RE: The Lodge at Shenandoah

We live here and have never heard of this before. Maybe you are referring to Shenandoah National Park and some of the lodges located within the park.

RE: Camping in the Florida Panhandle?

We love Mexico Beach and St. Joseph's Peninsula State Park is gorgeous. Fun places along the way, especially Port St. Joe, Apalachicola, etc. If you get to Pensacola, make sure you visit the Naval Aviation Museum - fabulous.

RE: Campgrounds at the beach, East Coast/Florida?

We love Huntington Beach State Park, Murrell's Inlet, SC. You are far enough from Myrtle Beach crowds, but if the kids get bored with the ocean and the state park, you can drive 30 minutes to the excitement of Myrtle Beach. North Beach Camp Resort, just outside St. Augustine, is good as others mentioned. I was not too impressed with Edisto and the beach was not as pretty as Huntington Beach.

RE: Decent Motel in Williamsburg, VA area

We did this for the Christmas season several years ago. I did a search for hotels and we got a nice one, maybe a Comfort Inn for $35 a night. It had a very nice room and was not far from the historical area. It is one of our favorite places in this state. While there, take in Yorktown as well.

RE: National Parks this summer

Oops. I forgot to include our rig size. We have a 28' fifth wheel with a crew cab truck. Not big at all, at least in our standards.

RE: National Parks this summer

Lauren, thanks. I had planned on looking at your site and reading about it. But since we just returned from the FL Keys, and are catching our breath with mail, church, friends, etc., I have not found the time. You all are great with your suggestions and I thank each and every one of you. This is the reason we retired when we did. We sold our business, without even trying, with the intent of seeing the country while we still were able. We are excited and will not be disappointed with the lack of campsites available. We will make it work.

RE: National Parks this summer

We plan on seeing Utah. I would not miss Arches and the others for the world. Probably after the Grand Canyon.

RE: National Parks this summer

I will check out the recommendations that you all have made and I thank you for them all. We will not firm up an itineray nor make any reservations though, as we have no idea when we would land at a certain area. In the 12 years we have traveled, we find that we can make a reservation a day or two ahead and have had only one place say they did not have any sites. It is too stressful to "have to be somewhere" on a specific date. It may be that they will be filled and we will be stuck, but we are willing to stay 40 or so miles away and do day trips to the specific parks. If the weather is not cooperating, that is a good time to read a book or pay bills.

RE: Florida Trip

We love the eastern panhandle of Florida. We always stay at El Governor in Mexico Beach. It is right across from the Gulf and I can just walk across Rt. 98 and I am on the beach. We love the restaurant in old St. Andrews called Uncle Ernie's. We did not stay in Panama City though, but just visited. We just returned from the Keys and we always stay at Knights Key RV Park in Marathon. We have learned not to make any reservations until we are near where we want to stay. I called the campground 2 days before arrival and we had a site for 10 days. I think our rate was $68 or $70 and we reserved the whole month of Feb. next year. We have found that making reservations too far in advance tends to make us rush or miss a day or two and have to pay. In the 12 years we've been rving, we only had one place that did not have a site for us. Just enjoy yourselves. By the way Knights Key does not have sewer hook up, but they will pump you out for $10. That worked for us. Linda

RE: National Parks this summer

Thanks to all of you for your replies. We will be planning at least 3 months to do the parks. We have spoken with a friend who suggested we reverse our route, and take in Arizona and Utah areas first as it gets terribly hot there in July and August. That would allow us ample time to travel up the west coast taking in Yosemite, The Redwoods, etc. We probably would not get to Washington state until July anyway, or later. From there we want to see Olympic, Crater Lake (if possible) and then Glacier, Tetons, Yellowstone and then go east to the UP of Michigan. The cost of fuel, well that will just be something we live with. It is the sticker shock of returning from the Keys yesterday and seeing the price of diesel going up 5 cents at a time, the highest being $4.15. We looked on the west coast and it is already $5 a gallon. We will just bite the bullet, since we have retired to just do this trip. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Linda

National Parks this summer

We plan on leaving VA early June, heading to the U.P. of Michigan and then head west to see the National Parks, or as many as we can. Do you all know of any route that has been planned and what parks are a must see. We do want to see the coast of Washington and Oregon, would love to see Crater Lake there, but the cost of diesel is kind of frightening. Linda

RE: Camping near Charleston, SC

We were there last month on our way to the Keys. We always stay there when we visit my nephew in Charleston. Verizon wireless was great too, and we accessed the internet through our iPhone. The people were great, the place is nice and it is convenient to the city. We hated the speed bumps though, so take it slow and easy.

Campground not far from Titusville, FL

We are leaving the Keys tomorrow morning and think we can make it to the Titusville area by late afternoon. We looked on rvparkreviews.com to get some idea of where to stop, but they are mostly 50 dollars a night and we just want a place to sleep. We do want cable, since we've been without it for 2 weeks in the Keys....and we'd like a pull thru site too. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Linda

RE: Rustic Sands RV Resort

Our first stay in Mexico Beach was at Rustic Sands. The people were super nice but the site was not all that great. It was quite a few blocks from the beach and the next 4 or 5 times, we stayed at El Governor which is not all great at all, but the convenience of walking across Rt. 98 and being on the beach is worth it. The people were super nice too. We did not stay there last year, but we usually include a week there on our way to and from and never regret it.

RE: Few nights south of Vero Beach

We stayed almost a week at Treasure Coast. This by far is the only campground that we rated a 10. It was too perfect. I do prefer a more rustic campground but this one was fabulous.

RE: Williamsburg VA

We had a great time having lunch at Sheilds Tavern on Duke of Glouchester Street. I think it is called Sheilds Tavern, but it is close to the Governors Mansion. It was very entertaining with the actor who played the proprietor of the tavern. We went to Williamsburg last year in February and it was dead and hardly anything was open. Happy anniversary.

RE: West Florida RV parks

Although we did not do Florida last winter, we generally go every January. We have never found a campground that was completely full. We don't make any reservations until the day we hope to arrive. We hate the stress of trying to be at a campground at a certain day. The only one we did not get into was one of our favorites at New Smyrna Beach, but the campground just next to it had a few sites. We've even lucked out in the FL Keys. Now that I have jinxed it, I am sure this winter will be just the opposite.

We like Knights Key in Marathon. Just laid back and the views are great.

RE: Wonderful Wyoming

Just seeing those gorgeous pictures is getting us even more excited. We retired a week ago and have been planning the national park tour for years. This summer, we plan on north to upper peninsula of Michigan and then over the top of the country. The Tetons have been one of the must see on this trip. Thanks for the great photos. Linda
