RE: What do you use?

We hope to start fulltiming next April. I have some general questions if you don't mind.
1. How do you get your tv signal. I've heard that satellite is the best. Direct tv or Dish? Do you use a roof mounted dish, dish and tripod, or one of the portable units that you can put on the picnic table and it finds the signal for you.($699 to 799.)
2. Internet service. We tried a mifi unit, but it only allowed 3mgb fo $50.00, pretty expensive and service was sketchy(ATT). We use the internet to pay bills and stream Netflix. What other internet services do you use?
3. Mail service. How do you get your mail?
4. Is it really necessary to change your state of residence.i.e. North Dakota i"ve heard is popular. We are from Kentucky, our state taxes are minimal.
5. Car insurance? Do you have to do something different? If we keep our residence in KY, is it necessary to change?
I'm sure I have many more questions, please be patient with us. Your help has been great. Thanks Bob
1. DVD player
2. Aircard my work requires I have cell coverage so I have to stay in areas with Cell service.
3. My Dakota Address Mail forwarding service send us our mail to where we are.
4. No but it was good for me tax wise.
5. Yes we had to get an insurance agent in South Dakota. Because our primary insurer was not licensed in South Dakota.

RE: Weight Station - First time

I beleive it was last year when they changed the signs at the scales in Maryland to read thet ALL vehicles over 5 ton gross weight must enter scales.
So before everyone started to pile on me about DOT and commercial vehicles, blah, blah, blah, I went to the Maryland DOT website, searched for topics about scales and came up with this little snippet of information:
8. What vehicles must go through weigh stations in Maryland?
All vehicles with a gross vehicle weight or gross vehicle weight rating of greater than 10,000 pounds must stop at open weigh stations. Only vehicles that are operating in commerce will be subject to a safety inspection.
That being said, I choose to ignore the weight stations and have not been chased down yet.
What does that mean? I don't know. I'm just saying.....
We called on this one. The guy said "Don't worry about it." Then called back latter to tell the wife "We're not enforcing it against RV's at this time but technically you are required to go through." So yes in Maryland I do go through the weigh stations.
In fact crossing into VA the signage was unclear and we went through the weigh station.
So yeah if the sign is "all trucks and trailers" then I'd likely go through. The tickets in some states for skipping them can be high and states are looking for new revenue sources.

We called heading into the Cabela's cause the Brideandjoy is like that we were told to dump and go or feel free to stop in. We went in had lunch (bad bad choice) picked up some things for the Brideandjoy's new hobby and headed down the road no fuss no muss easy to get in and out.

RE: Best length?

34'. Best length ever.
Well yes but to expand on the wisdom imparted above I would say that 33 to 35 feet with 34 feet as the optimal size. (Best length ever!).
It's large enough to live in and live ones life in, while not being so large as to preclude the National Parks, State Parks and CoE campgrounds completely.
Yes are there a few campgrounds we're locked out of yes there are. Do we have room for us and three cats and our hobbies and my work while we move from place to place? Why yes we do.
It is simply the best length you're not forced into the RV big rig friendly sites the way some of the 45 footers might be, your not sitting there hating your spouse on day 8 of a 10 day stretch of rain. And as a full timer why yes we do end up in campgrounds with long stretches of bad weather thank you for asking.

RE: which one is best for full time living

In that price range I'd look at the Challenger by Keystone and the Bristol Bay by Crossroads as well as the two you have here.
That said if these are the two units you are in love with.
Go sit in them speed a while there with the wife figure out where everything you must have will go if you have pets figure out where the food dishes will sit and can you walk around them without kicking them.
The one you can figure out where everything goes and you can do all the things you know you are going to want to do in the unit wins.

RE: Interested in fulltiming questions..

why would anyone think an rv would be higher than an apt rental?
Because it is. If you stay in a park, it costs more than the low end apartments in the same area, has been true everywhere I've been.
And if you run a generator capable of running air conditioner more or less continually, your fuel will be more than basic rent over the space of a month...
Maybe yes maybe no...
Yes in some places the month to month costs for the RV park was very comparable to the lower end costs of an apartment.
Once I factor in the drug dealer on the corner for the low end apartment the camp ground in the woods gets to be a much better value then the apartment.
