RE: Poor quality construction

I've never understood the fascination with the Amish and their woodworking "skills". Why is it that people consider that members of an 18th century religious cult who eschew technology, public service, and education for their children should be lauded for their woodwork? Watch the documentary "Devil's Playground" some time; it's the story of young Amish who are released from the "faith" during their "Rumpspringa". It follows a group of young Amish in Northern Indiana who drink, party all night and do drugs....then go to work each day at the RV factory.

RE: Where are you workkamping this summer?

We'll be teaching the "Junior Rangers" at Humbug Mountain SP on the Oregon Coast. That of course is in between fishing, clamming, and picking huckleberries!

RE: Roof versus Basement A/C Units.

My 40' DP has four slides....I wonder what that big box in the right rear is? It sure works like an air conditioner!

RE: Stainless Steel Connector Drinking Water Hose

You'll be ahead in the long run if you buy your hoses from the RV Water Filter Store. Very high quality, stainless fitting, and 110 PSI. More expensive up front, but we've had ours for six years and they look like new. http://www.rvwaterfilterstore.com/index.htm

RE: Banking while on the road

Since we prefer to roam the West, we've used Wells Fargo for our seven years of full timing, and do everything via the internet. The customer service has always been exceptional, and being retired military they have perks such as no ATM fees for other banks.

RE: Roof versus Basement A/C Units.

There are a lot of variables involved - is the roof air ducted? Dual zone? Newer type with intake vents in the ceiling? Is the basement air under the bed? Or in the rear corner? I've had all types in my eight RVs over the years, and if given the choice between a newer style ducted roof or newer basement air would take either. I currently have basement air and have never had a problem with it keeping the coach cool no matter how high the temperatures. I particularly like the fact that I can buy an allergen-type filter at any hardware or big-box store. As for maintenance, I downloaded the factory manual; if I need repairs I'm confident that I can call any residential A/C maintenance shop, and it will probably be cheaper than an "RV" specialist. In any case, roof or basement a/c would not be a deal breaker on purchasing an RV.

RE: What do full timers do to NOT become bored with life style

During our working lives, we were always interested in nature but never had the time to do anything about it. Now, after seven years of full timing, we've become amateur naturalists and teachers. We volunteer at US F&W or state parks as interpretive hosts. We've spent a summer telling people about the history of fisheries in the West, another leading tours of a wildlife refuge, and teaching the "Junior Rangers" about the nature around them. We don't volunteer all year, only during the summer, and we pick a place that we want to explore. Last year it was the Black Hills, this year the Southern Oregon Coast. We've learned so much, and made so many lifelong friends.....how could we ever get bored?

RE: How did you start fulltiming?

Three months before retirement we ordered the motor home, and started the process of downsizing. We started with the big stuff that we didn't need any day and put ads in the paper and online. Within one month of delivery (we were Ohio residents), we drove to Sioux Falls, SD, spent the night, and the next morning obtained our driver's licenses, voter's registration, and set up our banking. When the motor home was delivered, we sent the paperwork to our SD mail service and saved over $4K in Ohio vs SD sales/excise tax. The last month was the busiest, yard sales, trips to Goodwill, packing the family keepsakes for our daughter, and having charities come and pick up the rest. One day after retirement we hit the road, in Dec '05. Our only regret is that we didn't start sooner!

RE: Splendide lint question

As full timers, we use our Splendide almost every day, and at least every three months I remove the outside vent cover, stick my arm in and clean out the vent tube. In a Splendide, the lint is blown out, and once the lint has a chance to adhere to the inside of the vent tube, it will build up in a hurry. The filter on the lower right is only for debris that gets caught in the water pump, such as coins, pins, etc. I check mine every year or so, but have never found anything.

