RE: Weekend TC plans?

Wifey and eldest daughter already have taken a couple of trips. My daughter is on the high school equestrian team and they stay at the event in the camper. I get to stay home and make sure the other two make it to school.

RE: Camper realities for family of 5

When my kids were younger we had no problem getting all 5 in the camper. But now the older two are near full size it is way to tight to try and sleep in the camper. We've bought a larger dome tent and the girls (the older two) sleep in the tent. We bought collapsible cots for both and good sleeping bags so they are comfortable and warm in the tent. They like being able to get away from little brother. It also keeps us from needing to set up the dinette every night and take it back down in the morning. The problem we have now is that they are starting to get crowded in the back seat. I'm not particularly comfortable with them riding in the camper.

RE: 4WD vs AWD

The 70's era trucks with NP203 transfer cases do meet the commonly accepted definition of AWD.

RE: Why is the "Mystery Campsite" thread closed...?

They better not be titling a page "Camper Mod Page" or Affinity can sue them :B What a bunch of wankers. I bet it riles them up even more that they are the #3 hit on google if you search the term Mystery Campsite.

RE: 6v versus 12v

An apples-to-apples comparison always means comparing true deep cycle 6V batteries to true deep cycle 12V batteries of the same chemistry ... very difficult to do, though. Actually it is. Just compare a pair of SCS225 and T-105 batteries against each other. Either bank will perform quite comparably. The difference is that a SCS225 runs around $180 each and a T-105 runs around $110 each. The SCS225 is a very good battery. I have in the stock location in my camper plus a T-105 pair stashed under the dinette.

RE: 6v versus 12v

Being 6V vs 12V isn't where the advantage is from. It is about the cost advantage you get from buying a very high volume high quality battery when you buy a golf cart battery. There are cheap "deep cycle" 12V batteries aren't very good. The worst are the "marine" batteries that are marginally better than a starting battery. Very good 12V batteries are rather expensive. This is because the volume isn't high and that results in high cost. The advantage of 6V batteries is that they golf cart batteries must be good because the primary customers demand high quality. Golf courses would blacklist any golf cart battery brand that didn't last. The high volume used by the golf courses results in good prices for the batteries.

RE: Connecting hitch extension to camper bumper

After backing into a tree one night and having to re-attach the bumper back to my camper, I'd never do it. I'd also never hang any kind of weight of the bumper. If you need something solid, consider attaching to the camper jacks. The are far better anchored into the camper.

RE: Why I'm not working... where are you?

My eyes aren't what they used to be. Is that a topless beach? Nope. But it is at enough distance that a photoshop would be easy :B

RE: Why I'm not working... where are you?

thank you... I was never unemployeed for even one day from the age of 17 when I graduated high school until my 65th year...usually having income from a couple of jobs... and paid SSA on every penny earned. I'm close so far. I did have 3 or 4 day work weeks for most of 2009. Plus wifey got laid off, so it was a tight and stressful year. Thankfully that's in the past. In my early years we'd pay out SS by March... with a lot of overtime in a chemical plant. Many of the SS recipitants died in there 50's If people didn't live so long now there would be no need for rates being high enough to require year around collection Well you just have to earn $106k by March nowadays and you can quit paying in :B One thing for sure, your turn to collect SS will be here much quicker than you can imagine... life flies by, even when you are having the time of your life. I hope so. Nearly all of the elder generation in my family lived near or past 100. My parents generation isn't doing as good.

RE: Flat towing versus trailering, advantages/disadvantages?

The biggy is you can back up. I hope I won't have to ever go back to towing four down. http://www.johnandangela.ca/images/smartcar/Towing%20setup/IMG_0430.jpg What's with the axle being so far back? That trailer must have about 50% tongue weight.

RE: Loading on to a SRW vs a DRW?

One of them was not building pressure the other day! But strangely the next day seemed ok? But I'm sure that means its going bad! :S Any ideas on price? It is one of the check valves leaking from a flake of dirt in the seat. Open the valve up and pump the handles briskly a few times and that will usually clear it.

RE: 4 ft extension

Only thing I would improve would be to add flat plate gussets, top and bottom of the center connector piece, welded along each side of the center tube and along each inside of the side tubes. Good idea, I wish I'd thought of that. It took a really long time to build up the weld in the area inside. Had I put top and bottom plates on, I could have just run a bead around and been done with it. It would have probably been about the same time to do, but a lot stronger.

RE: WOOHOO no more airbags!!!!

There is no other way to re-level your truck when you put the camper on. So what ya gona do with your bright lights shining in the face of the guy coming down the road. My truck drops about 1-1/2" from empty to the camper on with a 4,200lb camper. I'm a long ways from shining my headlights at someone coming down the road.

RE: WOOHOO no more airbags!!!!

The original owner of my truck put heavy springs just like that on the truck. I really like them. About 1" of sag and the heavy springs kick in. About the only problem is if I have about 1,500 lbs in the bed. That puts it right on the edge of the extra springs and they will slap on bumps. With the camper on it is a nice smooth ride.

RE: 4 ft extension

Here is what I fabricated: http://i4.tinypic.com/505tc9s.jpg http://i14.tinypic.com/4v4ep8y.jpg http://i5.tinypic.com/549dbmu.jpg I feel very confident in its design. A superhitch relies on the cross tube to carry the weight from the extension to the frame. That is the weak link by a large margin. I instead took the weight to directly under the frame. With 2,000 lbs of tongue weight on it, the sag is about 1/4". I'm measuring from the camper bumper to the extension top. A superhitch sags more under load. Installation and removal is a snap since the heaviest part is 34 lbs.

RE: Do airbags shift payload forward?

Even if the front bumper does drop, that doesn't mean more weight up front. Raising the rear will mean the truck is pivoting about the front axle. Even if the springs didn't drop one bit, the bumper would drop some. Better would be to measure right at the axle. Best would be to park the front of the truck on a scale and measure the weight difference between full and empty.

RE: Loading on to a SRW vs a DRW?

http://www.towshop.com/store/pc/catalog/hijackerbrackets_silver_2_1155_detail.jpg http://www.towshop.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=435 P.S. On the Hijackers the part welded to the center section is the end ya bolt to your camper ;). I also center drilled mine and added an additional bolt hole on the side that bolts to the camper I did the same (added another hole). I had a jack slide off my blocking and sink into the dirt when it was sitting in a field and it bent up the jack bracket pretty good. It scared the heck out of me, but I was able to use my truck jack and some wood to support the tub of the camper until I could get the jacks back on the blocking. The problem is that there is little strength in the side plate after the weld. That's a whole lot of weight sitting on a 1/4" think 2" wide piece of steel. I added holes in line with the welds and added two more bolts to attach it to the camper's brackets.
