RE: Breakaway cable

GREAT POST !!! SolidAxleDurango writes "I don't use a cable at all." Hmm... stirring the pot are we? In many states it is the law to have a properly working emergency breakaway system on ANY trailer which has a GVW of 3,000 lbs, period. 3,000 lbs GVW is also the Federal law to boot but some states are more stringent and may require it on 2,000 lbs GVW. That cable IS part of the breakaway and must be secured to the TV any place other than the hitch. It is not a joke and should not be joked about. So the ONLY way you can get away from using that cable is if you have a trailer UNDER 3,000 lbs GVW or you are using a TC (Truck Camper). Your breakaway system MUST also have a battery on board of the trailer and it must be capable of not only stopping the trailer but holding it for at least 10 minutes. As far as buying replacement cables, they are out there but it is easier to buy a new switch which will have a new cable. Keep the switch as a spare, they DO go bad and you need to check the function of the switch and your brakes every time you start a trip. Doing so may prevent deaths of other motorist. Solidaxle, as a side note, PA takes a very strict view of towing safety. A few years back an entire FAMILY including kids was killed near Pittsburgh by a 2,000 lb chipper which was improperly secured to the truck (safety chains were not attached and the hitch was not LOCKED via a pin). In PA, they CAN pull you over and not only issue you citations for any safety violations but they can impound your entire rig. You have safety items on most RVs, use them properly and check them often for correct operation.

RE: Where to RV Camp near Washington, DC?

Cherry Hill Cg...close to Metro. :) X2 We just stayed there th first week of April and this place is great and the Metrobus comes right to the campground that takes you to th Metrotrain station. Very easy to use. We had a great time and would stay at Cherry Hill Park again.

RE: Castaways vs. Frontiertown

If you have kids stick with Frontiertown, if no kids consider Castaways. We prefer Castaways because the Club Castaway area is super nice and has its own pool and very close to the crabbing piers. Castaways had two pools. I remember when Castaways was Eagles Nest, that place was a dive and I do not mean the swimming pool. Castaway’s is so much nicer. But if you have kids under age 16 they will miss Frontiertown and the water park.

Tongue Jack Diameter ?

Need some help for a friend. Anyone know what diameter tongue jack to get for a Forest River 2009 Grey Wolf hybrid (18 T I think is the model)? Would it take 2 inch or 2 1/4 inch diameter? I am suggesting to him he goes with the largest capacity he can find for the best price, possibly even a 3500 lb that way he can move it to another TT if they upgrade. I am just not sure on the diameter for a hybrid. Thanks

RE: Outside Kitchen fridge ?

I would keep it open if you can, see if it came with one of those little blue clips that helps keep it from going shut. Also, try a box of the fridge baking soda to keep it fresh smelling, that works for me.

RE: Here is my Dilemma Rockwood vs Outback

During our comparison for a new TT in 2008 we narrowed it down to Keystone (Outback or Laredo) and the Forest River line of Rockwood or Flagstaff. We also looked at Jayco. We thought the Keystone quality was not as good at Forest River or Jayco. Check the Forest River Forum for more info from owners of the model you look at.

RE: What are features to a well built TT?

My suggestion would be you find a floor plan you like and is functional first. Then look for a dealer that is close to your home and provides good service after the sale. You will most likely have minor problems, but a good dealer can make that painless. Ask about the warranty, consider an extended warranty if the price meets your budget. With proper routine maintenance and care from both the owner and the dealer you can make them last for years. Keep reading and asking questions on this board from other owners of the model you choose. Good luck and happy camping.

U.S. Highway 29 in MD

Looking for an alternate route to avoid some of I-95 and the Baltimore Beltway on our way to Cherry Hill Park from PA. Looking at getting on I-70 then taking US 29 south to Cherry Hill Road. From my map program looks like a good alternate. We will be traveling early on a Sunday morning so traffic should be light. Anyone have any good/bad info on US 29 ? Thanks.

RE: Finally Pulled The Plug

Congrats. 2014 here! X2 for me 2014 will give me 32 years in the Fire Dept plus my 4 years military. 36 is a nice number. Just knowing that you can retire helps to deal with all the problems at work. Once again congrats to all of you that have "Pulled the Plug" happy camping !!!

RE: Outer Banks, NC

With this size of your FW I would highly recommend Camp Hatteras. The sites are the largest on the banks. They have great amenities; nice pool, nice ramp over the dune to the beach, WiFi was great and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Only downside is the price, they are one of the more expensive in the area. We liked Ocean Waves but the sites were very small and the pool was not all that great.

RE: WHEN SHOPPING FOR A TRAVEL TRAILER......

1. Find a floorplan that you like 2. Find a manufacturer that you like 3. Find a dealer that has the combo at the right price and level of convenience you desire X2 well said.

Need Painting Tips

Thinking about re-painting the tri-steps ( 2 sets) on our TT and looking for tips. Type of paint? Gloss/flat? Brush or spray bomb? Looks like the steps remove with 4 bolts that mount to the TT frame, anyone ever do this? Thinking it would make a neater job with less risk of overspray. Only problem I can think of is handling them once they are off the TT. Might be easier to tape and paint in place. Need to paint the tongue/hitch area also. Thanks.

RE: Barker VIP3500 24"

I just checked mine. It extends less than 6" below the frame when retracted, which leaves it over 18" off the ground. WOW thats great thank you. I assume you like the Barker 3500 VIP with the 24" post? I think this is the way to go, thanks again.

Barker VIP3500 24"

Anyone know if this power jack retracts up high enough to not have to worry about the plate contacting the ground when going over dips or bumps? I have always had the 18” and wondered if the shaft is longer on the 24” that might cause a problem. Thank you.

RE: How Much Snow Is Too Much ?

I agree with SabreCanuck, you will do more damage trying to remove the snow or ice. I made this mistake only one time and broke through the rear vent cover. Then we had snow on the bed. This was a mess. Remember to keep the TT tilted (always a debate which way) and rely on the melting on sunny days to lighten the load.
