, this is not a past time for me, nor do I go out and seek this kind of stuff out.... :S It's just observations I've made over the years and it's probably only happened a "handful" of times, but it's still funny all the same... Keep up the entertaining posts like this, as that's what keeps me occupied while at work wishing I could be camping!! :) :) Mitch

RE: Redneck Engineering RV Conversions

Actually, that Cadillac "MH" is pretty cool.. ;) Great job on your mods too! I like to change stuff too for what works for me and after 10 years with the same trailer, the wife is still coming up with projects for the trailer! :) Mitch

RE: Heavy duty shocks, super springs or both for truck?

Wow... Stardove, if you can provide some actual weights on your setup that show you are within any of your Tundras weight specs, I'll never, ever post to another 'weight' related post again.. ;) (It has to be ACTUAL weights too.. Not just brochure weights... ;) ) I'll even spot you #400 over GVWR and #200 over rear GAWR... That's because that's what I am running over on my F150 with a #5000 GVWR TT.. On the other hand, if you are satisfied with the 'new' towing experience after getting your hitch setup dialed in, I guess that says a lot too... I mean, I'm VERY satisfied with my trucks towing performance, even tho I'm over my trucks other weight ratings... I do wish you the best and safe travels. Mitch

RE: Cost of new Duramax

DW said to me the other day,"When are we getting a new truck?" Now that's a statement I'd like to hear! :) Mitch

RE: Nissan Armada Towing MPG

You've got between $50-$60,000 invested in a vehicle/RV and you are worried about $$ for gas??? Should have thought about that before getting: "2012 Keystone Hideout 31RBDS Unloaded Weight 7780 lbs. Carrying Capacity 1755 lbs. Gross Allowed Weight 9595 lbs" I get 10 mpg towing a #5000 TT.. If you get that, you just won the Lottery! ;) Good luck and ENJOY YOUR RIG! Don't fret about what it's going to cost you in gas.... If you do, you'll never enjoy it... ;) Mitch

RE: Tell Me about RV Covers

I'd have a very dirty and green trailer if I didn't cover it for the winter... It's parked under trees and my cover is a mess, but the trailer comes out as clean as when I parked it months before... Since it's surrounded by trees on one side and the house on the other, it's not exposed to the direct wind, so I've been good for over 8 years now with no rubbing damage or tears or whatnot.. My cover is an ADCO Aqua Shed I think the brand name is? Works great for me.. Other's, not so much by the sounds of it... Here it is when it was a lot cleaner... It's not this clean anymore! (the cover that is!) http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x358/MitchF150/covered.jpg Mitch

RE: LEVEL?

Man, you guys really make this a chore don't you?? :? I'm glad I don't have to go thru all of that to get the dang thing level... ;) This is just what works for me and been doing it this way for 10 years with the same TT.. I've got the original round bubble level they gave me as part of the 'starter kit' when I bought the TT 10 years ago.. Looks similar to this https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/public/CTQ4bRXc9UTclpNN5ke5Pyid7ODDCIQwam3jSHicZuzU3ggNBRG2sy3mRUd60sfUM9cyDDn2LsgEFPoOz7jhbudAx04yn5thno9iZTT29bK80VH4li6Ne4AXWdBbINixiK4OTPuUXJ97xS8I5uPrCLtr2cQdocW6tiiSOr6qqf_-N16Licp6ZMIsxl-VL2cosq7tTJnB0m_lEL9gVwt3q090FbQN2dhp-Y07pjoVBw I just place this on the tongue and it tells me side to side and front to back in one easy location. If it's more than a full bubble off, I know I need 1 set of boards under the low side tires. Then I unhitch and set the front to back. Set the corner jacks and call it good.. Works for me.. :) Mitch

RE: Tow Vehicle Question

In my experience with uneven road surfaces, what you are feeling between the seams of the road is just the nature of the beast when towing a trailer... Some adjusting on the tension on the chains will make a difference, but it will not totally eliminate the sensation either... Less tension will make the 'wave' motion further apart.. In other words, it'll make you seasick faster.. ;) More tension will make the 'wave' motion closer together.. In other words, it'll make you feel like you are going over a washboard.. For me and my wife, the 'more tension' option works best.. We actually got a little sea sick on the less tension setting.. ;) Good luck with it! Mitch

RE: GVWR of TH

Anything you put thru the doors of any trailer counts against it's GVWR. Mitch

RE: Do you use cell phones while backing into campsite?

