RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

After two recent trips, I am down to half a tank. What I have cost $3.94 and what I can buy is $3.47. I wonder if I should fill up or wait until it gets lower. Usually if I wait, it goes way up. I guess the "cheap" gas and the expensive gas will mix together OK in the tank.

I was born in Fort Myers back in the last century. My Dad moved there in 1920. It has changed drastically since I left and I don't even recognize it anymore.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

I too yearn for the good old days of my youth when the government was an after thought and not the number one factor in so many folks lives. I am part of the half that pays federal income taxes. On the RV front, I am taking my first trip today since having my open heart surgery in Dec and going back in to the hospital in Feb. I did manage to fill up my RV while the price was at it's max like I normally do. I'll be burning out the expensive gas and then I'll be left with decision to refill or wait. I have a horrible record of guessing the trends.

The key word there is "savy". Lots of these folks are from overseas, can't speak English, and are trying to herd the kids. Leaves them with a bad taste of our area.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

The reason it should be illegal is that it gives our tourist based state a huge black eye when immoral folks overcharge people that have been brought here by large expenditures of our tax money. Unfortunately we have other similar practices around Orlando's airport and attractions. They negate a lot of the good will we pay dearly for. I agree we have way too many laws (and lawyers) and not nearly enough common sense.
I have been known to put $1 worth of gas in my truck with my debit card when I discover the price on the sign is cash and my card price is a dime higher. They have to pay the swipe fee and lose money on the transaction.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

That should be illegal, but I guess it is not. It is unethical as it can be. I guess it is what they mean by buyer beware. I also watch the numbers as they go up. Years ago, they found some stations that with electronic pumps were delivering the first 5 gallons accurately and then shorting everything above that. The state inspectors check the pumps by running 5 gallons into a graduated can and approving the pump based on that. Smart thieves. As prices get higher, there are more incentives to cheat.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

In Orlando, it looks like you hit the station that is the last one on the way to the airport. It is designed to get tourists who have to turn in their rental cars with a full tank. The locals have been trying to stop this practice for years and there have been lawsuits. He is still doing it. It is always a great idea to check the price at the pump as many stations advertise the cash price and then when you insert your credit card, the price goes up 6 to 10 cents. We had a easy in easy out station close to home that did the cash/credit card thing and stopped using them. They soon switched back to the honest method.

RE: Gas Detector Life

The actual replacing of the sensor is very easy. Mine had plug in terminals and was attached to the wall with two screws. Remove it, call the MFG, give them the number and get another one. Cheaper than from Camping World, ETC.

RE: Toad Brake-a-way

I have used my breakaway twice. Both of them were due to pilot stupidity (me). One was when I went around a sharp corner and my breakaway cable was a litte too short and it pulled the pin out and the brakes were applied (Blue Ox Toad Stop). I lengthened the cable and problem solved. The other time, one clevis pin on my towbar arm fell out due to not have it snapped down properly (I think). I was 80 miles from the campground and in the middle of the Everglades. I found the pin in the middle of the road. I now carry spares of each. No matter how good the design is, when you are doing something hundreds of times, eventually a mistake will show up. We now have my wife check everything after I hook up. As the Amish say, "Horse apples happen".
After your breakaway pin comes out, it will be scared up by bouncing on the pavement and needs to be sanded down smooth so it will fit in easily and come out easily if needed the next time.

RE: It's love bug time again on the Gulf Coast. UGGH

My friends told me they were being studied at a University when they got out into the general population.
It happened in Lake Alfred, FL close to Winter Haven at the Experiment Station. They have move all the way over to Mississippi now. Their only natural enemy is the windshield.

RE: Your not going to believe this!!

Reminds me of when I was young and tricky, I used to go put in a couple of gallons of fuel into my neighbors new VW and then go back a week later and siphon out a couple of gallons. It really had him confused. Almost as much fun as when another neighbor was adjusting the tension on his new automatic garage door opener and I used his wife's remote to really confuse him. After about an hour, my wife made me stop.

RE: Temp 55 gall drum septic system? Anyone done one before?

About 9 years ago, I put in a 2 55 gallon plastic drum system in a rental house that now is our personal home. I plumbed only the washer to it and we have had no problems. They are in parallel with a T in between. The hard part is digging the holes. I sealed the bung and put about 100 1/4" holes on the bottom half (laid down flat) and hooked them up with PVC pipe. We are in a very sandy area. We put Ridex in it on a regular basis as insurance. The grass is greener over the two drums.

RE: Your Fuel/Oil comments - please post here

We were doing our FL to Washington state last time the price got up to $4.00. We plan on traveling shorter distances and staying longer in a place.

The reason for the summer increase is that we are planning a trip from Florida up to Newfoundland. Happens every time we plan a long trip. Sorry.

Look, the moderator asked that you not continue to post this incorrect political material. What you have posted is incorrect and you will not goat me into refuting it point by point. Just give it a break and post this in a political environmental forum. I am sure you know where they are.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Shale oil is being drilled (not mined) and sold profitably at $60/bbl and It cost the same to refine as it come out of the ground as liquid crude oil. The notion that it increases the price of fuel by $2/gallon or $88/ barrel is ridiculous. Like to see your info on those. Environmentalist have a lot of money and are huge contributors to political campaigns. They just out bid the unions on the XL today.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

What kind of windmill would be required to run 2 13,000 watt AC's around the clock here in Florida in the summer? What fraction of one percent does wind power supply in the US even with huge subsidies?

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

The 250K number was well documented and can be found the internet. Electric cars make up less than 2% of passenger vehicles sold in the US and dropping. The Volt has been a huge failure at taxpayer expense. We are now up to 11 solar electric start up companies going bankrupt. Some of these "green" loans were made just prior to the bankruptcies. We are building 2 mega solar plans in FL that stand no chance of even approaching breaking even and will be drain on the taxpayers and ratepayers forever. The inside backers and contribution makes will be the only folks seeing any profit.

RE: Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

Wind is working everywhere.
Wind is failing everywhere and can not be viable even with huge taxpayer subsidies. The UK is giving up on it. It is joke. If you like it, please point out the units you have on your home. We have over a trillion bbls of shale oil in the US which is a 200 year supply. We are prevented from using it by the treehuggers through the contributions given to politicians.
