RE: Delamination/Soft Roof Corners

Just washed my Savoy after Winter storage and noticed extensive delam issues. Had the slide panel fixed when it delamed after only a couple months of ownership. Now it seems there are problems in multilple locations. Like you said, no wonder they went belly up, terrible construction and even worse customer service when they were still in business.

RE: Placerville to Truckee, Ca

I don't think the road out to Meadow Lake is clear yet. Did CLM say it was? The road from 89 into Jackson Meadows and Meadow Lake beyond that, are not plowed in Winter. We had a big March and early April for snowfall, I would think it's still locked up out there.

RE: Placerville to Truckee, Ca

As mentioned there are a couple of very tight turns going from South Shore to Emerald Bay. Smooth sailing otherwise. You could do the alternative, 50 to 28 at Spooner Summit to 267 at Kings Beach into Truckee.
Where are you staying in Truckee if I may ask? Would hate to see you get stuck at one of the full time trailer parks here in town that started advertising RV spaces this year. If Coachland or a Forest service campsite you are okay.

RE: Yosemite to hwy 101

Stay on I-5 to Williams and take Hwy 20 West. 580 will take you right through the Bay Area and dump you off on 101 in San Rafael. Heavily traveled during the day, especially commmute hours. 20 will put you on 101 well North of the traffic jams.

Easy drive in your rig. I see motorhome, trailers and semis on 20 all the time. I drive from Truckee to the valley frequently on 20, easy route.

RE: Here's an unusual story - Bear Country

Sounds more like a "fish" story to me
Exactly what CA Dept of Fish & Game warden had to say about it. He in turn called the warden "gestapo" for not believing his story. Lots of strange folks in those parts of the land, probably too much wacky tobaccy.

RE: Mid April in Yosemite... chains ??

Usually you need chains on all four of the truck but you won't on the TT since those wheels are not powered. They kept the roads in the valley plowed when I did winter camping there, but I have admit sliding into a snow bank once. Someone with a 4WD pulled me out.
Not good info, at least one axle on the trailer needs to be chained. Also, only the drive wheels on the truck need to be chained not all four.

RE: Yosemite to yellowstone

When are you traveling? 120 over Tioga is closed for the Winter right now and they have not started snow removal yet. Not a big snow year so it won't be a late opening this year but still going to take a while to get it open.

RE: I-80 Grades

Personally, I think the grades aren't half as bad as the TRAFFIC! From Sacramento to Reno it is a freakin' nightmare. Just my opinion.
Depends on when you travel. I live off of I-80 in Truckee and travel over Donner Summit to Sac frequently. Stay away from Friday afternoons Eastbound and Sunday afternoons Westbound or when there is a storm, otherwise it isn't bad. Recent summers have experienced construction zones which also slow it down.
Yes, they have been working on re-building it as it was originally constructed in the 60s. Heavy Winters and heavy truck traffic have taken it's toll, just the price to pay for an all weather highway over a summit that gets a lot of wet snowfall every Winter.
As far as grades that the OP asked about, nothing bad in my opinion, depends on what kind of experience a driver has with mountain travel.

RE: CA Highway 29 to Clear Lake.

Doable yes but a very curvy road.I see large truck and trailers as well as RVs on it. Plenty of passing lanes for the people who think it is a race track to get around you.

RE: Avoiding the CA/OR Siskyou Mountains snow on I5

The weather hasn't been all that cold, so I "suspect" that any snow that falls won't be sticking around ..... for very long anyway.
However, there is a slick (no pun intended) way of putting a shield between you and "most" of the Pacific moisture (no moisture = no snow). Go north, up through Reno, Winnemucca and Burns. Eventually, they will have to cross over the mts (unless destination is on the east side of the Cascades) but they may be able to time it better. This time of year, shouldn't be a bad drive either way. Enjoy.
Safe travels,
Steve
If the OP follows thsi advise be careful on what route you take North. Stay East of the Sierra, we have Winter storms forecast all week. Even the Route to the East, typically 95, is going to be windy and advisories could be posted as the storms progress. Check them carefully.
Unfortuneatly this is a bad week to be heading North with Winter definitely packing a major punch to the West.

RE: California I5 to the North coast

Hwy 20 will put you on 101 far South of Crescent City. 20 is a good route and you should have no trouble with your rig. If you want to head farther North to Grants Pass and take 199 to the coast, that will put you right at Crescent City. 199 isn't a bad route, not as good as 20 but better than 299 out of Redding in my opinion.

RE: Vegas to Jackson Hole

You might consider i-15 to
93/318/93 north to Arco
20 east to Idaho Falls
26 east to Jackson
These are good roads and will by-pass the Salt Lake City mess

RE: best way to go to south lake tahoe in ca.

I prefer Hwy 88 over Hwy 50. No problem with your outfit in regards to low trees that I can remember and enough passing lanes to allow cars to pass.. As you are already aware, you do have to climb to get over the pass and you do have a down grade right after the top of the pass down Red lake grade but itis not too long. I hope you are not talking about a trip this snow season but are asking for the future.
I just got back from Reno. I didn't know we had a snow season this year.
Look again, we got dumped on yesterday and a huge storm forecast for tonight. Winter is back on up here in the Sierra.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

I live in Truckee which is on the East side of Donner Summit and there are no chains required right now on I-80. The roads are wet but clear and now is the time to make a run for it. Heavy snow forecast for tonight through Thursday which is going to be a mess. Go now.

RE: Planning NE to CA through Reno

There is a question on what the weather will be like on Monday. Tuesday seems to be a better "going over the hill" day. They'll know more when they actually get to Reno. I've sent them the construction data and times for the lane closures going on now between Reno and Truckee.
Now what about the route they should take to get north on I5 in California??
Should they jump off of I-80 and take hwy 193 at Newcastle (just west of Auburn) and head north via hwy 65 and hwy 70 into Yuba?? Then hwy 20 (backtracking southwest a bit) into Williams ??
They need to take hwy 20 west toward hwy 101...their destination is near Ukiah.
Two vehicles. Truck pulling a tt (combined length around 38 ft) in the lead and car following. The less stop and go the better.... Which way folks. (and don't tell them to take hwy 20 out of Emigrant Gap. It's too twisty for them at that point.
What's hwy 174 like between Shady Glen (on I-80) and Grass Valley (on hwy 20)??
Curious why you think 20 is too twisty from 80 to Grass Valley. I drive it several times a month and see semis and RVs on it every time having no difficulty. I have personally towed on it numerous times with zero issues.
As far as weather over the Sierra, do it from late Monday through Tuesday afternoon, after that it's going to be rough for a couple of days.