I've found that looking at the trailer tires in the mirror or sticking your head out of the window and knowing where you want to put the trailer works the best for me... ;) As long as you can see the trailer tires, that's where the thing is going to go.. Sure, have the spotter watch out for obstructions and such, but for the most part, there should be no reason for someone to tell you that you need to go 'left or right' as you are backing up... Just watch the trailer tires... All my wife tells me once we get lined up, is where to stop in relation to where she wants the trailer door to open out on the site.. :) Sure, it takes practice, and you should have a pretty good idea of where you want to put the thing to begin with.. But, if using a 2 way radio or cell phones works for you, that's great too! :) Camp site entertainment is all a part of it too! :) Mitch

RE: WD hitch size

I've got #1000 WD bars for my #5000 GVWR TT... Seems just about right for me.. ;) I'd go higher with that rig if it was me.. :) Mitch

RE: Helper Springs - 2009 Dodge Ram 1500

When I got my helper springs, it was NOT just to tow the trailer.. It was so I could haul a bit more stuff in the bed and not be on the bump stops.. ;) I've had my Hellwig overload springs for 11 years and LOVE THEM! I didn't even own the trailer when I got them for the truck. http://i1177.photobucket.com/albums/x358/MitchF150/645-805-9984.jpg Just what works for me. :) Mitch

RE: Newbie - Shortlist of Supplies needed

That's all the help you get! :p Half the fun is finding out what works best for you. :W We are on our 10th camping season with this trailer and are still adding/subtracting stuff in the trailer! :h A lot has to do with the actual destination. We bring different stuff for different places.. When we go to the coast, we have to bring 'beach' stuff. When we go out in the boondocks, we have to bring 'hiking' stuff. When we go in between, we bring something else.. But, about the only thing we do say every time as we are leaving.. "Well, if we forgot anything, we'll just have to buy it or remember to bring it next time!" Don't fret it and just GO and have FUN! :) You are covered for just about all the basics.. The rest is just being spoiled! ;) Mitch

RE: Newbie - Shortlist of Supplies needed

I'd swap the pavers for some 2x8x18 scrape lumber for the leveling jacks.. A lot lighter and easier to haul around. Might want to make up several more of them for placing under the trailer tires to help level side to side if needed. Alternatively, lots of folks swear by those plastic 'Lego' blocks.. They come in a handy little bag and weigh less than the lumber.. ;) Some form of level. The rig might already have it's own levels on the corners, but a basic level is all that's really needed. I use a simple $2 round bubble level and place it on the hitch. It checks side to side and front to back in a single placement. Easy! Gloves for handling the hitch stuff. I like the 'blue rubber' type of gloves. If you are really concerned about the sewer line and stuff, folks like to get a box of the disposable rubber gloves. There is probably a bunch of other stuff that I take, but that's taken years of saying "I wish I had this..". Good luck and have fun! Mitch

RE: Do I need Brake Control Harness- new setup

Your '12 Ford does not have the built in brake controller setup? That seems odd with the "HD Tow Package" on the window sticker? Maybe it's still an additional option? Not sure why you had to give up the brake controller you already had with the Durango in the trade?? I would have also asked for a credit on the remaining gas in the tank! :) If you do need to get a new controller, like was said above.. Get the harness specific for your rig and it'll simply plug and play.. From there it's just a matter of mounting it. Good luck! Mitch

Thanks for the clarification Marty. Looks like I'm good to #8000 with my current tags, regardless of what my trucks GVWR is.. ;) Mitch