RE: Sun covers for tires

This is a question that gets bandied about often on this forum. Personally, as a full timer, I don't use 'em. I spray Aerospace Formula 303 on the tires once a month or so, and my current tires are seven years old and have no checking/cracks. Yes, tire manufactures say to use them, what do you expect them to say? Don't use them? And incur the wrath of cover manufacturers? Why, out of all of the types of vehicles on the road today, do you only see tire covers on RVs? Because we owners will buy almost anything if we think it will protect our investment! If your MH sits for six months I guess they'd be OK, and they're very good at attracting spiders which keeps the ants down.....But for me, I'm facing life uncovered.

RE: Top Three!

1. Do something to stay mentally and physically active. We volunteer for a few months each year as interpretive hosts; we learn new subjects, learn about a new area, and always make lifelong friends. 2. As said before, it's a lifestyle, so pace yourself. Don't be in a hurry, there's plenty of time. 3. Downsize - scan all your important documents, do all your banking electronically, get rid of paper mailings, and once every six months go through your "stuff" and get rid of what you haven't used.

RE: How much do you pay for Kuerig Kcups?

We've been using coffeegiant.com They have a large variety, and if you buy six boxes or more shipping is free. We usually receive our coffee within five days.

RE: Winnebago Factory Defect

"If this happens while the motorcoach is in motion at 55 MPH a piece could fly off and cause possible injury or death to someone following" Yeah, and if you don't check your A/C shroud it could come off too.....or the dish, or the antennae, etc. I've never heard of an entire roof or a part of the roof separating from the roof itself and flying off, and I doubt it could happen. I'm not a fan of the Winnebago roof design (I sealed mine with Eternabond), but after seven other brands of RVs, I'm quite happy in my Itasca motor home, and I've lived in it 24/7. There isn't a motorhome out there that doesn't have some type of problem, but it's nonsense to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

RE: norcold failures vs. slideouts

Seven years of full-timing with a Norcold 1200 in the slide - not one problem. Sometimes it's easier to think there will be a problem when in reality there isn't one.

RE: Extended Warranty. Should I?

I'm a full timer and don't believe in the warranty programs for motor homes. It's insurance, nothing more, and the companies that offer the plans aren't in it to lose money. As mentioned previously, I also cannot put the coach in the backyard since it's my home. But I'll use a credit card or savings rather than sit around and wait until the warranty company approves the fix to my problem, and I'll shop around for the best fix, not just a dealership that will accept the warranty work. In the end, who do you think will get their work done first? The guy with the money in hand or the one with the extended warranty?

RE: Mileage on sealed fan hub bearing

Mine failed at 28K miles, so you're doing well. If you do decide to replace it, I concur that it would be a good time to do all of the other work, including a good cleaning of the CAC/Fan. Some threads on the subject suggest that the serpentine belt length may be a problem, so make sure you get the correct replacement for your model; Winnebago, not Cat put in on so check with them. BTW, my failure ended up costing $2800 (mostly labor); fortunately I was still under warranty.

RE: Tire Monitoring Systems

My MX-5 has internal sensors and I use a TPM system (Tire Traker). No problem at all.

RE: Cat C-7 Fan Hub Shot Again

Mine failed at 28K miles, just under the warranty. I expect it to fail again, not because of pulley tension, belt alignment, or any other reason other than poor design. When it does, I'll be writing CAT and fighting for reimbursement for a badly engineered part.

RE: Looking for a Compact Carpet Cleaner machine for RV

I carry a Little Green Machine also, but I got tired of getting on hands & knees to clean the carpet with it. I went to Lowe's and bought a Bissell carpet cleaner. It's a smaller model but has a beater brush, and removing two screws lets it break down into a small package for storage. It works really well, particularly in extracting the water. I don't have the model number, but it sells for under $100.

RE: Propane on or off

Part of our pre-departure checklist is "propane off", "inverter on". I'm fortunate in that I have an electronic on/off switch in the coach for the propane, so it's an easy task. After all the fires in Norcold refers, I never use the propane setting, although I realize that fires are still possible (I installed a auto-discharge halon extinguisher in the refer bay). Besides, this way I don't have to remember to turn it off when refueling.
